I agree that this is a great intro, but always wondered if more than 20-percent of the video focusing on non-game material was due to so little occurring during the game. This is similar to the Super Bowl IX video in which there's an extensive pre-game focus. Both were defensive-dominated, low-scoring outcomes. Maybe NFL Films found it difficult to fill 22 minutes of game action for either game.

Washington lost this game before the opening kickoff even occurred. I've read several books on the 1972 Redskins, and many said George Allen's incessant nervousness and griping about the media demands for the Super Bowl eventually began to affect them. Putting the game plan in a week ahead of time instead of the week of the game and keeping a tight curfew on Redskins players after they arrived in Los Angeles made them extremely uptight. Many players and coaches said they had their best practice on Wednesday, but by Sunday they were emotionally drained. As a team, they were ill equipped to deal with the Super Bowl hype, while Miami was much more relaxed due to having been there the year before. Finally, it's important to remember that Washington relied on emotion maybe more than any other team in the league. Defeating their arch-rival Cowboys in the NFC Championship game was, for many players, their Super Bowl (Similar to Philadelphia heading into Super Bowl XV). There was just no way for Washington to reach that emotional level again against a Miami team it had no history against. Miami was the better team, but Washington didn't play the type of football in this game that it played all season to get there.

I'm just wondering why Allen didn't have his team onside kick after "Garo's Gaffe". They would then possibly have the ball back with about 2 minutes left instead of 1:09, plus it would have saved time outs. Not sure they would have scored with the extra time but if they did, you have a tie game..likely OT unless the Dolphins did something in the final seconds.

The irony of the outcome was that the Redskins had destroyed the Packers and Cowboys in the NFC, 42-6, while the Dolphins seemed to play only as hard as they needed to defeating the Browns and Steelers, 41-31. The reason why I believe Washington was actually favored over a 16-0 opponent.
@NosferatusCoffin Жыл бұрын
That and also the Redskins had played a tougher schedule, by far. The Dolphins played only two teams who would have a winning record by season's end. Also, there was still bias against AFL teams. Jimmy the Greek reportedly said that Miami was still AFL and didn't play the level of competition that Washington had. Lastly, Shula was 0-3 in championship games. 1964 NFL Championship loss to Cleveland (a huge upset) and Super Bowls III and V. So, in retrospect, it is not surprising the Dolphins were underdogs.

The Aqua and white Dolphins! During their Super Bowl wins following the 72-73 seasons, there wasn't a more dominant defensive player than Manny Fernandez (Nose Tackle #75), stacked over center; Don Shula put this team together and made them winners in just four years! I've always been a fan of this franchise since then; Coach Shula led them to two more Super Bowls, but lost both of them ( the last with Dan Marino vs. the San Francisco 49ers following the 1984 season); unfortunately, he(Shula) would never reach another Super Bowl with this franchise, but his legacy is already stamped as one of professional footballs all-time greatest head coaches ever. RIP Coach Don Shula. ..It's been 50 years since the Miami Dolphins won their last Super Bowl; but this year, head coach Mike McDaniel, and the offense, led by quarterback Tua Tagavaloia and wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, gives us Dolphins fans hope to get back there, but they need the home field advantage because the offense could be affected by crowd noise on the road. The score was deceptive. Miami completely dominated this for the entire 4 quarters. A long bomb TD to Warfield was called back due to a holding penalty. The Skins only hung in because of their excellent defense. Their offense was shut down and out. Their only score came via the stupidest play in Super Bowl history. This game should've been won by at least 14 to 20 points.
@Wixom22003 жыл бұрын
@@skymasterson5833 You just said it. Their defense was what made it close. Don't forget the pass from Kilmer that hit the goalpost. That would have been TD. Also, the stupidest play is NOT giving the ball to PROBABLY the best RB in football( Marshawn Lynch) when Seattle is on the 1 or 2 yd line ,3 rd down w / a timeout left as well w/ 15s seconds to go against NEngland. Now what Pete Carrol did was STUPID. He gave NE a Superbowl, they should never have won.

@@skymasterson5833 The Dolphins were a good team ,thats all. I watched them that yr. The whole AFC ( as usual) was week. One team over .500. ( Dolphins). The rest were horrible! Check the results. Also, the Redskins shut them down. This was the lowest Miami scored against an opponent the whole yr by far. The problem was a poor offensive game plan by Wash. Miami was decent against the run hecause of their LB's. Wash should have been passing heavy the whole game to take Miami Linebackers from defensive line pressure. They could have won this game provided they passed more. You have to look at the whole season and the playoffs.
@skymasterson58333 жыл бұрын
@@Wixom2200 The AFC was what??? 3 teams won 10 games in a 14 game sched, and 2 others won 8, the NFC had three 10 win teams also, and three 8 win teams. That is plenty balanced. The Dolphins were not a "good" team, they were a great team. Number 1 in points, points allowed, Number 1 in yards gained AND allowed. A grand slam of #1 rankings that will NEVER be duplicated. Never. Now, the Dolphins schedule, thats another story. They played one of the 10 worst schedules in history that year. You can say the Dolphins were a product of their weak schedule, that they took advantage. Well, they did. You can't answer for the quality of your opponents, you can only play who they put in front of you. The impressive thing is, Miami went unbeaten with their starting QB hurt for the last 9 games of the regular season; 64% of the schedule. I dont care who you play, that is an enormously difficult task to pull off. The AFC started a run of 5 straight Super Sunday victories with this season, and eventually 8 out of 9. The Redskins had terrible luck with passes hitting the goalposts. In the 1945 NFL championship game, Sammy Baugh had a pass blown into the goalposts, and it was a safety for the Cleveland Rams. The Rams won 15-14.

What I find funny, is how Dan Marino's #13, and Mark Duper's #85, are both defensive players in this game...Lol. #13 Jake Scott, and #85 Nick Buoniconti.

How ironic that the final score would have been 17-0 if Garo made that field goal.

I am not a Miami fan , but I do like the Dolphins . Especially when they got beat down the year before by Dallas only to respond like this . Other teams tank it but look at what they did . They became stronger from defeat .Came back with a vengeance .

What was Garo thinking ?? He should have left the passing to the quarterback. He cost the Dolphins the shutout and came close to costing them the game and their perfect season.

Not sure why George Allen did not like Sonny Jurgensen. With his love for old veterans, you would expect him to like Sonny even more than Kilmer. On the other hand, Kilmer certainly deserved the start after his performances against Green Bay and Dallas.

Sonny went on record on several occasions speaking of his dislike for George Allen, not sure what the deal was between them two

I dont think Allen really cared for Sonny's ( or anyone's for that matter ).. zest for a bit of the night life..

Sonny told a story of Allen calling a draw play on 3rd & long, in order to set up a FG. When the defense called out to look for the draw, Sonny audibled to the pass & it went for a TD. The only thing that mattered to Allen was that his call was disobeyed, so maybe those kinds of reasons etc?

I wonder if it would have made a difference if George Allen had put Sonny Jurgensen in during the 2nd half to boost the offense? Miami's D looked awful tough that day, so maybe not so much.
@76vike193 жыл бұрын
Jurgensen was in the press box and didn’t dress.

Jurgensen tore his Achilles tendon earlier in the season. It most certainly would've been a more competitive game if he was able to play.

Was Billy Kilmer the beer-bellied Tom Dempsey of NFL quarterbacks? Lots of heart, grit, determination, great teammate and leader but slightly above average in talent and physical skills. Does Kilmer belong in the Hall of Fame? Or does he belong with the following good but not great signal callers? Roman Gabriel, Tommy Kramer, Jim Hart, Boomer Esiason, Jim Plunkett, Joe Ferguson, Steve Grogan, Ron Jaworski, Greg Landry, Daryl Lamonica, Craig Morton, Danny White, Brian Sipe, Steve Bartkowski, John Hadl, Joe Theisman. Earl Morall. Or do any of these guys belong in the Hall?
