I was at this game, Whitney Houston and Dionne Warwick sat right in front of me. When I say right in front of me, I mean when they leaned back a little their backs would hit my knees. The Rose Bowl had wood bench seats and the rows were very close together. When I leaned back my back with hit Ted Williams knees. He was sitting right next to Stan Musial. One of my Wolfie Moments.

The Broncos had their chances to upset the Giants. Having that 10-7 lead and having the ball at the 1 and doing nothing with it. Then Rich Karlis missing that very short field goal and then missing another field goal allowed the Giants to stay in the game. Once the fake punt on 4th and inches worked and the Giants scored, the game was over. The Broncos had no running game and they were entirely zeroed in on Elway. Phil Simms couldn't miss in the second half and the Giants defense clamped down on Elway. It wasn't until 11 years later that Elway finally had a running game in Terrell Davis and a defense that stepped up in the Super Bowl that the Broncos FINALLY won their first Super Bowl.

Very well said! That's how I see it too. Who the hell was Sammy Winder? If the Broncos had a better running back they could've won this. But your qb can't be the leading rusher if you want to win Superbowls.

@@ericradford2142 But I still think Cleveland’s running game would’ve been tougher for the Giants to stop early, but I think at halftime they would make the proper adjustments and the Giants still would’ve won going away in the 2nd half. And I also think they would’ve shut down Kosar, the same way they did with John Elway, in the 2nd half especially. Remember, Cleveland was without Earnest Byner throughout those playoffs, would he have given it a go in that Super Bowl? Most likely yes. Their best back was Kevin Mack that season. Curtis Dickey did not play in the AFCCG v Denver and would have been questionable going into that Super Bowl v Giants. Phil Simms went 22-25 v Denver’s secondary. Cleveland’s secondary would have been more formidable (two all-pros in Dixon and Minnifield) for Simms and the Giants O. That said, Simms would be I’d say about 16-24 v Cleveland.

@@dannyboy34677 In the words of the late, great John Madden: "You're not gonna make a living running against these Giants". During the Harry Carson era (including the Super Bowl vs. Denver), opponents averaged just 80 yards/game rushing vs. The Giants. And this was against the John Riggins, Tony Dorsetts, and the Walter Paytons of the world. Cleveland had a good run game, but compared against the three Hall Of Fame running backs just mentioned, Cleveland running backs pale in comparison.

Cleveland didn't even earn the right to be a part of the Super Bowl discussion. The 1986 12-4 Browns had home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs that year. Here's what they did with their home field advantage: Divisional Round: Beat the 10-6 Jets 23-20. AFC Championship: Squandered a 20-13 lead in the 4th Quarter and lost to the visiting 11-5 Broncos 23-20 in OT. A "championship" defense doesn't surrender a 98 yard TD drive late in the 4th quarter. The Browns didn't protect their own house - giving up 43 points at home in two games (21.5 points/game). Here's what the 14-2 Giants did with their homefield advantage: Divisional Round: Thrashed Joe Montana and his 10-5-1 49ers 49-3. NFC Championship: Shut out Joe Gibbs' 12-4 Washington Redskins 17-0. The Giants championship defense held their opponents to just THREE points (1.5 points/game) in the NFC playoffs, and 23 points in THREE games (7.6 points/game) when you include the 39-20 victory over Denver. The Giants not only protected their house in the NFC playoffs, they made their opponents pay dearly for entering their house. Giants were the hungrier team in 1986, after their 1985 10-6 season came to an end after a 17-3 NFC Wildcard win over the 49ers the week prior then getting shutout 21-0 by the 15-1 Bears during the 1985 NFC Divisional Round which provided them with extra motivation. The 1986 Giants were a team on a mission, and they weren't going to be denied. Facts.

@@dantesinfernopurgatory7826 And I was still saying that 2nd half if it were Cleveland (instead of Denver), the Giants would’ve found a way to shut down the Cleveland running game and then pull away like they ultimately did against Denver in the 2nd half In Pasadena

The music at the end gets me so friggin hyper every time! Remember this game like it was yesterday. Superb team! Loved seeing Elway get destroyed in those Super Bowls.....eventually he'd win a couple though but early on he was a punk and needed to get some good baptism by fire "If I can't play for the Broncos, I won't play for the Colts wah wah wah..." Same goes for that punk Eli Manning, he too ended up with 2 Super Bowl rings though....(throwing my hands up in the air).

I don’t blame him for not wanting to play for the Colts. A great player can transform a team but the Colts had very serious problems that went beyond the playing field and the coaching staff. They were a trainwreck of dysfunction as an organization, and might well have wrecked Elway’s career had he played for them.

If you had watched the Giants all season, as I did, you would know that the first half score was meaningless. The Giants typically, wore out teams and took over in the second half. Add to that that they were bigger and stronger on both lines than the Broncos and you have a half-time score that indicated the Giants in a blow-out.

If I'm a Giants fan in 1986, I'm relieved that the Browns lose the AFC championship game due to Elway's late-game heroics, because the Browns match up better against the Giants than the Broncos do.

SingleTax Really? Let me tell what the Giants were saying in the NY papers leading up to the Super Bowl. "No disrespect to Bernie Kissers but compared to Elway, he would have been a stationary target in the pocket and no way would have he survived the first half. I tend to agree and one more thing. As good as Cleveland's running game was, NOBODY ran on the Giants, nobody.
