That intro was totally a Kerbal Space Program launch. Messed up staging, summoned the rage of the kraken by having something spinning too fast, and just a short, disappointed “oh” at the self destruction. Now all you have to do is revert to vehicle assembly and you’ll be good to go.

Engineer type here, for your next upgrade use liquid electrical tape on the ESC wire connector pads, then use common electrical tape to waterproof your ESC, this will eliminate the chance of shorting your ESC if it gets wet from grass or condensation. Look into a counter rotating motor, it has TWO props that spin opposite of each other. When you scale this up (which who wouldn't!) you'll find that the torque generated by a single prop will start to rotate the rocket which is wasted energy after a certain amount of rotation (some rotation aids in stability, past that it's wasted). This was VERY entertaining! Thanks for making this and having the brains to give it a go!

I know this project is 20 months old already (this is the first time I've seen it) but I just wanted to mention that the torque reaction from the spinning prop and motor seem to give the craft some yaw stability issues. I wonder if canting the fins slightly in the opposite direction wouldn't help counteract that effect, at least once it gets up to speed.

Use contra-rotating props, so energy isn't lost to the rotation of the "rocket" body and for stability. Notice the twisting and resulting failure of the rocket during and shortly after takeoff in the first trial. Contra-rotating props would eliminate that problem and allow for maximum thrust without twisting/failure. (Edit: Autocorrect typo fixed)

Ironically, saw a book that had a similar rocket design from the 60s/70s (though using good old rubber bands as the propulsion) They solved the problem of requiring counter-rotation by having stationary blades of equal size to the moving blades underneath. It may also be useful to have a larger or multi-blade propeller so as to maximise the downward thrust efficiency

For example Aluminum Oxide batteries tend to have really bad charge memory effects. NiCd batteries are just more well known because of their extensive use and more pronounced memory effect. Lithium ion or NiMH have much longer life, but they eventually do experience voltage drops or a lowering of charge capacity. On the flipside capacitors don't have any chemical reactions, and as a result they do not experience these loses or buildup of inert nonreactive salts... no matter how much they are charged/discharged.

When charging high power capacitors, especially with a lithium battery pack, I would highly recommend using an appropriately sized current limiting resistor. The initial peak current will be incredibly high as you're essentially shorting the battery. That's not good for the battery, and not good for whatever switch or plug you are using.

Judging from how noticably harder you need to pedal for just a single light i think regenerative breaking isn't really going to work. A turbo button on the other hand would be a good idea, this way you could get away with a smaller battery if you just want to use it occasionally. With recharging time fore the caps it would probably be a lot like the nitro button from need for speed.

What I like about this project is that unlike solid rocket boosters in use in model rocketry, this has the potential to be much less expensive to reuse over time. On top of that, it is a mostly green project, especially if the source of electricity is solar or wind. I guess a couple of questions come to mind: -How high is the limit for a capacitor rocket? I imagine there might be a super capacitor weight vs altitude trade off. -What materials maximize the reuse potential of the rocket, especially fins and parachute? -Is this something that could turn into a hobbyist kit project? -Altimeters and video components get built into solid rockets. What’s the potential (pun) for incorporating this into your design. -I hope at some time you take this farther.

Well before there were supercapacitors there were explosive electrolytics. My career at Hughes Aircraft began in 1964. In the first laboratory in which I was assigned to do some thermal testing, a time consuming process as the oven comes up to temperature, I had the opportunity to gaze up at the ceiling tiles. There I saw the remaining aluminium casings of what had been a couple of large electrolytic power supply filter capacitors. They were firmly embedded into the acoustic fiber tiles. I asked the older technicians how that had happened. He said the polarity had been reversed on the output after the high voltage, vacuum tube(valve) power supply had been shut down. To this day I wonder how high those cans might have gone had it occurred in an open field like you used.

He just needs good ol’ tri-blade race props. Smack into a tree at 80mph, slightly bend back one of your prop blades, and go hammering it through the trees again on your race mini quads! The old props seemed to be more brittle than icicles and would break on almost anything even 5 mph epic slow airplane crashes or slight bumps. Modern props use better materials with plastics that are more rigid (holding aerodynamic shape and efficiency at high power), as well as taking a beating and allowing more than hairline flexing. Plus they seem to bend back about 20 times, whereas the old ones had a fatigue limit of seemingly 1 crash, and maybe it would be sorta flyable at low throttle and vibrating, or maybe the props would explode... It’s a good thing we have modern props, because I crash a lot! So much better than the old ones.... they do need to become more available in the 9-12 inch size though, those all seem to be old school materials (besides carbon, but those just aren’t as cheap to crash like I do)

A few years ago I upgraded it with a LiPo battery and a 200w brushless motor and it turned into a completely different beast: When new, the glider could climb to altitude once, which took some 3 minutes, and then maybe another half-climb. But now, it will happily climb to almost out-of-sight altitude in some 20-30 seconds. And it can do it countless times on a single charge - and now that it is some 500g or about 1 lb lighter (which is a big deal for a 2m sailplane), half-hour flights are now routine. One single LiPo charge will last a whole day at the flying field, between flying the glider and chatting with friends. Great stuff.

The 6.4V is just your configuration of protecting Li-Ion batteries from undercharge. Unlike batteries, capacitors have a pretty linear voltage to energy ratio graph, so you're skipping a lot of the potential energy, if you charged with 8.4V.
@grahamdavies8924
@grahamdavies8924 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe, wrong and wrong (sigh). Yes, it's possible that the control electronics shuts down at 6.4 volts to avoid discharging the battery too much. No, capacitors don't have a linear relationship between stored energy and voltage; the energy is proportional to the square of the voltage. No, the capacitors were not charged only to 8.4 volts; at 12:10, you can clearly see that the battery has four cells, so the voltage will be near the maximum rating of the capacitors, which is 18 volts (6 times 3 volts).

Fun project. Good video. You can use a boost converter (or buck/boost) to get more energy out of the capacitors when the charge gets low. The low voltage detection circuit is meant to protect the battery from over-discharge, but isn't needed for capacitors which can be completely discharged. I'm not sure if this actually counts as a rocket, although it certainly looks like one.

Tom, at 8:40 you are testing the charge and you have your face directly inline with the propeller. This is quite dangerous should the propeller decide to come apart. Doesn't happen often fortunately but I've been hit when one did. I've flown model airplanes for about 45 years and seen all kinds of crazy things that you wouldn't expect. Please at least wear safety glasses when doing stuff like this. I'm curious about your "charged enough" conclusions. How quickly will your battery discharge? 10C? 20C? what's the actual amp/hr rating and how did you charge it? Why don't you have a direct connection point to read out the voltage that the capacitors are reaching?

My thoughts also! Very cool project, but I would hate to see you get injured.

Also, capacitors are no joke... charging them by holding bare leads onto the battery terminals was incredibly dangerous.

I like how happy that rocket sounds. Even when it exploded, like right before it happened, that's the happiest that things ever been man.

I like the red, white and blue colour scheme. It's Dutch on the launch pad, French when it starts turning, and Russian if the landing is violent enough

When I saw this: this is not a rocket, it has no reactive engine, just a propeller. Essentially, it's a helicopter. How it he gonna make it not spin around its axis in the opposite direction? 10:20 never mind

@@samfurness2754 For an eight year old, yes, but the title implies something much cooler: it's click bait.

@@samfurness2754 yes, it's a cool project. But it's not a rocket. Can it be used outside of the atmosphere? No. And don't underestimate semantics. It's like if the title said that the video will be about trebuchets, dams, chess; and then the video would show cannons, lakes and go. It would still be cool, but it's a different thing.

Calling anything that shape a "rocket" is just a popular colloquialism.

You are my favorite KZbinr. You're always doing very interesting projects just to see how things can be done in different ways than usual methods.
