Andrew Feather is a superstar climber. Ranked as one of the world’s very best on Strava, he has shown time and time again on the channel just how good he is. But how does he compare to Tour de France riders? To find out, we teamed up with Wahoo to see if he could set a new KOM on the legendary climb of Alpe d’Huez!

Somebody at GCN needs to confirm this bpm question. My resting around low 60's and max I ride to is 155 to be safe (62years). That does not seem correct at 93bpm putting out that power. So this throws all other data into question unless somebody confirms the bpm error tbh.

One thing that would be neat to highlight and talk about is his form when climbing. I live in the blue ridge mountains (where George Hincapie lives) and everyone that I ride with that I consider extraordinary climbers all climb out of the saddle. Several of them normally ride single speed in the mountains as well. Learning and understanding the technique is critical to climbing success I think.

Fun to watch and a phenomenal effort - but i was kinda dispaointed that it was not the IRL climb attempt. The result mimics my experince with virtual versus IRL. You will be faster in the virtual world due to road condition, traffic, weather and other outside influences. AF IRL - 44:22 (in 2018) AF Virtual - well watch the video. Looking at the strava times i am guessing this attempt was over the shorter Huez finish as Sepp Kuss holds the "Chrono Course" KOM at 39:21 after this years TDF Stage 12 when they went over the Lauteret / Galibier / Croix de la Fer before hitting the alp. Come on GCN get this man on a plane and lets see him taking on the real thing rather than using his talent to promote indoor training apps and kit.

Incredible effort, 2 things that spring to mind that have probably been mentioned by others are altitude and air density- the air will be thinner at 1850m ASL (16.6% oxygen) than in the GCN studio (Probably 20.7% not much above sea level), therefore MUCH less oxygen. He's stationary also in the studio (no winds) yet conversely at altitude in thinner air he should be quicker through the air?? Yep...need to get him over there and pick a good day !!!

Wahoo X is very complete with virtual routes (E-sport) and structured training plans. I was subscribed to SYSTM but was missing the virtual riding experience. The down side to Wahoo X and Zwift is in my opinion the virtual world your riding in, like a cartoon. That is why I choose Rouvy since your riding real routes with real footage, but with a VR layer over it so you can do virtual group rides, races etc. And the pricing of Rouvy is more friendly.

2 things: Sepp Kuss holds the KOM on the Alpe D'Huez segement @35:58, not Romain Bardet. They both set their times in the Tour this year, and Sepp was 18 seconds faster, which is quite a difference. Secondly, Andrew has the 17th overall best time on the actual Alpe D'Huez @39:43. Why this isn't mentioned is beyond me. Side note: Andrew averaged 375 watts on the real climb, Sepp averaged 373 on his KOM effort.

I climb out of the saddle and on the DROPS aka Pantani-style - that is basically akin to SPRINTING up mountains and is v. demanding to hold for long - but once your skeletal musculature develops - I think it is the MOST efficient climbing style compared to in the saddle ( aka Indurain-style ) and out of the saddle on the hoods ( aka Contador-style ) I think the latter is likely the worst style since it uses / emphasizes leg muscles that are not normally used ( as much) during in the saddle rides - the Pantani-style uses the SAME leg muscle group so you should come out ahead as a stronger in the saddle rider if you go there - also - as your head is low down in a sprint-style it is better aero than in the saddle - I would recommend EVERY young cyclist to ride Pantani-style if they want to be a GREAT climber - it takes years to perfect and a super strong core but once you have it - you will be gold level climber

Amazing effort. 93 HR, it must have been broke, at max effort. But amazing athlete and would love to see him against the pros up the Alpe.

Really fenomenal performance. Huge congratulation 👏 I expect, that heart rate monitor of which data was displayed in Zwift screen monitored Ollie's heart rate 🤣 93 after 35 minutes of riding in avarage 390 W is absolutely mind blowing for me.

seriously impressive ride Feather duster - NOW - NEXT challenge - go DOWN to Alpe d'Huez and DO THE CLIMB again in REALITY ... indoor climbing does NOT account for elevation oxygen deficit OR road surface tire friction losses OR wind loading OR outdoor environmental conditions like sun beating down on you or insects attacking you etc either - those factors will most definitely impact his results so I do not think you can OFFICIALLY claim to be KoM over Bardet - makes up for the Miro di Surano race LOSS ( sort of ) but you will need to avenge that one I am afraid to win back some pride of place

Bardet is not the fastest human to ever cycle up Alpe d‘Huez. The fastest official time is held by Marco Pantani, who managed a 37:35 in 1997. Both Pantani and Bardet, have used drafting to some extend, so A solo rider will have it much harder.

Honestly he might be if feather doesn't want to share his hr data lol either that or the monitor he was using was throwing a bad reading. No way he'd be that blown with a low heart rate like that! Lol

If he had just beaten the record, that would have been satisfying. But he smashed it so much that you absolutely have to send him to tackle the real life KOM. It would be a great comparison to see how environmental factors effect a climb.

I thought the actual KOM of Alpe d'Huez was taken during the tour in the 90s by Pantani (who was very obviously on EPO). It would be interesting to see how that one compares to today's times.

Very little would be my guess because in the grand scheme of things Alpe d’Huez isn’t that high, definitely under 2000 metres which is where things are generally considered to start getting more difficult
