You are right about the temperature causing the cracking. I have not done any pours so I have been researching the time effects on pours. As far as cracking this is what I have found: control the temperature and humidity level in the studio as much as possible. Dry climates increase the chance of crazes developing - fissures resulting from liquid acrylic products skinning over during initial drying while the underlying liquid paint is still very fresh. The skin shrinks and tears apart resulting in unwanted physical textures known as a “craze”. Your pour is absolutely stunning. Love it.

I did it! MelyD thank you 😊 I got it... I’m over the moon! In my humble opinion not only is this an awesome technique, it really teaches the control of moving the paint over a canvas. I was finally able to move the puddle of pain in 3 or 4 circles before I went for the corners and sides! Whooop! Whooooop! Now I’m ready to GO BIG!

I Love this one!!! Your videos have taught me so much about negative space & how to “eyeball” a painting & know when to leave an area alone- i started out pouring thinking the whole canvas had to be covered with “pattern” - I don’t know why it never occurred to me that it didn’t! it was so liberating to just let the paint flow & not worry that the colors wouldn’t be dispersed everywhere, Learning to pour the “background” color first for that And easier manipulation of moving the paint around. I know I’ve said it before, but thank you for sharing your talents, wisdoms (“it’s madness” Lol!) & authenticity !

This is perfect timing, as I’m going to try my 6th cloudy pour this morning, but on a slightly bigger canvas, a 12x24...so I was particularly happy to see this one! Love the negative space in black, love the softness and light against the darkness, and the cracks with the black showing through, couldn’t be better! I’m going to keep attempting these cloudy rings until I consistently get beautiful results like these! And BTW, I think that thanks to Mely D, the Deco Art Satin Enamel is impossible to find except from the scalpers on Amazon!! LOL!!

You are the artist that I first watched and who inspired me to try this approach. Thank you for another beautiful video. I struggle so much mixing my paints to get them to move like yours. I was amazed at the tiny amount of pouring medium you used with all that black. I usually need to have five or six times the pouring medium with my paint to get them to move at all. The paint comes out of the tube like a thick fat caterpillar and it needs lots and lots of mixing. Maybe I'm using the wrong kind of paint! However, you keep inspiring me to try.
@MelyDartist6 жыл бұрын
That's because I add water :) when working with real pouring medium like liquitex you don't have to add a lot, the rest is water and YES it takes a lot of mixing. I spend a lot of time preparing my paints and making sure they are good to go. Its part of the process :)
@rosemarypell18366 жыл бұрын
@@MelyDartist Oh thank you! for some reason I thought that too much water would harm the integrity of the paint, so I kept adding more and more pouring medium then I switched to Floetrol. I was using Demco pouring medium and it was getting expensive! I'll try the "less PM, more water" approach. Thank you for your generosity of spirit.
@MelyDartist6 жыл бұрын
@@rosemarypell1836 its important that you understand that yes adding too much water will ruin the integrity of the paint unless you use real pouring medium. Floetrol is not pouring medium, it's a wall paint extender that you buy at the hardware store. I'm guessing that's why people who use it use a ton of it. I rather use a lot of paint than a lot of additives. The more you change your recipe, the more different your result. It's all just an adaptation that comes with practice ;) lotsa love to ya!
@rosemarypell18366 жыл бұрын
@@MelyDartist I appreciate your time to add clarity to a confusing subject. I think I will switch back to the pouring medium with more water to get the consistency. I like the dried look of the paintings I did with pouring medium. Keep on being the inspiring you!!

I wanted to say thank you for sharing the results when they are a part of experimenting. It opens my mind up to so many different options. This style of painting is freeing and, often times, frustrating by its unpredictable nature. When variables are found to have a certain result, it's nice to try and forecast what you might get in a painting. With that being said, I find that gold is a difficult color to use. I tried the bright gold enamel from DecoArt and I am in love with my results so far. I would never had thought of using it if you hadn't tried the white and black with such varying results. I do use floetrol , water, and Liquitex pouring medium (when I can afford it) in my mix so my results could be in that combo.

@MelyDartist6 жыл бұрын
I agree that gold isn't easy. From my experience it tends to take over a lot. I haven't tried the satin enamel one yet but you just got me very curious about it so thank you. I'm glad you like my experiments and I have to say I find it very important to show the final result because fluid paintings dont always dry the same as when they are wet. I believe in not giving false hope when showing how I make a painting. Dried result at the end is a must. If my painting does not dry well and I don't like it, I delete my video and dont post it. It's unfair to people who want to try what the person is showing if the end result looks like crap. :)

LOVE IT!..... the colours, everything even with the cracks, which I don’t think is a negative thing...on a personal note I love details, so loving the painting from a distance, I definitely would have to look closer and admire the beauty and take it all in, especially the cracks, cells and everything about it, kind of like in the film Mona Lisa with Julia Roberts where she takes her students to admire the Sidney pollack painting close up

Holy crap! This same thing happened to me too in my cold (basement)studio with my heater close by and left on? This seems to be seasonal in the dead of below zero Winter weather. I thought that was it but now that it happened to you and few others I talk to, it's that new Artist Loft crap base paint that is giving me trouble too. I'm going to try Amsterdam only to see if that helps. I don't usually use it at all but have a few tubes of black and white I can test with. T I only left for an hour to go ski and came back and found everything cracked in the entire painting which was still wet but dried around the edges and crazed and cracked. Worse yet black AL paint all over new white ski pants. Bad day painting and skiing. Should have just watched T.V. and ate nachos type of day. These still came out cool though. Nice work and commend the constant effort on the numerous experiments! I'm not sure if I love the Science or Art more with this type of painting but, I find it touches on ALL my interests which is only Science and Art. I see you got straight A's in both as well. I failed every other subject. Straight A's in Science and Art Major 1 and 2 and Photography 1 & Adv. Development. Everything else, I'm lucky I got out H.S.

This paint cracked initially for me, but honestly, I discovered two things: One: its too thick. I find if I pour enough of it off, it never cracks. I've had about 10-12 successful pours without cracking if I just make sure to tilt most of it off. Two: I didn't add enough pouring medium to it. Hope this helps! :)

But Hallelujah I found a teenager she showed me how I can get KZbin on my television so now I'm going back and binge-watching all of your older episodes. Although I could probably ask you a million questions about this episode, I saw an episode where you sprayed what I thought you said was dish detergent on a piece to see if you would get a reaction. And yes you did! Could you please tell me about the dish detergent thing? Is it just regular old dish detergent like dawn and is it mixed with water? If it is at what ratio? Sorry about all the questions but I've never heard of dish detergent before and you got an amazing result on your piece. As for the cloud effect I am having so much fun playing with it. If I could show you pictures I would show you the large piece I did that looks like outer space on one side with clouds on the other. Love love love this technique and Nobody Does it Better Than You
