7.3 powerstroke cold start no start fix for under $100. My truck would not hardly start under 50-60 degrees. I was able to fix the injectors before replacing them. Shimming the injector electronics back to factory clearances makes a world of difference.

Thank Eric for posting this video on your experience using my kit to shim your injectors . This is Robert from Truckrental on eBay. I own over twenty five 7.3 Power Stroke F450 most with over 200k miles, in my fleet. I have shimmed almost all without having to buy new injectors. The shim kits Instructions over time have been revised to help people to do the job better. 1. Remove valve covers and plug back in the electrical to the engine. Start engine and do a test by unplugging one injector at a time to check condition of your injectors. If you have a miss or weak cylinder, shim those injectors first. 8. Plug in electrical to Solenoids and engine. Start engine before installing covers and do a test by unplugging one injector at a time, if any have a miss, check wiring harness for loose connections or bad wiring. Thanks again, Bob

Great Video! Glad you got the problem solved. I have same issue, but is different problem. Originally checked my GP relay, it was good. Replaced some glow plugs and injector seals. clearance was okay, changed a gasket. All plugs tested good, and seals looked good. Went back to the replay again, and it wasn't working. Turned out the control wire was loose. Some times if would connect and some times not even after tightening. Internally the relay was wore out and arced contacts due to loose wire causing intermittent contact. Probably put 20 years wear on the relay in one year. Low HPOP pressure can also cause hard/no cold starting, or wore injectors nozzles.

Hey, I had the same EXACT issue on my 2001 7.3 with 199K miles......Lots of white smoke and wouldnt wanna start at high elevation...injectors were good, batteries were good, glow plug relay was testing good...I pulled the valve covers and pulled out one of the glow plugs and it was literally split down the middle, like it cracked nearly in 2 equal halves..needless to say the rest of the glow plugs looked like crap and had actually expanded in size! I replaced all glow plugs and it never had the problem again....4 yrs later btw....hope that helps you out brother.

What an emotional roller coaster, been there done that lol! Just an FYI 7.3 guys, the glow plugs stay on for 2 minutes on the on position. No need to cycle the key once the light comes off. Would also not recommend trying to crank too early before the glow plugs have cycled, the cold diesel hitting the hot plug could really do some harm to them.

Never in the 15 years I’ve owned it would it start below 30 degrees without being plugged in. I’m sure the main issue was the Solenoid clearances but at 330k, original injectors a complete injector change out was a good idea.

I was thinking relay not working because I noticed your battery gage showing no drain for that 1-2 minutes. I have a 95 and a 2000 and they both show a voltage drop from the moment you turn the key until 1-2 minutes after it’s running. I had cold start problems but a new starter, (which your sounds pretty good) and balanced ohms on the GPS seems to have fixed it., this was years ago tho.

Glad you got the truck running, but the smoke indicates that fuel was present, I am thinking there is an issue with the glow plug system. Bad connection, low voltage, etc. The driver side battery ground at the frame is a possible spot. You need some kind of monitor to so you dont rely on the auto store scanner, I use Torque Pro and ForScan with an OBDLink MX bluetooth. Relatively inexpensive solution for monitoring and clearing codes, an old android phone or tablet and a laptop for ForScan, ...help keep the truck running another 200k miles.

Sam Adams Cmon Sammy you’re better than that. We rarely had any problem starting our HMVVS over in Iraq when it was near freezing so when you tell us that any diesel needs glow plugs in cold weather you are dead wrong. I’ve got a 97 7.3 and if you know about these engines then you know when ALL other systems are working properly you do not needs to rely on glow plugs to start it. Just because your truck went through “this” doesn’t mean you’re on the right path to diagnosing others trucks. No need to talk anymore about this, as you learn more about what makes these engines tick you’ll start figuring this stuff out. 🤙

I understand there could be alot of things to check. Glow plug relay, Cam position sensor (rpm while cranking), HPOP pressure 475 to 500psi idle, IPR valve could be bad, fuel pressure, glow plugs (use a volt meter on ohms one lead on ground 1 lead on the glow plug should read around 2ohms if it reads open its shot), also 250,000 miles on the factory injectors is crazy just get new ones the truck will start better and sound better. Syn oil is a waste of money. Most people compare a syn 5w-40 to a dino 15w-40 on cold starts and say that the syn is so much better. Well dah. They are not the same. One is a 5w and the other is a 15w below 32*. @@ericsscout

You need to add Archoil to your oil system. The injectors are gummed up internally and the archoil additive will clean them out and the truck will start normally right away. You desperately need to watch the videos at www.powerstrokehelp.com. They are located in the Atlanta suburbs. Nobody has more information on the Ford Power stroke than them.

I second that based on the only cold start. Injector orings that are brittle will leak when cold, but start fine warm. Maybe pay a mechanic to actually diag the real issue? 75$ wasted imo. Also I had one doing this same problem. The glow plugs were new, 4 bad new glow plugs. Remeber just cause the glow plug light comes on does not mean they are working. They are super easy to test, lots of glow plug tests on KZbin

Glow plugs if I remeber correctly are 1ohm resistance, they can be tested without removing the valve cover. New parts aren't always working parts. Unfortunately I've dealt with repeat glow plug failures to the point we only use motorcraft. Way better quality. Dorman glow plugs are the worst

What about the Intake air heater relay and the Fuel filter heater in bottom of fuel filter? Did u do compression test when u had glow plugs out? Never heard of this. Curious if you put ammeter on positive side of battery and Key on does it draw close to 90 amps? If not GPR isn’t working or glow plugs just worn out. GPR cost about $15. I had a 2001 with 400,000 mile injectors and it started no matter temp. Glow plugs make a difference.

Did you change your cam position sensor. I started my 2001 e350 one day months ago and it just shut off. It started up but it would stall. My mechanic said it could be the idm I said maybe, my current idm was looking bad so I changed it. Not saying I did not need a new IDM at some point but changed it and had the same problem it would stall. Changed the cam position sensor and it hasn't stalled since. $250 for a IDM or $30 for the sensor.
