The game was ahead of it's time in terms of gameplay. Those animations were so clean. The best the music has ever been as well. And that cover art is godlike. It's what grabbed my attention to it. It was my favorite title until I played Return of Double Dragon. I have a feeling the fan made game Ultimate Double Dragon will be my favorite once I play it.

You can actually download a fan made version of this game and a team worked hard to revamp this game and gave us a true Double Dragon experience. I think my buddy and I came around on this game back then because with all the locally owned video stores, you can only rent the same stuff so many times before you want to try something else and neither of us had thought about this series since the second one so it was us looking for something to rent for a sleepover and we were like okay whatever, let's get Super Double Dragon. Super Double Dragon actually had a lot of depth in its mechanics. You could parry and catch punches, block, power up your meter and do new moves when it was 50% and go into a kind of overdrive state when you were at max. I think the game was great and honestly did a lot of cool stuff with the series. Best beat em up on SNES is still probably Final Fight, but I'd give Super Double Dragon a top 3 spot.

Slow pacing is not a slow down. Slow down occurs in games when there is a frame drop. So it is a different thing. The game still plays great.

My late father got me this when I was a kid growing up in the early 90's. I must have been 5 years old, still have the SNES cartridge. It is such an incredible fighting game. Great variety of enemies bosses and mini bosses. Playing games like Final Fight and this, and Streets of Rage, it was amazing! just saw a re release of Super Double Dragon on STEAM recently!

Interesting thing is DD definitely set the blueprint for the beat em up, and then within 1-2 years, was completely outclassed by better games, despite releasing sequels. It's not that all the sequels were bad, just the genre grew by leaps and bounds every year in the late 80s early 90s, DD never caught back up.

Super Double Dragon was an absolutely amazing entry. As much as I love the first 3 games, Super Double Dragin is my favorite entry in the series. The combat and music were amazing, and the stages looked good, too. Being able to block attacks and counter was such an amazing concept at the time in the beat em up genre. Plus, we got that amazing Paragon9x-Super Double Dragon No.5 (Snapdragon) OC Remix.

Super Double Dragon: The Return of Double Dragon was the BEST DD game of all time. Dedicated punch, kick, jump, AND block buttons. The block could be timed to parry and catch for counters. There were independent charge moves and a special rage feature. To this day, there has not been a side scrolling beat em up game with as deep of a combat system. This came out OVER 30 YEARS AGO! The only thing missing was a dash/run feature. Other than that, it's amazing.

So basically to summarize: there was a rushed out U.S. version for the holiday deadline, a Japanese version made 2 weeks later, a revised version made in 2018, and a port of it to PS4 and Switch in 2023 with a turbo option, but the issue of no intro or ending and no story cutscenes and Miriam not being more prevalent was never resolved. Which gives the Turbo CD Double Dragon II the extra advantage since that game actually had cutscenes... Really seems now like this upcoming Double Dragon game is a spiritual successor to this game. Hopefully its good and the story isnt lacking.

The Switch/PS4 version lets you increase the speed. I highly suggest trying the game at 1.1 speed. I think it makes it very similar to DD2 on the NES, and one of the best beatem ups ever.

the japanese version of super double dragon is called return of dougle dragon and has a longer last level and some differences in physics and techniques. Super and return of double dragon are my favorite double drangon I hope it returns as these games.

The only thing that bothers me about this game is the fact that when you're punching there's zero buffer for the input and because of that you have to either be very fast pressing the punch button or you have to master the rhythm because if you don't, then your punch sequence will be very delayed in between attacks allowing enemies to do their thing.

Super Double Dragon just so happens to be one of my all-time favorite beat em ups. Sure it had flaws but had Technos given the team more time they could've done so much more. However, what we got is still a fantastic game and deserves more credit than what it gets. I proudly own my copy and i proudly play the port on Switch via the collection AND physically i might add! You could mix your punches and kicks together how you wanted for variety, you could catch attacks and counter them, even against some bosses, the weapons were fun, and the music was awesome. The only thing I didn't like is how slowly you moved around. It felt a bit sluggish, but the action was still fantastic.

I remember being blown away by the defensive aspects of this game. I thought "this is the future!" 30 years later, no one has bothered to add a block/counter mechanic since. So disappointing. I never could have imagined that it would be the only beat 'em up to be so innovative. Super Double Dragon was ahead of it's time and, in my eyes, an all-time classic. The music is outstanding as well. I'd take Super DD over the crap new DD game any day.

Can't believe I've never played this version. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons's mechanics are by far the most recent superior. Double Dragon Revive feels like a street fighter 6 world tour clone. Will have to judge how that comes out. Very hopeful to see how the brothers play in the new DLC coming out in River City Girls 2. As a child I had a soft spot for double dragon iii: the sacred stones.

One of the problems with this game is it was crazy expensive like $70 when it came out.

@kordelas2514 Gaiden for starters. But sticking with the original run of games this is it because the bar was so low to begin with. My stance hasn't changed.

@@willdiesel8431 Gaiden is meh in comparison (gameplay, graphic and audio wise). And you can't change my stance. On Monday I will be enjoying Vengeance Hunters, and you can't change anything about it as well. And no, the bar was no low. The game was made specifically for SNES and for cartridge with specific amount of memory. It did not try to be another copy of Final Fight or some other game from the past. IIRC I already had this exchange with you in the past and you still have no valid arguments. You just repeat the same stuff which I debunked in the past.

SDD is the best in the series. Art style is top notch. Music is masterful. It’s so enjoyable but the characters move just a little slow.

This was an okay game. It gets good I'd say. Lot of fun memories of playing it especially when friends would come over and we'd play two player and kick some ass. We had this for our super Nintendo.

Who’s saying Super Double Dragon is a bad game? That game totally rocked and was a fine addition to the series. 🥰
