Episode 72
Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones is often listed among the most difficult NES games of all time, but is it really that hard? It certainly isn't going to be easy with only ONE LIFE to work with. If you health hits zero, that it - Game Over!
The game may be notoriously difficult, but it's also the most technically advanced Double Dragon game on the NES! When the series began, they couldn't even get two player co-op working, but by the third entry developer Technos had not only figured out how to make a good 2 Player mode, but now you can even swap between different characters!
So is Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones really that difficult? And how did this classic game get made? In today's video we'll find out, and then we'll do a deep dive on the game play where we'll learn:
* Easy ways to execute the game's complex martial arts moves!
* How to use the game's new weapons, plus how much damage they deal!
* A secret glitch to freeze a difficult boss!
* How to recruit ALL of the new characters - Chin Seimei and Yagyu Ranzou - plus how to use them!
* TONS of useful info, including the amount of damage each moves deals, Boss HP, and more!
* The secret glitch that allows one player to control BOTH Billy and Jimmy Lee!
* How to complete ALL FIVE Missions - USA, China, Japan, Italy, and Egypt!
* The best strategy for defeating EVERY BOSS... even Princess Noiram... and MORE!
Thanks for watching!

Really blows my mind that one blunder in the intro cut scene (Bimmy & Jimmy) and a little difficulty fueled everyone’s hatred for this game. My favorite of the NES trilogy. Beat it several times. Always a good time!

The hyper realistic music in Japan Stage is purely mesmerizing to this day. It still sounds like real flute play. Yet it's being generated out on an 8-bit system. As a game music enthusiast Double Dragon 3 stands as one of my nostalgically favorite soundtracks.

That stage and when you enter the dojo are my favorite OST from the game. While the first part of Japan felt so authentic like being in Japan, the 2nd part always felt so intense as you walk and the tempo picks up as the ninjas appear.

Outside of the life system, I don't see what's really worse about DD3. I like the larger cast and there's far less platforming than other two games.
@aweirdredtoad3637

@@Lastjustice That's because they put most of the platform in the final stage, and it's fighting system is a step back from DD2
@Lastjustice
@Lastjustice 2 жыл бұрын
@@aweirdredtoad3637 I dislike the button layout of DD2 . The directional attack system was pointless as combat isn't fast enough to warrent having attacks to a set direction. There's zero reason not to have kept the punch/kick set up since you have to mash both together to do most of the special attacks anyways. DD 2 has a ton of platforming in it, which made me say screw this game. I played it last and could not stand the way it handled compared to the other two games.(This makes me extremely biased against it but I found DD2 terrible.) I found you have plenty of attacks in DD 3, especially among the 4 characters, and didn't miss the rising moves like the hyper elbow.
@aweirdredtoad3637
@aweirdredtoad3637 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lastjustice Although I do understand what you mean, but DD2 attack system is very situational especially when two enemies come from both sides. If you're unable to use the spinkick, you punch or backkick to stun the enemy to prompt you into attacking even without the special attacks. Yes, you have alot of moves in DD3 but they are rather situational as well. Some moves not having much power than another, like using the headthrow for the Lee Brothers or the other moves the other two members have. The only useful ones would be the spinkick when it wants to work and grabbing the enemy to beat in their heads. In terms of platforming, it's not as bad as DD1's heavy use of it and all it really does is mix things up to break the monotony of beat em ups. Most NES beat em ups implemented platforming so it wouldn't be a slow run. I'm not saying it's good, but it's certainly not that bad or hard to traverse through. Even DD3 had tricky platforming especially during the final stage when jumping from pillar to pillar or jumping from the stone ride early/late, where death would lead to the loss of a party member that are pretty much your 3 lives in single player. Most of the enemies are cheap as well, either jumpkicking or doing a constant slide move to attack the player.
@Lastjustice
@Lastjustice 2 жыл бұрын
@@aweirdredtoad3637 Double dragon games have way too much platforming for having such tank like jumping controls period. I mean most of these sections would be a cakewalk if you were using mario or megaman to hop through them, but the Lee brothers struggle to get through these jumps. it would be like having a stealth section of a game where you play as the Hulk...some characters aren't build for these kind of things heh. I get they wanted to break up the fighting but this was not the way to do it. I agree one probably has the worst number of obstacles of the 3 games. So many moving platforms and ledges to blindly jump off in the original. The 3rd stage is stupidly long compared to the rest of the game. I was like level 4 does exist when I finally got through that dumb cave part. The action in DD2 isn't fast enough to warrent needing directional attacks. Especially since there's only 2 enemies on screen at a time. It was a clunky control style that was pointless as it was annoying. I can easily manage keeping all the enemies to one side of me in either game. Again the jumping at the end of 2 was what made me want to throw my controller, none of the fighting. If I wanted really beat it I could kept save stating but I didn't like the game enough to even warrent that. In DD3, yes the somersault throw doesn't work no all enemies, but the ones it does you can easily toss to their doom. If you learn to reserve it in midair you can make short work of all the bad guys where there's a ledge to toss them off. That way it doesn't matter which side of a hole they are on. Obviously the Lee brothers offset their move that doesn't work on any enemy by havign tagteam super spin kick that wrecks most enemies in a single hit. A special move the other two do not. The spinkick in general takes down the majority of enemies spamming it. If you and a partner can do it fairly consistently you can cruise through the game. Majority of the movies in all 3 games are fairly superflueous. The platforming in DD 3 is limited to a short part at the end, as the holes are far easier to avoid than the previous games. The worst part probably the room where you ride the moving platform up. I'm sure someone took lost lives to this room. None of it was as prone to end your run as anything in the first two games. The game also gives you two continues to beat the last 2 stages. Its not that long or hard of game.

I actually never got to play this one in the arcade before emulators. But when I did I was shocked at how much better the NES version is. Also this is my personal favorite in the trilogy. The extra characters turned from bosses was such an incredible idea for me at the time and the difficulty didn't bother me as much since starting over on the first level didn't change much. Further i had thought as a kid that the search for the stones to bring Marian back to life after having been killed was a better story.

I didn’t have many games growing up so the majority of the time I just got to play all the other games at friends house etc. which usually didn’t offer me the time to be able to play long enough to master the game so I’m loving being able to watch and see the rest of the games and how they ended! I found this channel by accident a few days ago and since then I have been LOVING IT!!! I found the famicom version of this back in 1992, it was also the first DD game i ever played. Took it home, never laughed at the Bimmy joke since it was in japanese. i have nothing but fond memories of this game and it was our favorite game to play as 2 players, i used to take it with me to Grandma's house of firdays so i can play it with my brother and 2 cousins. We loved it so much, it was not hard, it was normal nes hard and we loved this. I remember we loved the music so much, the end music, we used to finish this game just to listen to the end music for like 20 minutes. Best parts were those small tricks like the reverse hair grab, trying to jump kick the whole drop in italy, counting how many jump kicks it took to kill a mummy. It is by far one of my favorite nes games of all times, the graphics were outstanding. i was so happy when the upgraded version turned out on switch, i am just sad that i lost the famicom cart, it had the most wonderful box art on it. i give this game 10/10, a beloved classic that makes part 4 looks like trash.

I remember having a hard time liking this one back in 1991! I loved the music and the graphics, so I really gave it a shot, renting it about 3 times. When I finally beat the 2nd boss, I was really surprised by its design (changing characters). After going through a good portion of the 4th level, you finally get your only continue in the whole game! Bit of relief! I got to the end boss and couldn't beat the Queen. I let go after that final shot, it felt too exhausting for my young self (and I play all From Software games now). The most underappreciated game in the series, but it got good the more you played it. Double Dragon II felt instantly awesome, making it the ultimate classic Double Dragon. Super Double Dragon was really cool too. The best, I think is Double Dragon Advance. I'm not sold yet on the new Double Dragon Gaiden, but I'm still interested. Brings back great memories!

I'm glad you covered this; it's really not such a bad game. Great soundtrack, too, and I have the strangest memory of listening to it a lot during the week that my sink kept backing up with this weird gray sludge.

@@Oniphire Thanks! It was drawn by a very talented artist and friend of mine as an artist's conception of what I look like (she lives in Indonesia, so we never actually met, but I used to help her with her homework), so I don't think you'll find it anywhere, but my Steam profile has a bigger version, and that should be pretty easy to find, since it's the same username as I have here.

For the Cyclone Kick, you need to press B (or A) at the top height of a standing jump. Mashing A+B will help, but it's not necessary.

Am I the only one that didn't find this that hard? Cheap as hell at times sure(I'm looking at you Cleo with that glitch with her move that pushed your character completely off screen). This is my favorite channel. I'm gonna dust off the NES and start playing later on.

Thanks for taking a look at this game. Overall it's my favorite of the series, though it's definitely far from perfect. Still, there's no difficulty setting, directional controls, and bullshit platforming sections like the second one, and no leveling system and no useless fighting game mode like the first one. Random thoughts . . . The cyclone kick (and all equivalents for other characters) only requires that the player hit B once while in air. I always thought Chin's brother was the second boss in the first Double Dragon, the one you can spawn, then climb down the ladders and "beat." My favorite combo with Ranzou was always sword --> kick because he always felt a little too vulnerable when in the air against a standing foe. That's probably just me. I used to be able to hit the boss of Italy with all 20 shurikens just using my natural sense of rhythm; not sure if I still can. On the mummies, I used the same strategy but with Billy Lee instead of Chin. I guess it doesn't matter.

I got this game years ago, back in the 90's. I beat it ONCE. Just once. After that, I couldn't do it without the quick save feature in the port for the Xbox One. Now that you've done videos for this game and Turtles III, I eagerly await you to do on for Ninja Gaiden 3 and SMB3.

I remember the jump throw being my favorite move, since the button input was so forgiving. I don't remember enemies being able to duck the attack, and you can use it while running. If you miss the cyclone kick when you're standing between two enemies, you're losing health.

Tonight, March 27, 2023, I have just beaten Double Dragon 3 for my very first time!!! On Mission 5, I did a couple of things differently, such as using Ranzou's sword attack on the first two Williams until I knocked them off the first platform. I then used Ranzou for the next platforming room when you get inside the pyramid. As the gladiators start to jump to my platform, I use Ranzou's high jumping ability to go completely over them so that I am on a much wider platform and can knock them off. I also avoided using any jump kicks on the final boss, as you can get torn up if she turns into a snake on you. But everything else really made quick work of the levels, especially the ledge trick on Mission 4. Plus, telling us to make sure you're not directly in front of the final boss, lest you get devastated. I have finally done it. I have now beaten all 3 NES Double Dragons!!!

I played this with game genie, which I figured out how give all the characters 230 some health with some tweaking of the codes in the list that came with it. My lil brothers needed the help, so I'd give them a list of codes to put in to make them have a chance. We'd eventually take the training wheels off and play through game with no extra help. That's how we got battletoads to be manageable as well.
