This is a super easy way to make four hour glass quilt blocks! Whether you want to use 4, 3 or 2 fabrics this tutorial gives you all the information you need. No more making one at a time.
UPDATE 4/13/2022: There is no easy math to figure out what size squares you need for your four patch. I'm working on a chart and as soon as I have it ready, I'll get a blog post made and link to it here.

That is a very nice block and a great technique BUT PLEASE warn new quilters and remind others, that this entire block has bias on every side. I would highly suggest starching the fabric very well before cutting or sewing. I sure do not want new quilters to wonder why their blocks are getting wonky. Also, a bias edge must be pressed, not ironed or it will distort out of shape. Once it has gotten wonky, there is no putting it back. You could try recutting it to get it square again. This technique can absolutely be done but please make sure everyone is aware of the bias edges and how to avoid distorting the blocks. Thank you for your video, you do a wonderful job of explaining.

Thank you thank you thank you Wendy...i found your tutorial on using 3 fabric fascinating. I've been looking for this technique. Is there a calculation sheet available in order to figure out what size your four patch should be in order to wind up with the size you need?

You're welcome, I'm so glad you found it helpful. I'll admit, took me a bit to get that 3 fabric situation figured out myself!! I don't have the formula finalized yet, but hopefully soon. I appreciate you watching and commenting... and asking for what you need. :-)

Hi Wendy! I enjoyed this tutorial. Do you have a resource for calculating the initial size of the 4 patch to get 2.5" finished hour glass blocks.
@WendyJHaney
@WendyJHaney 2 жыл бұрын
Cut the blocks to make your 4-patch to 4" for a 2.5" finished Hour Glass Block. The key is - add 1.5" to the finished hour glass block to determine the size of the square to make your four patch. :-)

@jennifer Kaczor... I am SOOO sorry, but I provided incorrect information on my response. I'm thinking I maybe wasn't thinking of the right video when I responded, but no matter what, I goofed!!! 😥 There isn't any straight forward math when figuring out the sizes for your 4 patch blocks, but I am working on a chart, which when I have together I'll get logged in a block post. But for now... to get a 2.5" finished block, the squares for your four patch should be 2.75" inches. Once again... so sorry!!!
