This was my secret too. Crazy to see someone else who uses it. It’s incredibly good for kicks. Full-ball hits majority of the time when shooting straight at the object ball’s reflection.

It always depends on the table/rails... you cannot use that system on a diamond table. You also have to hit with the right speed to get angle in equal to angle out. Across from the diamonds is also not geometrically correct, because if you use the diamond at the opening of the pocket like he suggested at the beginning, you need to account for the shift of the rest of the diamonds between the corner pocket and the side pocket... the diamond, one diamond from the side pocket would need to shift up aproximately 1/4 of an inch (it'a actually 1 1/8 inches divided by 4); the 2nd diamond would then have to shift about 1/2 inch closer to the side pocket and the 3rd diamond from the side pocket would need to shift 3/4 of an inch toward the side pocket... This would be required so that the points you aim at are the same whether you are banking to the side pocket or the corner pocket. Honestly, it's a lot easier if you simply aim through the diamonds with rolling cue ball. And the diamond near the corner pocket on the long rail is right along the edge of the bottom rail or the top rail... and the diamonds near the corner pocket on the short rails are right on the edge of the long rails. You just aim through the diamonds with rolling cue ball. You can't miss... so if you are banking a ball, you would have to put some draw on the cue ball to put top spin on the object ball, or hit a medium speed and let the ball pick up a natural roll. This does not work on diamond tables very well because they bank short. So you have to aim wider on a diamond table than you might expect. It's way easier to simply find the geometric angle using the diamonds and then adjusting for the table. Since aiming across from the diamonds really is going to only work in one direction banking short to the side pocket. If you do the exact same thing banking to the corner, you will bank wide. (This is why I said you would need to shift the diamonds closer to the side pocket to get the exact same results going both directions.) If you just aim through the diamonds, no shift is required... you simply make any adjustments based on the way the rails play. I used to do almost the exact same method this guy is showing in the video... it works well, but once you switch to aiming through the diamonds, banking becomes way more consistent in my honest opinion.

Wow... looks like diamonds are NOT the way to go, because of your very first observation. It also depends on ball spin as well. (I shoot hard though and am more than a bit unorthodox)(click my name). I throw balls off the rail to alter their bank angle in shots where the standard angle is blocked by other balls. My system, I came up with decades ago, works and one does it in one's head and zero math is needed. It goes as follows... Imagine your table surrounded by four other tables, one on each side and one on each end. On ANY ball out on the playfield of the live table, the angle to bank it to any pocket can be found by projecting a line from the ball to the rail of the live table into the pocket of the ghost table. That is the shot angle and contact point on the rail for a bank on the live table. So for a side pocket bank shot, draw a line from the ball, through the rail, and into the side pocket of the ghost table. That "straight shot" angle and contact point on the rail of the live table will result in a bank on the live table that goes one rail across. It also works with end rail banks. The result is very similar to the split the difference method, and actually matches what that method results in, but I found that it works very well and I do not need to walk up to the table and use my stick to map out angles, which to me is an embarrassing behavior. The table is two squares so projecting one more in any direction is easy and quick in one's mind. I see shot and bank angles as I walk up to the table though and shoot over a shot instead of down on my stick, So I am not your usual suspect.

Good video really, it'd be worth seeing you redo it using proper camera coverage on a tripod and overhead. You had excellent information that was dead on nuts useful. There's so much trash information about using the "diamond system" because most people pitching it don't understand the relationship of the diamonds to the banks, talking about "shooting through the cushion but adding/decreasing English", etc. The reality? The diamonds sit where they do in relation to the cushion because of the rail cloth, it'll be changed out at some point if the table gets enough use; no sense marking something that'll get worn and changed out. LOL! All these snake-oil salesman pitching this and that about how to shoot with the diamonds just gets ridiculous, so thanks for making a video that guides people that just don't know back to some simplicity.

I don't believe in using the diamonds, I bank by feel, because I just know the angles. You have to do it the way it works for you, all that matters is how many you make.

@@brucemiller1696 Yes, I do actually, but I have never used the diamonds. We do so many kinds of bank shots where using diamonds isn't even something you could do anyway. When a ball is touching the rail, you can't use diamonds, you simply have to know where to contact that ball, and when you are doing a multi-rail shot, which is much of what we do, and sometimes you're playing it to change directions and come back, the other way, diamonds are useless. Buddy I play with doesn't use them either and he is a dang good banker.

@@brucemiller1696 No, I'm nothing special. I've just practiced. It's really nothing more than practice, like most anything else. We showed a "Z" bank that we do into the side pocket, that changes directions after it contacts the second rail to a couple guys that play where we do ,a couple months back. I told Fred that if he could do it in 5 tries, I'd buy him a beer,. He did it on the third try. Scot was also able to do the shot. I think anyone who plays pool can be a great banker, if they just practice and they figure out the fundamentals of cue ball contact and how it influences the object ball.

@@brucemiller1696 I call that part "The Harlem Globe Trotter Effect". After all, how can a person hit that one, exact spot on a ball nine feet away with these mushy, non-precise animal bodies? How could he toss the ball in for a swish standing at the half court sideline with his back to the net, while talking to Howard Cosell? Examine my bank shots and you will see that experience is the key. I don't even touch the table on many of my shots. And I am not even left handed. ;-)

I made a video to show Dr Dave (if you are familiar with him) kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3i6g6lpbL54aJY And we have the same table too, the Gold Crown IV, some say it's the best pool table ever made, which I agree of course

Wrong camera set-up. It is in some kind of fish eye mode. Use linear. I designed a table way back in the '70s that had the markers out at the rail nose. In fact, all I did in drafting class was draw pool table segments. Pocket openings, etc. I was only 14 years old then. But in banking, I just "see" the angle and always had a knack for it. I can "see" if I need to open the angle up or close it back to make the shot and the all important keeping of the cue ball out of the shot path and out of a pocket part.
