Looking into doing the same thing. I would have given this a thumbs up just for your dog's puppy eyes, but the electrical work is the most important part of this project and you flew through it. It would have been nice if you would have given some insight into the electrical. Thanks for the links into the products!

Thanks for watching! Sorry about the electrical part 😩 I’ve gotten that comment a few times but unfortunately it was August in Iowa when I filmed so my attic was like 130° lol I should have done an example of the wiring though! Ultimately each light is just wired in series from one to the other.

What size holes did you cut? I’m getting the 6 inch lights, do I need to make the hole smaller?
@ModernHobbyist
@ModernHobbyist Жыл бұрын
For my lights, it recommended a 6.25" hole, but it came with instructions and a cutting template too. My lights are labelled as 6" lights as well, so I would think it'd be the same for you. Hope that helps!

Are these typically installed in series? Got everything else figured out except for the choice of series vs parallel. Great video nicely explained!
@ModernHobbyist
@ModernHobbyist 2 ай бұрын
It’s technically parallel, white to white and black to black throughout, but series in the sense that you run wire from one light to the next (rather than from the source to each light individually). Hope that makes sense!

I'm thinking about getting these for my soffit. Do you recommend them for soffit?
@ModernHobbyist

From what I can tell, the company and Amazon reviews all say they are wet rated and would work well for soffit. I haven't tried them in soffit myself, but it seems it'd work well. Hope that helps!

I just had these put in but I want to change them to a warmer color. Do they pull out easily? I’m worried about breaking the springs or damaging the drywall.
@ModernHobbyist
@ModernHobbyist 3 ай бұрын
I’ve removed mine a couple times for the same reason, they aren’t too bad to take out. Just pull it down a bit from the edge and push one of the spring clamps back with your finger until it slides out of the drywall 👌🏽.

I’ve never seen someone use a power drill to screw in light switch faceplate screws…..lol. Good video anyway. And ps, when tightening down light switch faceplates, all the screws should be straight up and down, or 12 and 6 o’clock position to a snug fit.
@ModernHobbyist
@ModernHobbyist 3 ай бұрын
You underestimate my level of impatience! Ain't nobody got time to hand screw all the faceplate screws lol
3 ай бұрын
@@ModernHobbyist lol. True and I appreciate your sense of humor. But man, it was ONE faceplate at the main entrance…….not like you were screwing in a thousand faceplates at a convention centre installation. It also shows that attention to detail was paid btw which reflects on ALL the work that was done in the home…….especially when selling if you flip homes. Just a thought good man! 👍🏼

I keep looking for a video on how to do the wiring. Everyone just flies through that part.
@ModernHobbyist
@ModernHobbyist 3 ай бұрын
Yeah sorry about that! It was 100º here in Iowa so I couldn't stand being in the attic long enough to film anything. Wiring is simple enough though, basically all the lights will be wired in series. It gets more complicated if you have a three-way switch setup, but essentially the neutral, hot and ground from the first light just connect to the corresponding neutral, hot and ground on the second light which connects to the third, etc... Hard to explain in words, but I hope that makes sense!

thank god you rewired that outlet, never pass the neutral through the plug to another wire. Dumbest thing you could do. Outlets are only rated for 15amp circuitry, clearly 20 amp circuits can exceed that limit, which are fairly common. When you pass the electricity through the plug instead of a junction splice, you risk turning that plug outlet into a filament for the brand new micro heater you just installed into that junction box.

Good to know! Sadly that wasn’t the only electrical no-no I’ve seen in my house so far. Most of them have been updated, but the previous owners decided to build a shower on top the the electrical panel…

Be careful when using these lights, they tend to flicker with the slightest load being on the same circuit.
@ModernHobbyist
@ModernHobbyist 3 ай бұрын
I haven’t had any issues with that in my home, but I also run the lights off of the Lutron Dimmer which specifically supports LEDs. So my first guess at the cause of flickering would be the switches you are using
