Flash Comics No. 20 Conservation Episode 2: Dry Cleaning.
In this video series we evaluate this golden age comic book--Flash Comics #20, from August 1941--for conservation and submission to CGC. In today’s video i’ll dry clean the comic book using document cleaning powder, a document cleaning pad, and eraser, and show you the before and after pictures!
The materials and methods I use are archival and are reversible. If done properly, they do not result in a purple restored label from CGC.

Dear Dr Paul, I’ve been using dry swifter initially on dirty books then the pads and then the archival document pad alongside eraser shavings and an eraser of course. Some books are so sensitive that the only thing you can use is the archival shavings. I use the absorene very infrequently if the book is really dirty and requires it. Thanks for the great tips.

There's everything from gum erasers, white erasers, to vinyl erasers and kneaded erasers. I'm just not sure was distinguishes them (I'm a beginner). Hey Dr. Paul, had a question about the Lineco Document cleaning powder I purchased from your Amazon store. I ordered a bottle of this stuff and is it normal for it to be a bit lumpy? As I have used the ones from the pad and they appear to be finer powder should I return this or is there something I need to do to the bottle to break it up? Thanks 🙏 in advance for any help 😊

Put the book on a sheet of wax paper or parchment when you use the dry cleaning pad so you can simply pick it up, bend it in half, and dump the bits back onto the book. Sometimes when you pinch them up, they get clumpy. Always done that myself.

I do have a document cleaning pad, picked it up when I started cleaning & pressing, but have never used it. Will be incorporating into my dry cleaning toolbox.

Wow. I was not aware they sold these eraser crumbs. I do love my moo eraser leftovers, not sure they qualify as crumbs. But I have found them pretty safe to use similarly. Will have to try these. Love a new tool for the kit. And a how to use them video to boot. Dr. Paul your too kind to us.

Would using a cotton round rather than hands with the eraser crumbs?

Johnny, possible, but remember cotton rounds can be quite abrasive. They tend to lift ink from comic book from this era, so i would be careful. But that doesn't mean with some care that you couldn't get a great result with the document powder and cotton rounds.

In this case Johnny yes as it is severe, and includes those ripped pages. Going to top us out around 4.5 maybe?
