Nice video. I just finished building, or repurposing my 2015 Giant TCX Advances Pro 1 frame and wheels with the following: - SRAM Eagle XX1 AXS rear derailleur - SRAM Eagle XX1 10-52 rainbow cassette and chain - SRAM Force AXS Hydraulic shifters (road shifters) - Keeped the original ROTOR crank and BB, but swapped the double ring to a single SRAM 40 teeth narrow/wide ring - Keeped the original SRAM S-Series Post Mount hydraulic brake calipers (broke 1 Banjo for Road Hydalulic Disc Brake Hose Non Connectamajig....., waiting for part ordered to arrive in order to finish the build) - Same handlebar - Same Giant P-CXR1 WheelSystem; 24mm wide, Alloy wheels. But had to swap out the Shimano free hub with a DT-Swiss XDR hub I had laying around. Added a 1.85mm spacer before putting on the monster SRAM 10-52 cassette. - Mounted 50mm Schwalbe G-One Utltrabite tubeless tires - Added Shimano PD-EH500 pedals. I haven't ridding the bike yet properly, just testing the main things; shifting, single chain ring, singe brake (since I broke one...) and overall handling with the pedals and massive gearing ratio being a 40 front to 10-52 rear!

@@LeoInterHyenaem Thank you. The bike is FULLY 100% funtional now and I am in love with it. I just swapped the tires for 45 wide ones that are more for road and dirt/gravel and it is a beast. I seriously think that even road cycling will end up going to single speeds at some point. Went out on a 65km dirt/mud/snow/road ride this past Friday and it was a delight to ride. No issues what so ever. Shifting is like butter and once you hit the pavement, you fly compared to the MTB guys. The only place where the MTB have an advantage is on the downhills that are rocky/unstable since the gravel bike is "hard front and tail" ...

#ASKGCNTECH Is there a difference in performance when riding a lighter bike compared to you losing weight?
@matthewlemin50774 жыл бұрын
If you are heavier the centre of gravity of the bike+rider is higher - which will make handling less stable. If you are lighter the centre of gravity is lower, which is more stable but you would need to lean into the corners more. The main advantage of losing weight as a rider is it is FREE!!! In fact, fewer burgers, mac-n-cheeses, lasagnes and bacon sarnies will save you money. Whereas losing 2kg off the bike could cost you a grand. Also, don't forget aerodynamics. A fat bloke like me presents a larger cross section to the air - so losing weight has dual cycling benefits, not to mention all the health benefits. A no-brainer really...

17 teeth differential on chainrings must be pushing the limit!:? Isn't Shimano recommendation 16 max, or is GRX different?
@docontra49214 жыл бұрын
GRX is different; the 48-31 is the stock shimano part ( bike.shimano.com/en-US/product/component/grx-11-speed/FC-RX810-2.html ). Note that GRX front derailleurs and cranks are incompatible with the rest of their road components because the chainrings sit further outboard from the frame compared to the road cranks to allow frames with bigger tire clearances (all other GRX 600 and GRX 800 level components, including both shifters and chainrings, are compatible with 11 speed Dura-Ace/Ultegra/105).
@docontra49214 жыл бұрын
#askgcntech Is it possible to swap the chainrings in a GRX crank for larger road versions? (assuming good frame clearance) Given the kind of riding I do (urban in a particularly flat and poorly surfaced city) and my natural tendency towards low cadence riding, my ideal bike would be a gravel bike with a subcompact (52/36) crank.
@armadillito4 жыл бұрын
@@docontra4921 there a loads of options out there (perhaps more in previous model years) that just use 105 or ultegra sub compacts with 11-32 or 34 at the back. (Aftermarket cassettes up to 11-40 are available and can work okay, apparently)

Can a MTB be converted to a gravel bike?
@docontra49214 жыл бұрын
Yes, and there have been quite a few (early '90s 26ers!) submitted to "Screw riding up grades, buy upgrades!" in the GCN tech show. However, it's not quite as simple as throwing a drop-bar handlebar and road levers at your current bike. Couple of things to consider: - If you're starting from scratch (don't have the mtb frame just yet), just buy a gravel bike unless you absolutely positively have to have a monster tire clearance (> ~45-622 ETRTO) and/or front suspension - Swapping to drop-bars will change the fit of the bike; you should change your stem too ("do a bike-fit*") - You most likely can use road-specific derailleurs with flat bars (Shimano shifters tend to be cross-compatible with the entire road/mtb range of a given generation and same amount of gears; Shimano explicitly offers flat-bar derailleurs for Claris, Sora and Tiagra). - Changing the wheel size of your bike (i.e., from 26" to 700c) is not a particularly good idea, but can be done if you really know what you're getting into - If you want to change your groupset to something modern, you will need to swap your rear hub/rear wheel if your bike has 7 or less gears at the rear, and may need swap it if you're going to a groupset with more gears at the rear than the bike originally came with. If your frame is disc brake compatible but came with rim brakes, you'll most likely need to swap both hubs if you want to switch to disc brakes (the hubs likely don't have the mounts for disc rotors). - You'll likely have to run 1x (single front chainring) or smaller 2x chainrings due to fit issues (the rear triangle of an MTB tends to be much wider than the rear triangle of road bikes and bigger chainrings will rub on the frame)**. As a reference, the largest large chainring you may be able to fit is 48t. - If your bike doesn't have mounts for disc brakes, you'll have to use cantilever brakes/v-brakes. If you're switching to drop bars this complicates things as, depending on the groupset you want to use, the brakes may not be fully compatible with road rim brake levers (Cantilever/V-Brakes and modern road rim brakes generally have different cable pull ratios). There is a way to get around this with pull-ratio adjusters -- featured in old Ask GCN Tech segments but the specific company recommended apparently has gone out of business -- or you may luck out and find 3rd party cantilever/v-brakes with revised pull ratios. - If your bike does have disc brake caliper mounts, check for compatibility of the caliper with your frame before buying, esp. if your frame is older as caliper mount standards have changed (you'll probably have to use older/lower groupset tier MTB calipers -- should have no compatibility issues if you're using shimano -- or mount adaptors) - Solid 650b (27.5"/584 ETRTO), 700c (29", 622 ETRTO) and possibly 26" (559 ETRTO) MTB front forks are readily available and may make for a nice upgrade, depending on the state of your current fork and what you plan to ride on (I ride mostly on tarmac, a solid fork is almost a no-brainer 😊) * : Not necessarily a professional bike-fit, but you will need to adjust the stem length and seat position to the new handlebars. **: I technically ride an MTB (Hardtail XC frame) gravel bike 😊 assembled by my LBS, with a solid front fork, narrow and long (for today's MTB standards) flat bar/stem combo, Alivio shifters and 3x front derailleur/crank (48-36-26), Sora rear derailleur/cassette (11-25), and cheap and cheerful Tektro Auriga Comp hydraulic disc brakes.
@anurag-214 жыл бұрын
@@docontra4921 appreciate the time you have taken to explain each things anyways I'm starting from scratch I just bought a mtb frame 29er and was thinking to have rigid fork setup with 29*2.0 tires and ALIVIO 3x9 or deore 2x10 or 2*11 groupset with hydraulic discs and flat handlebars if you want to know the brand of the frame it's Mountainpeak Everest 2 bought it in Philippines have direct mount FD internal cabling and smooth weldings have a look on the frame and share ur opinion
@docontra49214 жыл бұрын
@@anurag-21 No worries! You'll have little to no compatibility problems, esp. since all your components will be modern and, since you're using flat bars, your brakes are completely independent of your shifters giving you more options. Your setup will depend on the kind of riding you want to do and the frame clearance: - Alivio 3x9 will be cheaper to buy and maintain (esp wearable items -- cassettes, chainrings/chainset, chains), have better range with closer ratios, and a higher top gear than with Deore (Alivio 3x tend to have chainsets with a big ring of >=40t and up to 48-36-26, Deore 2x all seem to be 36t-26t) which makes it more suitable for mainly road riding. The downside is that the 3x front derailleur setup and use is slightly more fiddly, and that you have more "unusable" gears (the top of the cassette on the large chainring and the bottom of the cassette on the small chainring) - Deore 2x10/2x11 (and SLX 2x12) will give you higher quality components at a higher price (esp. maintenance, as the chains especially wear more quickly), and will be better suited for hilly riding and more off-road riding (although given the gearing options of the 2x, I'd personally seriously consider going 1x11 or 1x12). However, if the GRX chainset fits the frame it becomes a viable option (esp. on 2x11) If you decide on the 3x9 option and you're riding on flatter terrain, consider using a Sora rear shifter/cassette, you'll be giving up on range but will gain closer ratios (I run an 11-25 casette with the 48-36-26 and I can climb pretty much every hill I care to ride on the 36t chainring, but I live in an exceptionally flat bit of the world 😊) Whatever you do, don't buy your wheelset (or at the very least, rear wheel/rear hub) until you decide which gearing option you will use. Freehubs are made for specific types of cassettes, although if supported by the manufacturer, you may run cassettes with a smaller number of gears than what the freehub is designed for by running spacers or have the option of interchangeable freehub bodies. You can find 3rd party 10/11 speed cassettes designed to fit hubs for 9/10 speed casettes respectively (typically by either using a 10t sprocket as a lockring, or more commonly, using a huge sprocket as the lower casette that clears the hub flange). PS: If the frame has a threaded bottom bracket and you decide to go the Alivio route, consider using an Octalink BB/Crankset instead of the Hollowtech-II BB/Crankset, I had two crank failures with Hollowtech-II Alivio cranks 😊 (in both cases, the splines on the NDS crank failed, and the NDS crank suddenly came loose -- without falling off -- and wouldn't hold its position)

I built up a Warbird when Uncle Sam sent me a check and I grew tired of playing "Dodge the Bentley" on my road routes. I object on principle to the GRX front derailleur because of crank compatibility issues; I installed a FSA 48/32 SL-K Light crank and used a standard Ultegra FD and RX800 rear mech since I didn't want the gearing restraints of the full GRX build. I gotta say I'm a little disappointed in Team Blue for sending out demo parts for promotions when shops can't get barbs and olives for hydro brakes, 12 speed derailleurs are backordered until the heat death of the universe and you'll probably never see an eight speed cassette again. I realize the marketing and supply divisions are separate entities, and Shimano has always been phenomenal with customer service, but sending out parts to promote when those same parts won't be available for months, if this year, seems kind of tone deaf.

44 is wide... 42 is just standard... I know because I am on some cowchipper salsa 44 bars and then they are WIDE... But comfort as none for me. We will see then what happens on a 42 next year.

Dear all the bikeshops, I don't understand why you cut cables with a squeeze-cutter, I always cut my cablings with dremel or handsaw and they are much more stiff. Some parts don't even require capsules it's so smooth. Seriously, you have all the tools but why you ruin the tip of cables with squeeze-cutters?

Not entirely sure of the point of this beautiful to watch video. No individual installation of any one part carries enough detail to learn from. So just art, then?

Is it a competition? I want to win the rowdy bike; when should I collect it?

#GCNTech Now that the weight limit isn't really a issue with the pros anymore, as it's easy for the teams to get their bikes below the weight these days and now the UCI have effectively banned the riders from riding on their top tubes when descending do you think we'll see more teams adopting the dropper post as this would effectively allow them to get to basically just as low and in a safe way?

The Mason should have had a flat bar instead of drop bars because basically it is a mountainbike. This version looks like it would be hard to control in the type of terrain those wheels were designed for.

That's just a mountainbike with handlebars from a road-bike. GCN is going to suckle the tit of the next niche thing the bike industry tries to implement to earn more money.

All porn jokes aside, I loved the video. The slow-mo made my wife wonder what the hell I was watching.....
