I ride 105 and would only upgrade to switch from mechanical to Di2. So far I've been incredibly happy with my 105 R7000. The performance has been amazing, the components have proven to be well built and sturdy and the potential cost of replacement parts is much more manageable than the higher ranges.

The rear derailleur is the MVP of the 105 groupset! The GS version can easily handle an 11-40 cassette with compact chainrings without the b screw cranked all the way down despite what Shimano says. It's very handy for gravel bikes. Give me ALL the gears for my sissy little legs!

I’ve been using a 105 for almost a year would like to add that the right brake lever tends to rattle after time (started last month for me) & that is because unlike Ultegra has a rubber stopper inside that 105 does not have. The Ultegra also uses a different pin to hold the lever that isn’t as prone to degrading. Other than that, I have no complaints with the 105

thanks for the great in-depth review. One thing struck me though: 11:20 and the claim that Shimano has the best FD shifting. I would argue that anything from Record and Chorus shifts as well if not better. The thing is: Shimano has the best chainrings for front shifting. I tend to use Shimano cranks for their superior stiffness in combination with trimmable Campagnolo ergopowers, and I currently like the Campa FD with the longer lever so this makes for very fast and effortless shifting.

I got my 105 an upgraded cassette to 40T (from 32T), not a 105 component anymore, and it really helped me a lot with very steep climbs on long journeys. I didn't need to put a spacer (which i bought one ahead, a waste of money) to adjust the RD. Crank is still 50-34T. Surprisingly, it feels and responds better when shifting.

I've been on a Tiagra groupset for 6 years and can't say I really have any complaints. I'll be stepping up to a SystemSix Evo with 105s this fall, so it's a decent upgrade in my mind. I think regular maintenance and cleaning makes a world of difference, don't you?

Axxl's Gallery Well, I don’t have much experience to provide a comparison. I would expect someone using 105 who had used Tiagra would dar the same thing you did, clunky but adequate. All I can truthfully say is that with regular maintenance and cleaning (even though I haven’t changed the cables yet, which would be significant) Tiagra has done well for over 4,000 miles.

I will never clean my bike myself I mean. I will just put it off with a mechanic and go drink a coffee (no sugar!) or 2 like 2km further and when he rings me up when it's finished it's done properly and everything is clean and good to go again. Also I bought the Scott speedster 10 (2022 model) with the 105-r7000 for 2000 euros and have to do a bikefitting first 12 August this year by someone who works for Bora Hanshroge and was with them at the Giro this year and that goes to Classica San sebastian and Vualta a Espana. He will make me a food schedule and also the best schedule for rides and will do a follow up every 3 months. (I have to pay for the pro bikefitting not the basic one and it's very low price imo then)

Yeah! 105 workhorse for the everyday workman! Rim brakes! For me I can't install disc brakes on my ancient titanium nice road bike. There might be flex issues and would have to buy a whole new wheel set then take it to a mechanic bike shop to cold spread the rear drop outs. Too much work and cost. Actually using the modern 105 calipers rim brakes in my mixed group set. Feel is the same as a very nice old high end calipers of years gone by! I know from using shimano that 105 is it! Like they said in the videos. Only weight weenies would upgrade to ultegra. Now an electronic shifting group set for 105 at price point would be the icing on the cake!

Last year I built up a Lynskey Backroad Ti frame with a 105 group set and couldn’t be happier with it. I'm planning to buy a new Roadbike in fall and I've been contemplating about whether to purchase 105 or Ultegra. I'll probably go for the 105 cause it'll spare me a hefty 500€ compared to the same bike equipped with Ultegra and 300gr extra weight is nothing to worry about for an average rider.

Tiagra 4700 is a seriously underrated group, my gravel bike came with a full Tiagra 4700 drivetrain and Shimano's non series RS405 hydraulic brake levers, and it works flawlessly. One great thing about it beeing 10 speed is that you can use a mountain bike 11-36 cassete which is great for off road riding. Another great thing is that 4700 shares the same cable pull as the 11 speed groups so I have my bike setup with an ultegra RX clutch derailleur to cut down on the chain slap noise, works flawless. I have another gravel bike with a full Shimano GRX 800 group which is ultegra level and while it does feel better the shifting performance diference is not as big as the price diference. Save money using 10 speed Tiagra 4700 and spend it on nicer wheels and tires.

I’m loving this groupset on my Diverge. But also using a Triban RC500 as a commuter, I can safely confirm, that once indexed properly, shifting speed, crispness and feel through the pedals is just as good with a Sora r3000. In my experience, the main difference is at the levers, which, on the r7000, feel smoother and also sound better as you click through the gears. And, obviously, there’s two more cogs. I’ve never tried Ultegra, but I’m very curious how mechanical shifting could feel any better than this. Maybe I’m just not sensitive enough.

The only things I wish 105 7000/7020 had was a clutch derailleur and quieter shifting. I ride a lot of gravel, and having a clutch would be very useful with chain slap. Also, the shifting in the rear cassette seems clunky at times when riding faster. I noticed a significant difference in sound and weight when I upgraded to a new wheelset with a new ultegra cassette/rotors.

Be careful once you've tasted a dura ace group set of old or new and you become jaded with sweetness. Rim brake old school versions. No need to upgrade once you've got 105. Night and day from the sora group set.

Hi I have a new ribble bike fitted with 105 group set but I find the chain rubs the front mech when in the small chain ring at the front & smallest cog at the rear , is this acceptable! As I do realise some gear combinations don't mix & May not be able to adjust out with out comprising the rest of the shifting. Thanks, Ian

Hi great review. About cross-chaining. Its always not recommended by manufactures for groupsets with 2 front chain rings such as the 105 your testing. How then does it not matter for a one-by 11/12 speed groupset?

On actual 1X cranks (not conversions), the single chainring is moved slightly inboard of the big ring to help correct the chainline.

this did-not age well 🥺. not-only is the Shimano 105 R7000 the *last* version of Shimano 105 in mechanical-shifting-*AND*-rim-brakes, but-also the latest-version of Shimano 105 is *hydraulic-disk-brake ONLY* 🥺.

can someone tell me what is the difference between R7000, R7010 and R7020?
@bikeradar
@bikeradar Жыл бұрын
Sure. The '10' and the '20' bits within the name tell you a bit more about the brakes on the groupset... R7000 - 105 with standard rim brakes R7010 - 105 with direct mount rim brakes R7020 - 105 with hydraulic disc brakes (you also get the 105 mechanical shift/hydraulic brake levers) Otherwise, the three versions are identical with mechanical 11-speed shifting.

I have ultegra di2 on my road bike but downgraded the crankset to 105 after seeing @thanksshimano. Seems like the 105 cranks are better made? Kind of made mechanical ultegra redundant it seems to me now.

Hey! Who you calling ugly! I've got rs505 shifters on both my road and cx bikes. Although, I spend many an evening gazing longingly at them, whilst riding I never look at them, nobody else can see them and they work just fine.

The 105 hydraulic levers don't have the bite point / free stroke adjustment that you get with Ultegra hydraulic levers, was disappointed to find that out when mine arrived, can't really justify the upgrade yet though. Otherwise a great groupset.

Slightier heavier yes, but without the catastrophic failure of ultegra and dura-ace. The real weight comes from the shifters/cassette. Just buy a ultegra cassette and xtr disc rotors and you are good to go.

Only £160 difference between ultegra and 105?? 🤔
@bikeradar
@bikeradar 4 жыл бұрын
On Wiggle, you would currently pay ~£440 for a 105 rim brake groupset and ~£629 for the equivalent Ultegra groupset, so a ~£190 difference as of today. The difference at RRP is far greater (~£500) but, as mentioned in the video, street pricing for Shimano groupsets is always wildly different to the RRP. Hope that helps! Jack

@bikeradar
@bikeradar 4 жыл бұрын
Personally, I'm not convinced we'll ever see it. I think there is more work to do refining electronic groupsets - wireless, for example - before it trickles down to a more affordable level. We've speculated a little on this here: www.bikeradar.com/features/shimano-dura-ace-r9200/

@@sambarrett4726 I highly doubt we'll see a 105 Di2, bike market is too smart for that. If they relase a 105 Di2 in a budget category tier they can't properly market the ultegra and dura ace Di2 anymore since we can get a budget Di2 in 105. So yeah i highly doubt we'll see a 105 Di2.

Assuming you're running the current generation on all Shimano components, there won't be any problems. Heck, you can even run Dura-Ace R9100 STI levers with Ultegra R8000 derailleurs if you like.
