Guys, this isn't the Switch version, that version barely changes the game, this is the PC version made by fans, it runs on PC without needing an emulator and it's much easier to mod, since it is not limited by the power of the Nintendo 64, and it also has a mod for different models. Also, these models are inspired by the artworks used in boxarts and advertising, Mario is supposed to look just like he was in the cover.

I would never trade my memories playing this as a 6/7 year old and Zelda 64 for anything material in this world. There was really something special about gaming in the mid 90s through the early 2000s that can not be duplicated. Even with the insane graphics and huge worlds in the newest gens there's something they can't capture that they did in this time. I honestly think even though many of these games were very hard the simplicity amplified the magic for me.

SM64 Full Development: In the early 1990s, director and producer Shigeru Miyamoto conceived a 3D Mario design during development of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) game Star Fox (1993). He considered using the Super FX chip to develop a SNES game, Super Mario FX, with gameplay based on "an entire world in miniature, like miniature trains". He eventually reformulated the idea for the Nintendo 64, not for its substantially greater power, but because its controller has more buttons for gameplay. According to engineer Dylan Cuthbert, who worked on Star Fox, no game titled Super Mario FX had ever entered development, but rather "Super Mario FX" was the code name of the Super FX chip. Super Mario 64 was developed over approximately three years, with one year spent on the design concept and approximately two years on production. Production began on September 7, 1994, and concluded on May 20, 1996. According to Miyamoto, most of the time there were approximately 15 to 20 people working on the game. Development began with the characters and camera system. Miyamoto and the other designers were unsure of which direction to take; months were spent selecting a camera view and layout. The original concept involved a fixed path like an isometric-type game (similar to Super Mario RPG), before the choice was made to settle on a free-roaming 3D design. Although the majority of Super Mario 64 features the free-roaming design, elements of the original fixed path concept remain, particularly in the three Bowser encounters. One of the programmers, Giles Goddard, explained that these linear elements survived as a means to force players into Bowser's lair rather than encourage exploration. When we were stuck on talk of the spectacular 3D graphics of Mario 64 and racing games, we saw a huge hit in the form of [Bandai's] Tamagotchi - a tiny key chain boasting pictures made up of no more than 10 or 20 dots. At that time, I thought that Mario 64 had lost to Tamagotchi. [laughs. Miyamoto quickly adds in English: "I'm serious."] -Shigeru Miyamoto 3D graphics were created using the Nichimen N-World toolkit running on a Silicon Graphics workstation. The team placed high priority on Mario's movement, and before levels were created, they tested and refined Mario's animations on a simple grid. The first test scenario for controls and physics involved Mario interacting with a golden rabbit, named "MIPS" after the Nintendo 64's MIPS architecture processors; the rabbit was included in the final game. The developers tried to a multiplayer cooperative mode, whereby players would control Mario and his brother Luigi in split-screen, but could not make it work satisfactorily. To assist players with depth perception, the team positioned a faux shadow directly beneath each object regardless of the area's lighting. Assistant director Yoshiaki Koizumi described the feature as an "iron-clad necessity" which "might not be realistic, but it's much easier to play." Miyamoto's guiding design philosophy was to include more details than earlier games, using the Nintendo 64's power to feature "all the emotions of the characters". He likened the game's style to a 3D interactive cartoon. Some details were inspired by the developers' personal lives; for example, the Boos are based on assistant director Takashi Tezuka's wife, who, as Miyamoto explained, "is very quiet normally, but one day she exploded, maddened by all the time Tezuka spent at work." In the game, the Boos shrink when Mario looks at them, but when he turns away, they grow large and menacing. Super Mario 64 features more puzzles than earlier Mario games. It was developed simultaneously with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but as Ocarina of Time was released more than two years later, some puzzles were taken for Super Mario 64. Information about Super Mario 64 was leaked in November 1995, and a playable version was presented days later as part of the Nintendo 64 premiere (then known as the "Ultra 64") at Nintendo Space World. At this point, the basic controls had been implemented and the game was 50% finished, featuring 32 courses, though only about 2% of mapping was complete. Miyamoto had hoped to create more courses, but only 15 courses could fit. According to Nintendo of America chairman Howard Lincoln, Miyamoto's desire to add more was a major factor in the decision to delay the Nintendo 64 release from Christmas 1995 to April 1996. Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi later commented, "Game creators can finish games quickly if they compromise. But users have sharp eyes. They soon know if the games are compromised. [Miyamoto] asked for two more months and I gave them to him unconditionally."

As someone who grew up with and still loves the DS version of this game, I can't deny that THIS is the definitive way to play Mario 64. These new visuals honestly seal the deal for me. DS may have added three new playable characters, a handful of new bonus levels with new boss fights, 30 additional stars, a few new mechanics, an improved camera system, enhanced (depending on your opinion) visuals, and more coins for courses like Dire Dire Docks and Tick Tock Clock (which makes 100 coin stars less of a hassle), but it honestly missed the mark when it came to controlling Mario. I managed to get accustomed to the controls with some time, but it just doesn't compare to the way the N64 version feels. With the new art style that feels like the game's art came to life, the N64 version has finally taken the throne for me as the best way to play Mario 64. My dream version of this game that will never happen is a marriage of the two versions of the game. Keep the N64 version as a base and add DS elements from there. The star count would be 150, but stars would be based off the N64 version primarily (Shoot to the Island in the Sky, Into the Deep Freeze, and Five Itty Bitty Secrets would return while Big Bob-omb's Revenge, Yoshi's Ice Sculpture, and Klepto the Condor would be removed). The camera controls, improved coin totals for main courses, additional levels, and the 30 additional stars would return alongside the three additional characters. Power-ups would work like the N64 version though, meaning every character can use all three caps. You would start out as Mario, and you would unlock Luigi and Wario either by finding keys hidden throughout the levels and the castle (like the mods for the PC port) or by playing their respective levels from the DS version. Yoshi would be unlocked after beating the game (not after collecting every star so his inclusion actually means something) and gaining access to the roof of the castle, much like the N64 version. The art style would be like this mod. You would have the option to exit a level after gaining a star, but as long as there is at least one more star in the level, you would be able to stay in and not get booted out. The minigames could return, but I personally wouldn't throw a fit if they didn't (wasn't the biggest fan of chasing all the rabbits to unlock them). Sorry for this forum post of a comment, just wanted to get my ideas out there about this game that I and many others love. (*cough* 3D All Stars port is bad *cough* still bought it though cause they're great games *cough cough*)

When I first beat Bowser in the first battle, I had thrown him through his breathed fired into the spiky bomb, and I naturally thought it was the fire that had defeated him. That recently gave me a cool idea for a Mario-Bowser video I'm working on: Mario dodges Bowser's spat fireballs and knocks him into one of the fires on the ground. But how? Based on statistics and probability, which move would work best: wall jump, side flip, front flip, or back flip? Whatever the move, it's going to be a kick to send Bowser into the fire, either on his side or his shell (unless the shell protects _ALL_ of Bowser from the fire he's in). I guess the front somersault wouldn't work, assuming Bowser would get out of the way in time, having seen Mario's three jumps. Back flip? Maybe not, because Mario couldn't see Bowser very well from his flip and motioned angle, and fail to stomp on him? What do you guys think? Envision the move that would most likely get Bowser into a set fire. Even though it's _MY_ video, I still want to be realistic and logical, even for a cartoon. That's what _I_ want.
