Man it sucks that your channel basically gets shafted by KZbin for no reason. I know a lot of people talk about how a certain youtuber is underrated, but I really mean it with your channel. The videos you make are just as high quality as a bunch of other channels that are really popular. You deserve way more. KZbin's whole algorithm sucks ass.

Just think, this game is 28 years old now. It's almost three times as old now as the original Super Mario Bros. was when this came out. It's amazing they went from the first Super Mario game to 64 in just 11 years.

I can’t articulate how astounding it was first seeing this game in motion on GamesMaster in the UK. 10 years old, been playing 2D games for most of my short life, and I don’t think I’ll ever be as floored as I was then. Love this game. One of my favourites. Also thought the end credits music was really melancholic. Audio definition of happy-sad

1:32:41 How this works, there’s a speed cap to how fast the long jump can be. Since the backwards long jump isn’t supposed to exist, the cap only applied towards the long jump’s forward momentum. So it allows Mario to move ridiculously fast when doing it backwards.

I like the idea that Mario has a more gruff "real" voice, and the Charles Martinet voice is his "commercial" voice, like it is in the Illumination Mario movie. This kind of explains the dramatic voice change.

22:17- Eh. There's a distinction. Yeah, it's a changing of the voices, but Martinet wasn't replaced- he retired of his own volition, which can't really be said for the Sonic voice actors. If anything, more people accepted it compared to those in the Sonic fandom who go on about why they didn't accept Jason Griffith or Roger Craig Smith taking over the role.

Gotta love how the SM64DS playable characters could be seen as a slight unintentional representation of the game history and future. Luigi with rumors and cut multiplayer, Mario being the main playable character, Yoshi I guess could be seen as a rumor proved real, and Wario representing the future creepypastas based on the game.

Man, this game takes me baaaaaaack... I was 5 years old when this game originally released, but I wouldn't own the game until just a little after Christmas of 1998 when our family would meet my soon-to-be stepdad. As a result, the first game I owned was Super Mario All Stars: Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo (both of which I still own even after all these years!). Mind, the first game I *played* was the original Super Mario Bros. on the original NES. A lot of my early memories involved me, my brother and my mother playing these games together and asking our cousins from both sides of the family for help. How to beat a Ghost House in Super Mario World here. How to get out of Edward's Dungeon in Illusion of Gaia there. Then 1998 rolled. We were visiting our stepdad in what would eventually be our new home state of Florida (we lived in California at the time and would move in 2002). Christmas came and I finally got one of the systems our cousins had - the N64! Byndled with it was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time; both that game and A Link to the Past, would be my first Zelda games. Great introductions to rmthat series. While it wasn't the Gold cartridge, it *was* still the first edition, meaning that the chanting in the Fire Temple was kept and Ganon's blood was still red. As an aside, the *OTHER* game console that my cousins had that I wanted was the Playstation. I would get that the following June for my 8th birthday, but *THAT'S* a discussion for another day... Eventually, I would get Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64. My mother, brother and I would play the Mario 64 levels throughout the weekends while all four of us would race each other in Mario Kart 64. I still have all the old controllers, games and even console in my room. To say that the games mean a lot would be an understatement. These games were amazing to us having grown up with old 8 and 16 bit sprites. Nostalgia will always lend me to having a soft spot for old games like these with deformed polygonal models and sprites meshing with 2D backdrops (Zelda and Final Fantasy excelled here). Some of my fondest memories were stem from this game in particular. Mind, they're small things like rereading the manual over and over (which I still own!), asking my family and friends how to progress through levels, running around Peach's Castle discovering its secrets and, yes, "L is Real 2401." This, alongside "Mew Under the Truck" was one of my first playground rumors. All that said...I never beat the original game. As a kid, my brother and I had a harder time acclimatizing ourselves to the controls. We did at least manage to get over 50 stars, so we saw every level except the final Bowser stage. We *would* beat the remake on the DS years later as teenagers, oddly enough. Actually, no, not oddly enough. Luigi was *disgustingly* broken in that game! XD Anyways, this game still remains my favorite 3D Mario game. Unfortunately, this has more to do with the fact that I wasn't the biggest fan of Sunshine and having never played the Galaxy games. I only played like...5 minutes of Galaxy. My backlog, sadly, is massive. Hell, I only had a chance to play less than an hour of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth since I got the game at launch. I've been busy. What was the point of this ramble? Well, just one: this game is special. No matter how old this game gets, I will always love this game for being one of the greatest games I ever played! Oh, and before I forget, yes, I was one of many kids that was afraid of Unagi the first go-around. The graphics honestly made him looked unhinged to me. I *would* eventually lose my fear of him...if only because I would then experience the *TRUE* horror that was Ocarina of Time's Bottom of the Well...

The hate that people have for the N64's controller is wild to me. Different strokes, i guess. I do get why some people would be turned off by it, but it will always be an S-tier controller imo. I've always found it super comfortable, the optical sensor for analog control is drift proof, the form factor is iconic, and the only parts that ever really poop put are the easily replaceable bowl, gear sets, and the thumbstick itself. And those are dirt cheap. Around $5 total and a few minutes is all it takes to restore a loose stick back to perfection. Plus, its weird trident shape is just plain fun. Even now, as an adult well into my 30s, just picking it up makes me smile.

Even after all these years and many many many great games to come out since 1996. his game remains in my top 5 of all time. It's timeless and the levels and structure is so good. Yeah the camera isnt always the best but i grade games based on the year they came out not based on 2024 standards. This game was absolutely magical at the time coming from the 2d platformers of the snes. Blew my mind and its still fun as hell to play to this day

I have absolutely no nostalgia for Mario 64. I played it for the first time a few years ago when I bought it off of the Wii U eshop. I played it for a little while but I got bored of it after like 2 days and deleted it. I didn’t understand why people liked it so much because in all honesty, it really hasn’t aged quite well. I feel like a lot of it does have to do with nostalgia that I don’t have for it but even if I’m not that big of a fan of the game I do definitely respect it because It had a big impact on the gaming industry and it is one of the most important games ever made

I think it's still one of the most enjoyable games to me, I like the graphics too a lot cuz it has a type of charm imo, even Bowser looks scarier with this model which I love, the movements are satisfying, Peach's Castle is one of my favorite main hub areas, the music is so good, kinda rivals Galaxy's music imo, the worlds are fun to go through, it has good difficulty, and it has one of my favorite final Bowser boss battle and ending. I didn't grow up with this game either, but since the first time I played it, I still come back to it and really enjoy it to this day! The camera controls isn't perfect, but I'll give it a pass for this game cuz it was the first game that gives you control over the camera. Now I respect your opinion, but I still find fun and enjoyment out of this game. I don't think it age THAT poorly, since there's still people, nostalgic or not, still enjoys and plays today like me.

i could never get into this game. it looked like ass compared to the previous 2d mario games and compared to tomb raider 1 that came out like 4 months later. i first played it on the ds - it wasnt too bad but this open exploration kind of stuff didnt sit well with me in a mario environment. years later when playing odyssey i had a blast but still got the mario 64 feeling sometimes that 3d platforming is not for me.
