I think the reason Mario 64 is admired and fond over so much is because of the time it came out and was being played. In the late 90s main console games are making a jump to 3D, Pokémon was the new big thing, Smash Bros, Mario Kart 64, and Goldeneye were the main event of after school hangouts and pizza sleepovers. It was a a beautiful time. A time before I had to do multiplication and long division.

@@Choctopus oh I know it’s not a bad game. I’m saying that’s part of its charm or at least that’s how I feel when I play it. I never had an N64 so I would play this at a friend’s house and I think at least a few people can relate to that experience. I honestly like this more than some of the newer ones even it can frustrate me sometimes. I can’t decide between this, World, and Odyssey as my favorite Mario game.

@@Choctopus The PC port really shows to me how much the core design of the game has aged well. The hardware held it back like the graphics, camera, and framerate. At it's core Mario 64 is a timeless experience. Just a shame Nintendo didn't give it the treatment it deserved...

11:55 - It's funny, I had a similar story. As a kid, I only had 119 stars acquired because I was missing the second one from Peach's Secret Slide. There's no indication from the game that there would even *be* an extra star there and so I gave up looking for that last star. I got this game in '96, so I had to wait nearly a decade for GameFAQs to become a thing and find out the hard way where the last star was. I almost threw my keyboard at the screen I was so mad.

Honestly, that makes me miss the days of playground rumors. All these years later I still remember that kid saying how he went down the slide super fast and a second star showed up. Everyone thought he was full of it, only to later learn he was right. Many such cases. These day all the secrets are either datamined from leaked copies before launch, repackaged as DLC, or are flat out not in the game because it's be too hard for people to figure out.

That's actually crazy because that was my last star to get too, I was stuck at 119 for so long and little me just couldn't figure it out. One day I just happened to find it on accident just playing the slide and oh man I had a whole bunch of different emotions going on good times.

i was so scared of the piano as a kid, that I would mentally prepare for it everytime i wanted to go there for stars, and then cry on the spot when it started moving. my mom was mad at me for crying at a video game, and my dad couldn't stop laughing. also had an irrational fear of the urchins in mario galaxy for whatever reason.

Even after 28 years mario 64 is still so iconic and memorable to kids and parents and its really interesting to hear people's stories playing this game. I still play sm64 and even after a very long time im still doing speedruns of this game. For example i have done 16 star speedruns and a 120 star(100%) speedrun. I love this game and all of its legends and the urban legends you were talking about at 14:03 is L is real 2401. It is still one of if not the most popular myth as of now and it basically means that you could unlock Luigi as a playable character but sadly this myth turned out to not be true, however after 24 years and 1 month we found out a model of luigi but you could never actually play as him. I still remember the stories of my dad going to his friend's house to play mario 64 and at the title screen they would goof around with mario's face and nathaniel bandy telling his viewers in the "how sm64 is mind blowing" video he posted he told his fans that even to this day he still loves doing tricks, jumps, and wall jumps all around the castle. Sm64 is still one of the most memorable games to date and i still hope this game never gets unnoticed or forgotten. ❤❤❤

so a couple of fun facts that i've seen so far. 1: the little whomps in Whomp's fortress, you can repeatedly jump on their backs to earn an extra 5 coins before killing them 2: in the sunken ship, you can actually swim to the top of the ship to avoid the annoying platforming and save you a huge headache 3: for the star at the top of the pyramid, as a kid i always just used the wing cap to fly into that little notch and just grab the star. never knew about the platforming up the side until a lot later 4: for red hot log rolling, there's a wing cap in the level that you can use to fly to the star 5: easiest way to beat Big Boo is to just face away from him and just repeatedly ground pound when he gets close

if you Backflip into the entrance of "wet-dry world", you can make the water level start out even higher than the highest level-changing gadget! that makes it a lot easier to reach the friendly bob-omb and unlock the cannon. "Wiggler's red coins"...if you look UP, you can SEE wiggler from there.
