I do love the conceit of a villain frustrated with how stupid his minions are so he makes them smarter. But now they're so intelligent that they realize he is the problem and they join the heroes. I love it.

In a 2007 interview, Hoskins said, "The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Bros. It was a fuckin' nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! Fuckin' nightmare. Fuckin' idiots." He and Leguizamo got drunk before each day of filming and continued to drink between takes. In a 2011 interview, he was asked, "What is the worst job you've done?", "What has been your biggest disappointment?", and "If you could edit your past, what would you change?" His answer to all three was Super Mario Bros. His son, Jack Hoskins, is a fan of the film and praised his performance. Dennis Hopper disparaged the production, recounting in 2008: "It was a nightmare, very honestly, that movie. It was a husband-and-wife directing team who were both control freaks and wouldn't talk before they made decisions. Anyway, I was supposed to go down there for five weeks, and I was there for 17. It was so over budget." He added, "I made a picture called Super Mario Bros., and my six-year-old son at the time - he's now 18 - he said, 'Dad I think you're probably a pretty good actor, but why did you play that terrible guy King Koopa in Super Mario Bros.?' And I said, 'Well Henry, I did that so you could have shoes,' and he said, 'Dad, I don't need shoes that badly.'" Mathis said in 2018 for the film's 25th anniversary: "There are a lot of people who are really excited to meet me because I was Princess Daisy. That's all you can ask for as an actor-that your work, and something you were part of, left an impression on people and makes them feel good." Co-director Morton reflected on the film in 2016 as a "harrowing" experience. Morton felt "very uneasy" being put in the position of having to defend the new script. In addition, working with Dennis Hopper was "really, really hard. Really hard. I don't think [Hopper] had a clue what was going on". He described the experience as humiliating, but was proud of the film's originality. For the film's 20th anniversary, Morton said: "I wanted parents to really get into it. At that time, there was a very hardcore movement against video games, and a lot of anti-video games sentiment. I wanted to make a film that would open it up and get parents interested in video games." Co-director Jankel said, "I do feel in my heart, it was a hell of an achievement to have made it, under those circumstances, and it has in time, happily, achieved cult status I am often hearing how many people loved it growing up, watched it repeatedly, and are genuine fans." Producer Joffé remains proud: "It's not that I defend the movie, it's just that, in its own extraordinary way, it was an interesting and rich artefact and has earned its place. It has strange cult status."He never heard what Yamauchi or Nintendo thought of the finished product. He said, "They never phoned up to complain They were very polite," though Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé said in 2017 that the film "left a really bad taste in the mouth of our developers" and that he had heard "horror stories" about its production from Nintendo employees. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said: "[In] the end, it was a very fun project that they put a lot of effort into The one thing that I still have some regrets about is that the movie may have tried to get a little too close to what the Mario Bros. video games were. And in that sense, it became a movie that was about a video game, rather than being an entertaining movie in and of itself.

In the directors' defense, it sounds like they made it with good intentions rather than another money-grab exploiting a successful franchise. While it won't win any praise from seasoned critics, it'll remain in my childhood memories: a basic-cable flick playing in the background as I fiddled with LEGOs.

The most shocking thing to come out of this reaction for me, is that Eric apparently didn't know Daisy was an actual character, and seems like he believed she was just from this movie to replace the name Peach?
@Rocket1377

Bob Hoskins' Brooklyn accent for Mario "works" for us older millennials because the high-pitched Italian accent from Charles Martinet was still a few years away when we saw this, and Mario from the Super Mario Bros. Supershow was likewise treated with a gruff, Brooklyn accent by Lou Albano. Plus, for me at least, I think it was also the fact that Hoskins used pretty much the same accent for Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, so it was already a familiar, welcome voice to expect when seeing him onscreen. Threw me for a loop years later when I found out he was British! haha
@akakay0131
@akakay0131 Жыл бұрын
Martinet has actually said he knew nothing about Mario when he auditioned for the part, so it’s possible that because he wasn’t aware of what Mario originally sounded like (i.e the gruff Brooklyn accent), he was able to stand out by doing something entirely different.
@foursidekm
@foursidekm Жыл бұрын
@@akakay0131 martinet was actually told to do a brooklyn accent when he auditioned and when talking about it in an interview he did the more traditional brooklyn accent he was thinking (sounds similar to wario's voice). He decided to go with the cartoonish italian accent because it was more friendly and welcoming. Especially for children

So, you were wondering about the green goo on the floor when they put Koopa into the chair for the de-evolution machine. That is actually from a deleted scene (that is hereon KZbin) where one of the workers was de-evolved into primordial slime. There are other deleted scenes too, a prominent one being Iggy and Spike rapping in the club about Koopa's downfall. I would recommend checking them out. They're pretty cool/fun scenes.

Idk if it's just me but I found this movie unironically really enjoyable. The constant car crashes and explosions, the random fights breaking out everywhere, and the insane world design of the Mushroom kingdom were all really fun to watch. The comedy was honestly really funny too, most of the jokes landed in my opinion. It may not be a "great" movie but it's certainly not anywhere near as bad as some people claim. If you want a truly awful movie, go watch The Room, because this doesn't even come close to that movie's surreal viewing experience.

Really? Calling it fungus instead of mushrooms, having lizard people instead of koopas, having king Koopa turn into a weird T-Rex, having a fungus be the father of the princess, who btw is born from an egg, the many romances of Mario, Luigi's lack of a mustache, the age gape between the brothers, the entire set of Mushroom Kingdom as a dystopian Brooklyn?? And the weirdest and most wrong thing in the movie for you was conceptually merging Peach's and Daisy's character?? What are you smoking? Hahahahaha

I still unironically think this is a good movie, and damn what other people think. I think it even works as a Mario movie, albeit in an alternate universe, not the one we see in the games. Kind of like how D&D has normal Fantasy Realms stuff, and then it's also got gritty and realistic Dark Sun.

Calvin play Super Mario World? Heck yeah. Great platformer that's a big more forgiving than some of the earlier SMB games.

The song is called "drive to work on instinct" sounds very similar to a few 90s films, reminded me of "Babies day out"

There are maybe "weak points" where the dimensions overlap a little? Which would also possibly explain why there is a "Plumber Alert". If the transit points are in the sewers, then who would be most likely to cross over into the other dimension most often?

@@marquis911 why? It's a kids movie I saw and enjoyed it as a kid I've shown it to my kids as well and they like it. If your too ignorant and unable to see the basic intentions of a movie that's your problem.
