Since Bowser's sprite was perfectly fine... I'd imagine the story as if Bowser casted a hex on the Mushroom Kingdom that caused every physical object to become distorted and throw everything into chaos, but he can't even control it himself.

31:02 As I recall, when you're Raccoon Mario, the moment you jump with full P-speed, you have 256 frames (roughly 4.25 seconds) of flight time before your P-meter empties. Even touching the ground in the middle of this time doesn't reset the timer. This is why you felt like you didn't have much flight time: you technically wasted a few seconds of it on the ground!

Okay, so I think they're right, and it's reading sound data as graphical data. Same type of bug that happens around Missingno sometimes in Yellow, but in reverse. As for why the game appears to be fixing itself? I'm guessing that it's the music in the battleship levels - notably the longer silent parts (or at least the overlap from the cannons/flames that cause silence because of the 1-chord limit) are interrupting the sound-to-video glitching, thus causing the game's graphics to revert to their usual form.

It honestly looks a lot like what happens when someone uses the CORRUPT program on an SMB3 ROM. And that's pretty awesome considering this was on console, nothing to do with emulation or ROMs. That was one of the best things ever. Invisible Blocks, they come back to haunt Jon even YEARS after calling it quits on ROMhacks! Damn those invisible blocks! Also this is totally SMB3: Mortal Kombat Edition. Clearly Mario was trying to perform a Fatality on the cartridge while it was being used, and this was the result. Beautiful.

Y'know... Five years later and I realized that this video is more-or-less the perfect example of the game without the smoke and mirrors that the devs used to make it so good and run so well on the NES despite pushing it to its limits. Prime example being while Jon was up in the coin heaven in World 1 with the coin and cloud sprites. For the curious, there's a really good explanation (better than I could ever pull off) in the video of a SMB3 run done at a GDQ one year while it was still kinda small. They had a guy on the couch that knew the NES and the game (I think) inside out and was willing to field questions about the game. I just can't remember which GDQ it was and, let's face it, I'm too lazy to go looking for it.
