I really like the artstyle of the game, it beats SMW any day in my opinion. Same reason I like Kirby's Adventure I think, just very stylish colors. Red and Black Mario looks so sick and the pixelart is very cartoonish, which I like. Sometimes less is more, which not only goes for the art, but also for the level lengths. The levels aren't longer than they need to be, which I find refreshing. The momentum, while it might need a little getting used-to, is really satisfying and the visual variety in this game was revolutionary in its time, lots of world themes, different enemies, and Power-Ups. Even though I grew up on the Wii, I still really love this game. It's full of content, but still really condensed and charming I forgot how shitty the puzzle levels were though, that critique is pretty fair

Considering I'm making something that irons out most of the flaws with this franchise, this whole retrospective is enough to tell me I'm biting off more than I can chew. And also the level design in this game is all over the place by the halfway point.

If you want a harder version, try the Famicom version at some point. This is the original version that came out in Japan in 1988. It has Mario 1’s damage system, where if you get hit with a power up such as a fire flower or raccoon tail, you become regular small Mario instead of Super Mario. It definitely makes it more challenging, and is what the enemies and level were designed with in mind, but it doesn’t do anything for the other issues you had with the game. The multiplayer was changed a bit for Super Mario Advance 4, the GBA port of Mario 3. The Mario Bros. style battle mode is dropped and is its own thing in the regular Mario Bros. GBA port also included. Instead you can swap lives between players like Super Mario World. So that makes it more of a consistent co-op experience in that version at least. Also, the Super Mario All Stars port of Mario 1 changed the multiplayer. In this version control switches when a player clears a level, not just when a player dies. So both players get to play a roughly equal amount. This is always the version I’d recommend for multiplayer (with the fix for the brick glitch in this version) unless you really want a race against each other. I think the anchor would make more sense if it was a more common item you could get from a mushroom house or a Hammer Bros. fight. Its use is that if you get game over, all levels you cleared become uncleared again. So stopping the airship can prevent it from going behind a level you now need to beat again to access it. The only problem is that by time you’re good enough to actually get the anchor, you won’t need it. The best use I can think of for it is in 2 player mode, where a weaker player might be able to use it.

I'm honestly rather confused on your opinion with the art style. Just seems like kind of a weird thing. Like, maybe it isn't super mega impressive or anything, but i don't think it's actively bad. And I'm also curious, if this is an example of a bad art style for mario, which ones do you think are good?

Mario 3 was my favourite Mario game for quite some time... until I played it again, now it's just good. Tho, the tanooki leaf is one of my favourite power-ups. I think the reason why it was my favourite for a while was A: I played it with someone else B:I hadn't really played other mario games

Finally, Someone who also notices the odd controls of this game! I've never really been all that into Mario 3, I actually like Lost Levels more lol I'm super excited for the Mario Land 1 review as it's my favorite Mario game! Mario Land 2 is also awesome and I've been playing it a lot recently!
