Super Mario Bros. Wonder Custom Level - "Spiny Spires"

After taking a semi-unintentional two month break from Super Mario Bros. Wonder modding, I've finally managed to build up the motivation to make another custom level for the game. I'm happy with how "Spiny Spires" has turned out; the level uses a few relatively simple mechanics in a bunch of unique and interesting ways. That does mean the level has ended up being pretty huge, so maybe if I end up releasing it I'll integrate a second checkpoint or something like that.

Always blown away by how good of a level designer you are. Making a level of this length without it starting to feel stale is NOT easy. Gameplay is playful but really clear and it has a super natural difficulty curve. Wish this was in the game fr

Combining pumpkin blocks with spike balls is an idea with so much potential that gets executed on really well, and the way that spinies get mixed in during the later parts of the level is just genius. This is a DAMN well-chosen entity palette.

iirc mario maker was originally made as a dev editor for super mario run so that just made me wonder maybe wonders built off of mm2 nsmbu/3d world themes? never modded any switch stuff myself tho so idk they might be completely different under the hood just your average uninformed internet speculation

@@PikaPhantom_it’s neither, the game will just be made using a matrix with damage systems and things like that. Certain object cause damage and certain objects receive damage. It’s all just interacting with one another at that level. It all works because it all uses the same systems.

True! Wonder's camera system is very different compared to previous 2D Mario games, so it took me a while to fully understand it, but now that I know how to use it I should be able to make levels that feel much more dynamic.

the part where you go above the tree canopy is so simple yet so impactful. love how dynamic the terrain feels and how all the setups are built. this feels like a hidden four-star difficulty level in pipe rock plateau. great job overall!

Possibly your best level thus far. Is it bad that I get even more excited when I see these custom Wonder Flower effects than with the vanilla Wonder Flower effects? It's exciting to see how custom level designers use the existing effects in new ways, and yours did not disappoint.

My #1 complaint with Mario Wonder has always been that the level design didn't take advantage of all the cool ideas as much as it should have, so videos like this make me really really happy to see :) Really showing how much potential this game has even if they were to make a direct sequel

I love this level! All the setups you were able to get out of rolling spike balls and spinning Spiny shells were always surprising (the spiny shell interaction on curves displayed at 1:27 especially took me by surprise). This is a super small nitpick/suggestion, but it would have been especially neat if there was a staircase of pumpkins or something at the end of the section starting at 3:50 that you needed to get to before the spike ball to reach a secret so you couldn't just trivialize the section by jumping over the ball. Still, outstanding and extremely dynamic level!

5:16 RIP that talking flower. Anyway, the savannah music's another one of my favorites from this game. It reminds me of a safari, with whatever instrument plays the main melody. The Wonder music you chose also reminds me of one of those endless tunnel-like sequences, where every circle reveals another circle inside of it, this time with pastel rainbow colors. Of course I think the music slaps, but do you get what I mean with that description?

This is really well done! The only thing I might change is that it seems like the part at 1:11 is a little clunky in terms of timing and speed on the rolling block, since it might not be going fast enough, or it might hit the roof above the pumpkin, or it might land below the pumpkin. I could see getting somewhat stuck there, and becoming frustrated because after figuring out what you have to do in *general*, it demands a certain amount of precision. Giving the player a little more leeway might make that part feel a bit better, and maybe reserving that level of precision for an obstacle later in the course, after the concept has been introduced. Maybe a 10 flower coin? I care so much about that specific point because apart from that, the design on the level is spectacular. It doesn’t get stale, and does a really good job of building up the main mechanic through new twists and interactions.

I appreciate the concern, but it's actually really hard *not* to hit the pumpkin with the spikeball, I only hit it going in the opposite direction at first to simulate how a first-time player might approach the section. The spikeball is programmed in such a way that it'll always go back to a consistent amount of speed, and at that speed it's guaranteed tot hit the pumpkin so long as it's bounced when it rolls going to the left.

I saw the three stars before the level starts. It's a bit subtle, but I saw a glimpse of them by playing this video in slow motion. This level is not 3 stars, this is 4 stars, due to the constant threat of the spike balls and Spinies. Level design's really good, though. 😊

Wait Rimea what if u don’t hit the flower bud that summons the big spikey ball at the part where u ground pound pumpkins and run away from it? (If u don’t know what I mean it’s the blue flower bud where the talking flower says “good luck with this part”)

The hitbox of wonder buds is extremely large, like a 2x2 tile box, meaning it's almost impossible to destroy those pumpkins and go down without touching it.
