It was one of my favorite areas. When I would play sunshine as a kid I would always want to go past the invisible walls in the levels and like onto the rest of the island, and now I can finally do that. Also the music in all those areas is so good omg

In the original game it was weirdly implied that the Yoshi you were riding was actually a painted yoshi that bowser jr made with the paintbrush (hence why water turns him into particles) but i guess the intention was so obscure nobody picked up on it... or maybe they thought bowser jr just smuggled an egg by himself with his sub

Actually, the mission with the Yoshi Egg Koopas specifies the Yoshis are native to Delfino, and the Koopas scared them off as predators. Once you kill the koopas, the Mama Sunflower says maybe the Yoshis will return

This whole expansion is so awesome. The open world feeling changes the game but it's a really welcome addition. Yoshi got the *JUICE!* Also finally getting to play as Luigi is a huge win. Super cool fan expansion!

Super Mario Eclipse appears to be a better alternative to Super Mario Sunburn as a quality of life mod for Super Mario Sunshine. Hopefully they will take you word to heart and use it to continue updating the mod to make it even better.

Concerning the voice line stuff, apparently messing with the game code for voice lines irreprably screws up the game. With even really experienced coders trying to crack it and failing. So they weren't really able to add many lines for piantisimo or luigi.

My major problem with Sunshine was always the progression system, so while this does seem a bit too open I do prefer it. Unfortunately, I'm way too backlogged on games to go back to an improved Sunshine, but it was cool too learn about this mod.

If there is any complaint I have, it's that the new levels, or at least the ones I've played so far (Lighthouse Island, Erto Rock, and Hotel Lacrima) there isn't a story throughline the way there is for (at least part of) the existing levels. Bianco Hills had the repeated boss fights against Petey Piranha, Ricco Harbor had the ink in the water and the blooper infestation, Gelato Beach's first half had the Sand Bird thing, most of Pinna Park dealt with removing threats to patron safety like the artillery canyon on the beachhead or supercharged Ferris Wheel, Sirena Beach has you exercising ghosts up until near the end, Noki Bay's first half has the mystery of the polluted water, and Pianta Village's episodes are tied together by the looming Fluff Festival. There was sense of progression as you went along. I didn't get as much a sense of progression in the new levels, felt more like going from one "do this thing" task to another "do this thing" task. I did enjoy these a great deal, and found the challenges to be quite reasonable, not falling into the trap many fangames fall into where there's no difficulty balancing, it's just that there's no sense of restoration as I go through the new locations, and so I don't get that sense when I take down Shadow Mario in episode 7 that I'm getting to the root of the issue, or the jovial atmosphere episode 8 is supposed to have. It's not bad, but it gives too much of a Super Mario 64 feel when it should have a Super Mario Sunshine feel. That's a lot of words to basically just say "the missions felt less connected and cohesive in the new levels compared to existing ones" but I've still had a good deal of fun with these new levels. I enjoyed the new nozzle abilities, and the ability to swim with Yoshi as long as you haven't eaten any fruit made it so much easier getting to the lily pad minigame. I've just unlocked Il Piantissimo and it's a joy playing as him too. One aspect of the game I really love is the way the environments connect to each other. It would have been so easy to just have them connect together, but those little liminal spaces with their own atmospheres and secrets, the branching pathways, and that soothing theme music just makes Isle Delfino feel that much more real. You can really tell with touches like that that there was a lot of thought and intentionality put into this mod, and pardon the cliche, love. I've only just recently reached the halfway point in terms of Shine count, and have numerous blue coins to hunt down, but it's kept me engaged the whole time.

This is what i felt too, a lot of the main part of sunshine is the sense of, Shadow Mario (Bowser Jr.) is messing with whatever part of the island you are at, up until ep 7 when you defeat him ,then ep 8 being the peaceful restoration part of the level. The new ones are just random generic missions (but are still fun, and by generic i mean in lore concept) but it makes Shadow Mario not really make any sense to be there. That being said I saw a comment on another video of a dev saying this had gotten rushed to be completed so thats probably a good reason why, nevertheless this mod is incredible!

Been plotting a fast casual route so i can clear this game in a day or three... and it involves ignoring the start of the game, taking the train from erto rock to rico station (which gets the train shine out of the way and is faster than swimming out to the rico warp point), run to gelato, and from there take the sea lane to pinna park, all to unlock Yoshi early, so i don't have to revisit any levels from this point on wards. Then do a tour around the island starting there cleaning everything up on the first tour.

for those intimidated by the removal of the z menu and lists of shines and bluecoins collected, retroachievements has support for the game and that will give you achievements for all shines and all blue coins for each stage, super easy to keep track of that way!

I 100% this game last weekend and I’m on my second run already 🤣 to me this is the official version of sunshine. I’ll always love the original but it did feel a bit incomplete with only 7 levels, now it just feels so much more like a full game. The new areas are great, there’s still a couple of bugs here and there (particularly in yoshi’s village) but overall couldn’t be happier. This will be the way I replay the game from now on tho. My one gripe is I wish I could put the title screen back to normal because the original logo is so pretty but that’s about it lol.

There's a lot to like about Eclipse. It's definitely a very thoughtful mod. The original music fits in well with the base game. My favorite part of it was just running through the vanilla game with the new mechanics and the transition areas. It really does feel like a DX version of Sunshine. I personaly didn't really like a lot of the level design in most of it's original stages. I found frustrations with some of it was bland (Ice world), confusing (Pianta Pit needs more landmarks), had a lot of verticality which Sunshine isn't friendly with (Erto, the bubble town), and Vaporwave just gave me a headache. It's not bad, it just really reminds you that it's a fan project, not professionals if you know what I mean. I found I wasn't having much after 180 shines, so I just stopped and don't really care to return to it at this point. I'd still recommend it any Sunshine fan though.

I enjoyed everything the mod had to offer, but one gripe I had was that a lot of the post-game levels did not feel like it belonged in the theme of Sunshine, and most of them felt a tad unfinished (lacking music, npcs, repetitive missions, etc.). Otherwise, I can't wait for more mods to this game!

Have to say, it's not often you see a video game mod that just completely replaces the vanilla experience, but Eclipse might be just that. It's simply Sunshine but better, with lots of interesting new levels and content. Honestly, I kinda wonder if there's any reason to go back to normal Sunshine now, given all the quality of life features and amazing extras. Only thing I'd say could be a tad better would be accessibility of the new levels from Delfino Plaza; it's amazing you can go between levels now and the intermission areas are incredible (like the one with the statue in the review), but it would be neat if there were quick shortcuts to the likes of Hotel Lacrima, Warship Island or Lighthouse Island in Delfino Plaza, like there are for the other existing stages and Erto Rock (and the postgame stages from that hub area). Either way, great review, and it's awesome to see you look at a Mario fan game in one of these videos!

So from someone that's 100%'d everything, here's my takes. Yes, not perfect, but so damn close to perfect that its easy to ignore any critiques and just enjoy the game. Luigi occasionally having Mario voice lines is really my only critique outside of post-game. The post-game levels have some considerable lag issues in a couple of them. The rest are fine. One of the post-game levels is purely hot garbage - "Stand on floating orange blocks and hope you guessed the one that doesn't restart the level" - again, the rest of the post-game stuff is fine and honestly really cool.

I was never an fan of Sunshine. But this game is definitely what the original could've been. Mostly it's the same, but with new levels, content and many QOL improvements. There are an few complaints I have. Like some of the level designs & missions are still as obnoxious & repetitive as it was, you still can't carry all 4 Nozzles and I hate the fact that you have to do all 7 main missions in each main course to get into the final area of the game; Corona Mountain, instead of just collecting the amount of Shine Sprites you only need like with the Power Stars in 64 & Galaxy or Power Moons in Odyssey. Like there's no reason to do all those styff after Bowser Jr. took Peach to Corona Mountain. Why can't the game just tell me I only need this amount of Shine Sprite or at least do one or two main missions in any main course and than have an option to go to Corona Mountain. It's not only tedious, but it makes the game way too handholding for being an open sandbox/collecthon game. Other than that, this is without an doubt the best way to play an version of Sunshine.

I just got hit with the flooded delfino softlock and didn't know what was going on. Will the update erase progress or will i be safe to use the same save?

Good question, I'm not sure. I think the original might be easier for beginners to jump into, but I could be completely wrong as Eclipse does have numerous QOL improvements.

OG first I believe is best, since at least you will know what is old content everyone else is familiar with and what is new that most players won't. The added pathways can sometimes be easy to fall into (which also resets progress in a level, I had to redo a red coin hunt 3 times because of this!). And with how many new levels there are, it can make progression confusing I'd imagine, and much longer to beat the main game. Plus some of the game just feels fan made, you know? I think it's a fantastic improvement in a lot of areas, but it does feel very different to the OG. I would suggest first beating the OG, but don't bother 100%ing it. Just to get what the original was going for. Then when you play this hack, you can see what was changed and added. Since some of the OG stages were modified as well. I also think the original had a very consistent cast of characters with clear progress in their storylines even through multiple levels, but Eclipse has so many, and most being one-offs that it's a lot harder to recognize the ones that appear in multiple levels in the OG or are related to each other. But if none of this seems like a big deal, then go ahead with starting Eclipse.
