Imagine being tasked with game music for a gameboy game and then making something this iconic. The industry today is full of talented people, but the people who made shit like this, with what they had at the time, were pioneers of the field.

Video game composers are so underrated, both the Japanese and also Americans like Jeremy Soule. I don't understand why video game music is seen as a "lower" art than other music

Hearing this, especially world music 3, reminds me of the day I almost decided to end my life, life as a child for me wasn’t easy. We dealt with money issues, health issues and just a lot going on. I remember my parents didn’t have money to buy me the latest game console or anything new, but I remember my dad coming home from work and him handing me a Gameboy and this game. I was 8 years old it was 2008 so this game was already old but I remember just playing it and being so grateful to have a dad like him. I never cared for new stuff but this really was the day that brought me into gaming. Now we’re living a good life and everything is going well.

At first glance, Daisy was a surprising character. Back in the 90s, we had no idea Daisy was different from Peach, but it was the truth. That was, if you weren't living in Japan. We didn't know how to handle her back in the 90s only because we couldn't tell how she was different from Peach in her earlier appearances. Daisy looked too similar to Peach in her earlier appearances, the localizers and gaming journalists didn't know that Daisy and Peach were different characters to begin with until the 21st century.

This music was so legendary- it was the first game I ever played myself as a child. At that time, in 1998, it was already old school technology and my brother left all of his games at home when he went to college. The label art really drew me in like everyone else. It led to my love for Japanese animation and gaming, especially Pokemon, which has by far left the biggest impact on my life period. I also met Veronica Taylor years ago, and visited many Pokemon Centers irl and I have so many other crazy wonderful memories. Super Mario Land made all of that possible, because the next game I played was Pokemon Red when my parents got me a gameboy.

When Daisy first appeared in Super Mario Land, most people were surprised that she was a different character. Her heavy resemblance to Peach in her earlier designs fooled us. During the 90s, we had no idea she was different from Peach because we were very familiar with Peach, and Daisy resembling Peach was what caused people to confuse Daisy for Peach. I'm sorry we caused Daisy to suffer an identity crisis because we knew deep down that Daisy was a different character. We just didn't know how different Daisy was from Peach in her earlier designs and gaming appearances because Peach was well known during that time. I'm happy Daisy appeared in Super Mario Land. It was hard to believe Daisy and Peach were different characters during the 1990s, but it was the truth. I was sad I couldn't play as Daisy during the 1990s because most people were too young to understand Daisy or they weren't convinced that Daisy was a different princess. Back then, we were just too dense to understand Daisy.

Seeing Daisy first appear in this game, I had no idea she was a different character, but I'd knew it was true. At first glance, most people thought that Princess Daisy was a Peach pretender, but they were wrong. Daisy and Peach are different characters. We had to learn this the hard way.

@@Mitsuraga Even so, Daisy will always be Peach's tomboyish semi-clone with a femme-fatale personality. While she got censored for a decade by Nintendo just because she fooled western society for looking too similar to Peach, Nintendo wanted to make a princess who acts as the femme-fatale opposite of Peach. Daisy wasn't remembered as fondly as she is now because she first appeared at a time where uncensored Japanese entertainment was too much for western society to handle. For America anyway, strict rules were in place because it was to keep children safe from content that many moral guardians thought was too dangerous for their age.

What uncensored material are you even talking about? Outside of her one game appearance at the time, Daisy really only showed up in some manga, where her "energetic tomboy" description remained more or less intact, but I wouldn't describe her as a femme fatale archetype at all, and I can't think of anything that really portrayed her that way. Not only that, but it's important to note the team behind Daisy (and Wario, but that's a different topic) was a different group from Mario's usual developers. R&D1 somewhat resented working on a property that was usually handled by EAD, and they wanted to push the limits of what they could change from the usual Mario formula. That's why the environments, enemies, and damsel in distress for Super Mario Land were so different, and why Wario exists at all (again, different conversation). It's not like Nintendo as a broader whole mandated Daisy's existence; she was born out of an inability to break free from the limitations that were set upon the development team. In any case, while I agree that Nintendo may forever see her as little more than an alt-Peach with a tweaked personality, I do not believe that is all she's capable of being. I think she's capable of being utilized so much more meaningfully, and I wish Nintendo would recognize that. Indeed, that was my entire point.

@@Mitsuraga I'm just saying that Daisy, this game, and Sailor Moon pushed the boundaries of how western society couldn't handle Japan being very weird unlike now. When I said Daisy got censored for the 1990s by Nintendo, in terms of video game appearances, she first appeared at a time where many western societies couldn't handle uncensored anime and video games to kids just because it looked too adult and/or violent in the eyes of many moral guardians. Daisy was pretty much a perfect example of when you look too Japanese or weird, it's very hard for international audiences to take you very seriously. When everything from Japan was first brought over to North America and numerous other simple-minded countries, to aim it at little children, normalcy and censorship was the way to go. Sure Nintendo didn't have to be so restrictive on Princess Daisy but she was going to end up like Peach's tomboyish semi-clone either way. When I said uncensored, Japan got away free with weird content in cartoon and video games unlike many other countries. Even so, you got your point across.

I don't see how Daisy relates to your point at all, but even without shoving her into that discussion you're trying to have about the disconnect between Japanese media and Western audiences, I find your take extremely muddled. I get where you're coming from, but your argument is overly simplistic and broad.
