Played this game as a kid and it was one of my favorites. It was so different than anything 7yo me had ever experienced and way way different than anything Mario had done like you mentioned. Absolutely lost it seeing the trailer last year. Could not believe it.

I’ve been playing through the remake and I can definitely see why it’s so highly regarded. I’m so glad that the days of boring/safe Mario appear the be over. It’s so crazy that this happened. NOBODY believed there would ever be a remake since Nintendo and Square BOTH ignored this game’s existence for a long time. Let’s hope that we can get a sequel. If they do ever make a sequel having Luigi be a playable character is mandatory. It would be interesting to see what they’d do with the formula going forward. I’m assuming they’d incorporate the best aspects of Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi into the game. I looked it up and there’s a fair amount of cool mods for the remake on GameBanana. Unfortunately, they’re mostly just rebalances and asset swaps. Just image how cool it would be if some crazy person were to break the back and give us a new game using the original’s mechanics/assets as a base. There’s a lot of cool things that could be done with it.

I know there’s some really cool mods made for Paper Mario 64 and TTYD, I would love to see Mario RPG get that same kind of treatment
