4:18 I’m of the generation of gamers that got to see the release of Super Metroid. Something else I remember from back then is the proliferation of physical strategy guides in magazine racks next to the locked cabinets holding the games. In fact, the official guide for Super Metroid was published by Nintendo of America as part of its Nintendo Power magazine division. Nintendo also ran a game tips hotline that would verbally walk you through games. So yeah, don’t feel bad about using a guide! We had really nice, full color, guide books back there in the 90s!

I was 10 when Super Metroid came out. When that intro started with the creepy music and the dead bodies everywhere, you knew you were in for something different. What this game nails is atmosphere. When you finally see Kraid, who's too big to fit on one screen, the music emphasizes how tiny you really are. Or when you break into the Wrecked Ship, the lights are off, random ghosts appear, and you can hear something menacingly pounding in the distance. Playing that game for the first time is an experience I'll never forget.

Sometimes nostalgia does get the better of older gamers, like with Super Metroid fanboys. Dread is the best 2D Metroid title ever released. Then you have other games that really are better than modern takes, but get hate because they're old. The mindset can go both ways.
@fishyperil2153 Жыл бұрын
What people who are too young often don't understand is that reviewing an old game by comparing it to modern games or modern game mechanics isn't something that makes sense. You can't achieve an understanding of an old game's real value by doing that. When reviewing modern games, comparing them to old ones does make sense because new games are expected to evolve the medium and build on what came before, but doing the opposite only somewhat makes sense if the purpose of the review is to give a score with the idea behind it being "how much would I enjoy this game if it came out today". But if Super Metroid came out today, then there would been no Symphony of the Night, Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge etc. to compare it, because all of them are based on Super Metroid. So as I said, if the purpose of the review is just to give an idea of how enjoyable the game is for modern audiences that didn't play the game but have played similar modern games, then it makes sense. If you're trying to evaluate the game's real worth, then you need to take into account the historical context.

@El-Duderino-His-Dudeness6 ай бұрын
I wish it was easier to explain how simple the wall jump was. I feel like the timing is similar to the long jump in Mario 64. In there you're running, then you crouch, then jump. In super Metroid, when you run and start flipping, you maintain momentum. So you kind of let them momentum do the driving. Then when you touch the wall, you press the opposite direction of that momentum, then jump. It's a 1 2 sequence, which is timed not too dissimilar to Mario 64 long jump. The biggest issue with wall jump, is the same problem as space jump, which is you can take yourself out of a spin jump on accident, and can't get back in it until you restart the jump from the ground. Later 2D Metroids allow you to activate spinning again midair, so that is a huge flaw and leads to a pretty unsatisfying space jump mechanic.
@MagnusZero Жыл бұрын
Even with this being one of my favorite SNES games (and I'm in the generation before yours), I can still understand this perspective and respect it. A lot of old games we grew up with didn't convey their mechanics very well (partly due to hardware limitations, but that's hardly an excuse) and adopted a more trial and error approach, which does not appeal to younger players since tutorials in modern games are superior in just telling you how to do something while eliminating all the guesswork. This was fine back in the day because it was common to spend a copious amount of time on a single game. Thus, it made sense that people like me could play this game without a guide. I know that was my experience at least, since getting a new game wasn't a monthly thing, and once I got something, I'd be sinking my teeth into it for months. Others around my age expressed similar backgrounds. About the only critique I could provide (less to do with this game, but just in general) is that regardless of which generation we hail from, I don't think age should be a factor in how we interact with games. I know some younger folks than me (I kept talking like an old fart, but I'm only 30, lol) that are far more tenacious than I am with games and can pull off some great feats without save states. Many of us who grew up with these old games were your age (or younger) when we played them. So, even though we had more time with the games, the age typically doesn't matter on how patient or persistent the player is. Of course, I'm not saying using save states are bad. They exist for a reason. I feel like anyone of all ages can enjoy the authentic experience of playing these games like they were in front of an old CRT TV if they want to. It's not for everyone, but whether you're 20 years-old or 50 years-old, it's still a valid approach I encourage anyone to try. Either way, generational stuff aside, this was a great review, and it's always nice to see how younger folks feel about the games I enjoyed as a lad myself. I hope you continue to grow!

Nice review! It's def okay having stronger opinions about the game and being from a different gen! As someone who grew with the game, these games were naturally more obtuse with their mechanics and exploration. However, in my experience, what kinda compensated for that was the widespread use of printed guides (awesome collectibles) and/or talking to your friends in person about tricks or secrets that you'd discover. Yes, these are things still done today; what I mean is that you HAD to rely much more on guides and friends convos to find your way sometimes. When it comes to mechanics, I LOVE the smooth controls of Dread. I'd say that, what makes Super special is how memorable it is for its time. Each level's music and mood is very unique, like, people are still remixing the themes and recording covers to this day. As much as I loved Dread's mechanics, I found some of its settings and the soundtrack kinda forgettable. Hey that might just be nostalgia speaking tho.

I love seeing people discover these games for the first time. This was a great review and really fair and honest. One thing to keep in mind when reviewing older games like this is that the Instruction Manual played a huge role back then. They were usually pretty long and very detailed. Also sometimes Nintendo wanted people to buy Nintendo Power Magazine so they put some overly cryptic things in the games. I love playing it still, but I have to use a modern controller with re-mappable buttons. I think that's the biggest setback. If you watch speedrunners run this game you'll see they have to use multiple controller grips and contort their hands in different ways. I hope you give Metroid Fusion a chance.

Cool that you took your time to play this masterpiece. Imagine that we who played the game when we were kids we didn't have the internet and most of us never bought the strategy guide. Super Metroid didn't have a tutorial, guide or in game story to guide you. Old school gaming at it's finest ❤️

Consider also that back in the day, there was no references you could go to for help with any game except maybe one of the game magazines and even then, you had to hope they had an article on that game.

It's always nice to see younger generations take the time to play a classic like this. That in and of itself always gives me a warmth inside. I like your honest thoughts and that you are even honest in your approach to them, coming from the perspective of a "modern gamer", as you say. That's something I can respect. I remember first playing Super Metroid when I was barely even a teenager (possibly the best age to easily learn semi intricate systems much more easily and naturally), and I struggled with wall jumps a little to begin with. This game has such superbly tight control schemes (for the most part) that do not translate well at all to modern iterations, ports, emulators etc... I don't own a Nintendo Switch, but I would imagine your frustration was exacerbated by playing the game on that device. Space jump has always been a bit clunky, but the beauty of this game is you can switch it off after acquiring it and still be good for 99% of the time. If you ever decide to revisit this game - even casually - you could possibly fall in love with it in so many unexpected ways. Given even the most basic of insights, you find it becomes possible to get early access to items, do huge parts of the game in whatever order you wish, and just have fun exploiting the world in wonderful ways. And that doesn't even entail the speedrunning aspect which opens up a pandora's urn of astonishing possibilities. Go down that route and you'll find one of the most wholesome, helpful, encouraging communities I have ever known.

I played and beat Super Metroid when I was 9. And let me tell you, I got obsessed with it back then. It took me like a month to beat and it felt like such a huge game to my child brain! I remember figuring out bomb jumping, crystal flashing and wall jumping all by myself and no other game had that kind of depth (that I knew of). Also, I love aliens and space in general so that helped too. Only "bad" thing about the whole experience was that I had nightmares about mother brain for years- I refused to face her again until I was in highschool or something

Looks like everybody in the comments are adult people that were playing the game in the 90s. I could have played it too in the SNES era, but I didn't, I only played it one year ago so no nostalgia from me, and I can say that I agree with the review. But it is normal that under old games reviews the comments come in majority from old players, current generations of players aren't much interested in retrogaming.
@plugshirt1762 Жыл бұрын
I played it a few weeks ago and there was some clunkiness form being old but for the most part it holds up really well. For the most part SNES games tend to age far better than NES games do though. I’d say it was a great game but not really a masterpiece as while it amazing in atmosphere, exploration, and most aspects the combat is really average for the most part so it feels like it holds it back quite a bit though the progression of power you feel is done very well.
@710blodgett748 ай бұрын
The problem is is when you go from a modern game to something from the past it’s a much different experience. It doesn’t mean that your bad game or just means that it’s hard to get used to mechanics you were already used to.

As an original gamer who grew up with these kind of games in my childhood, it’s not how a player enjoys the game, but the fact itself that they enjoy it for what it is and was. The best advice I can offer for games like this is to finish the main story, learn all the tricks and locations, then play it again and see how much easier the game feels compared to your first playthrough

This is such a cool review. Playing this for the first time not too long ago, I feel your pain on the controls and those ******* wall jumps😂. Great game for sure but far from the best metroid game, at least coming from a more modern perspective. Awesome vid !

I played SM for the first time in 2017. It was the first Metroid game that I actually finished and my first time playing any 2D metroid. I had Metroid Prime 1, 2 and 3 but as a non english speaking 10 year old it was kind of impossible to beat lol. I've always loved retro games and that maybe made me more comfortable with Super Metroid than the average modern gamer playing it 25 years later. I totally get every one of your criticisms, phantoon, the controls, wall jumping, but even with those elements I still loved it, I've grown to love it even more with later playthroughs. Now it's easily one of my top 5 games of all time and easily the best SNES games. It is a masterclass in level design, atmosphere, environmental storytelling and does sooooo many things right for 1994! Glad you played it either way ❤

I’ve beat this game countless times since ‘94, but quality of life features in modern games can really make Super Metroid come off as not aging well to younger gamers. That said, my muscle memory in playing this game makes it a walk in the park.

Makes me think of Super Mario 64. Absolute classic game but controlling the camera in a quick and efficient manor is half the battle to enjoying the game.

One thing is that when Super NES came out, these games came with instruction manuals. Those usually detailed how to do specific things and explained specific enemies or parts of the world.

When i was 11, i bought this game on the wii u eshop and played that first section before the whole world opens up. I got so lost that I looked up a guide and somehow came across a TAS speedrun which I attempted to follow. (This was when you could use the internet browser on the wii u to go on youtube to watch ad free vids lol) I got lost while following it but i still fell in love with the game. I enjoyed it as a kid and I remember the joy I got from beating all the bosses. (beating The Ghost Pirate and Motherbrain are like core memories). I revisit it now like once every year and just fall in love with it even more. I recommend revisiting the game at some point now that you know the general path on where to go!!

I just finished playing this game for the first time today and it's my first metroid game. Excited to jump into more metroid games. Playing this game without guides must be a COMPLETELY different experience. Especially for where you have to drop a bomb in the glass tunnel to unlock that whole area. I would've played the game for years before thinking of even trying that.
@symboltherapper Жыл бұрын
Well we all knew about that because they show her using that bomb in the commercial for the game and the glass cracking , so if you played it in 1995 you most likely were waiting for that moment to drop the bomb

I just wanna say, for future uploads that you end up feeling nervous about, that it’s perfectly fine to feel that way, J. Always expect a bit of controversy in your comment section. That’s just how the internet is, sadly. So far though, by the time I’m writing this, the feedback has been positive, and I feel like that’s due to how you’ve addressed your perspective. We all learn differently and they seem to understand that. With that said though…. I’ve never played this game before. Can you believe that? 😱
@2tailedfox711 Жыл бұрын
Your major gripe with this with the controls is probably because wireless controls on a flat panel tv has a ton of input lag. On a real snes with a crt tv the controls were very precise. While they took some practice and listening to audio cues, they were not what I would describe as clunky. Maybe try it again the old way?

The first time I played this I got stuck in that pit and couldn't figure out the wall jump. Agree on the weird controls

I'm over 30, and the SNES shine spark is still a pain to pull off, but just like with the other tricks, the muscle memory eventually comes. Also, the mock ball is a fun glitch, and the game's hidden ability, the crystal flash, isn't even taught in the game, it's just revealed in the gameplay demonstration which plays when you idle at the main menu. The current speed run world record is around 40 minutes or so, unless I'm mistaken.

I'll never forget getting home from Toys R Us back in 94 and hearing that start up music and intro. I was obsessed with this game for the longest time and still beat it every year or so. So many secrets and game mechanics introduced in this game that really make it a joy to watch speed runners play. I understand why this game would feel out dated or unwelcoming to new players today but for me it's home. The music was so good in this game !

Came from the spawncast, you're a great addition because you add a new point of view. I see you present that in your content as well, great video! I find it interesting to compare your experience with mine. The part that killed was the mandatory press b to run section, which was pretty silly in my opinion. I liked the difficulty and the rest was mostly great (dread is still better though)

As someone who was a kid when this game when it came out and has always been in her Samus fixation phase? Super metroid is a pinnacle game of its time, but some stuff has not aged well. Namely, the physics engine, the selection menu for missiles and power bombs, quality of life aspects such as frequency of save stations and recharge points. Many vocally would deby that Super needs an update, but its been my opinion since Zero Mission that Super desperately needs a similar treatment after three decades. I really appreciate these 100% fresh eye reviews, because they're not through nostalgia glasses and childhood biases. Keep it up, kiddo.
@sanseverything900 Жыл бұрын
Seems like even the devs understood afterwards how difficult pulling off the wall jumps were.. it was massively simplified in future metroid games. With that said, one of the reasons SM is a favorite with speedrunners is because of how mechanically challenging it is to pull off certain tricks. Some tricks are so notoriously difficult to pull off that it can take literally *years* for players to master.

0:52 I also couldn’t get with the original Super Metroid and I ended up playing a hack called Project Base that just made the movement feel a lot tighter, and then it was a really nice experience. 2:10 those were great jumps! I never could get the same-wall wall jump down. 3:44 my favorite ability in SM was hold charge beam then shift to morph ball, which would drop five bombs, and was great for doing this. And I don’t think it’s in any other Metroid. 4:34 I definitely used a guide sometimes, and I came out the same year as Super Metroid…

I'm glad that this is a great example of the overall new gamers of today. Don't get me wrong, I love the modernization of most games today and competitive games as some of the changes to make games more accessible for casual or (bad players) in general is needed. This helps with the overall health and longevity of a game and as long as games are easy to get into and hard to master that's all that matters. To some people execution (things that you and a lot of new/young gamers claim to be hard, like the jumping and the wall jumping timing) makes games better and it separates the top players from the good players especially in competitive fighting games, but that can be overcome by game developers making other aspects of the game hard. It's up to them at the end of day.
