Man, I can't say it enough how happy it makes me that you're back to doing LPs. Obviously TRG and your streams have been a thing for years. And while I love TRG, it's nice to see you do solo videos again, especially since time zones makes me miss nearly all of your streams. I subbed to the channel waaaaaaaay back in the day when you were still uploading Super Mario World ROM hack videos. Those videos shaped a huge part of my life. I barely had any idea how to use a computer but I desperately wanted to play those hacks along with you. Because of you and those videos, I ended up looking up guides online on emulation, patching ROMs, hell I didn't even know what a zip folder was before then. But that moment kick-started my interest in computers and technology in general, and now I'm coming up on a career path change into an IT job. I definitely don't think I'd be in this position in life if not for those videos, so thank you Jon.

If it wasn't for Jon I wouldn't have known that Super Mario ROM hacks were so simple to set up back in the day, as I too was just getting my first extended experiences with the family computer. It couldn't handle cutting edge games at the time but ran ZSNES and Lunar IPS perfectly. Of the ROMs you featured on your channel I still wish I could find 1-Up Clock's Furious Mario and play it. His Koopa Koopa Mob level piqued my interest for playing custom ROMs like nothing else.

I think my favorite part of this LP is you're using the speedrunner terms for the rooms because none of them have 'official' names. Red Tower, Billy Mays, etc. All important to know if you're skimming a speedrunning guide for Super Metroid! Also I love LPs that show the 'intended' route and the 'speedrun' or 'fun' routes and you're knocking this one out of the park.

If you listen to the animals, they're also making sounds/visuals similar to the suit when they jump -- the etecoons chirp as they jump like the spin jump sound; and the Dachora flash blue when at spark speed, blink white/gold because it ducks to get the spark, and shinespark up to the speed booster-broken blocks like Jon showed while trying to get them stuck out of the tutorial hall, and when they're at spark speed and have it stored, they make the same 'energized' sound.

More trivia about name stuf: The name "shine spark" is a reference to the classic 70s mecha anime Getter Robo G, being the strongest attack of the robot Getter Robo Dragon. The resemblance is clear in how it functions with the robot being enveloped in energy and boosting forward to attack enemies in a pretty similar way to samus

Just wanted to add, your question about it being lava or magma, the answer is neither. It's acid according to the lore, hence why heat protection doesn't save you from damage, and why Crocomire "melts" instead of burns.
@runman624
@runman624 3 жыл бұрын
It somewhat depends You're right, that was acid, but acid only counts when there's bubbles The "hot water" you see in upper norfair doesn't hurt you when you have the final armor, yet in lower norfair it will still get you damaged Point is, liquid is weird in this series
@ElectricFortune
@ElectricFortune 3 жыл бұрын
@@runman624 There are two separate types of hot liquid in Super Metroid: Lava and Acid. Lava is the orangier, bubbling sprite found throughout most of upper Norfair, and it's also what fills the entrance to Ridley's head, and as you said the final armor makes you immune to damage from it. Acid is the more yellow, flat surfaced sprite that slowly rises and falls, as seen in Crocomire's room, the Gauntlet in Crateria, and entirety of Lower Norfair, and you take damage in it regardless of your suit upgrade status. They are entirely consistent throughout the game.
@marcoklepsky

I believe Zero Mission basically retconned that acid, and basically makes it out to be the Beta Acid (that you see in Tourian after getting the fully-powered suit).
@scottcameron3030
@scottcameron3030 Жыл бұрын
@@ElectricFortuneVery late response but to add onto this, the acid in Tourian specifically looks like a different color than normal acid, but they literally just overlaid the typical yellow acid over an orange background so that it appears differently than the acid in Lower Norfair, Croc, or in Gauntlet (the room northwest of the ship in Crateria). It makes things a lot more confusing than they really are.

So, funny story about the gauntlet (or at least getting to it): I've recently been REALLY into doing the Super Metroid x Link to the Past crossover randomizer. When I started it, I was super familiar with LttP while only having beaten Super Metroid once prior (though I had played several other metroid games, like Fusion) and not knowing many of the speedrun tricks. At one point, I was SUPER stuck, but I was able to see which items were at the end of the gauntlet area, one of which was the Speed Booster, which would let me make progress. However, I wasn't sure HOW I could make it up to the top of the cliffs where the gauntlet entrance is since I didn't have the space jump or morph ball bombs. I tried wall-jumping, and it FELT possible, but I met with little success. But I'd try coming back to it every so often, and I eventually managed to make the jumps, reach the gauntlet, and get the speed booster to continue the game. It felt soooo good to actually be able to get up there with wall jumps alone.

@BigBoct
@BigBoct 3 жыл бұрын
The quick charge and short charge work because the game handles Samus's speed and the bluesuit effect separately. When running with Run held, your speed steadily increases, but the variable which tracks if the bluesuit effect is active only increments on one specific frame of the running animation. So you tap Run around that magic frame, so you aren't accelerating as often, and you build the variable in a shorter runway.

I really appreciate Jon showing off not only some skips and sequence breaks, but also the "correct and intended" way through the game. After the first episode, I actually decided to play through Super Metroid for the first time (going for 100% as well). Boy, was I confused about how I was supposed to go through Norfair. In no other Let's Play I've seen of this game have I actually seen someone leave Norfair before fighting Crocomire and getting the Grappling Beam. I was confused on how you were suppose to get to Croco, because I thought that you were suppose to get Power Bombs for the first time IN Norfair. Which led me to wonder why the hell the map room was behind a Power Bomb door at the beginning of the area. Despite my terrible skills, I did manage to get Wave Beam out of sequence; so I managed to get through it, but not without really questioning what I was supposed to have done.

Tbh, while a lot of people love Super, I'm very lukewarm towards it. As someone who more or less started with the later games in the series, it's incredibly hard to go back to Super for a number of reasons, a lot of which can kinda be seen in this video. First, the scrolling through items. While switching between Missiles and Super Missiles are fine, adding on the 3rd item can be troublesome and the 4th and eventual 5th make it even worse, especially since the GBA games and SR have you hold down a button and only require you to switch between Missiles and Super Missiles where Power Bombs are only active in Morph Ball and any other items being mapped to other buttons entirely. Another issue is map being not too helpful item wise. It's already bad that its impossible to know what items you haven't already collected, but the fact that some items aren't even on the map makes it even worse. Plus, the map also doesn't show how rooms connect, leading to confusing twists and turns trying to get to a certain spot. While most of this only really effect 100%, I much prefer the more helpful maps of the GBA games and SR. That being said, I still can see why people love Super Metroid and I still have a lot of respect for the title and I think this LP will further my respect for it with all of the tips, tricks, and sequence breaks shown off if this video is anything to go off of.

I just recently finished a 100% playthrough of super metroid redux, which fixes the controls, the map, and makes the x-ray scope bigger and faster, and I'm also in camp lukewarm. It just feels so 5/10 on a first playthrough if you know some but not all of the tricks. Like, not bad enough to be frustrating but not good enough to be excited over. I was feeling disengaged as soon as I finished norfair, but kept going because it wasn't hard enough to really irritate me into stopping. I think some of that boredom comes from getting way too strong in norfair, coupled with an insane over reliance on hiding things in random walls. It really felt like they leaned a little too hard on the x-ray scope to hide stuff, because I swear at least a third are just in the ground or wall in some random room or corridor. Again not awful, just sort of bleh if you're not doing a speed run route and you're used to the gba games.

@@baloonman5 Oh, shit! I didn't even THINK of there maybe being a mod for the controls. I need that. I can only play it on Wii U cuz the extra customization helps tremendously. Otherwise I'm hurting my hands to play it, and the item selecting is annoying. Otherwise, I love this game. Yeah, later games control better, but they lack the other ways that Super perfected the series: the speedrunning, the sequence breaking, and the insane number of hidden abilities that I'm not sure are all known to English speakers.

While Crocomire's death is really gruesome... they technically used the same method to kill Bowser at the end of the FIRST castle in the first New Super Mario Bros. And the bones leftover were then later used during the first castle of World 8 as the debut of Dry Bowser. So I think I'll go out on a limb and say that while both are gruesome, it's ultimately much more surprising that a Mario game did it than when Metroid did it.

While that's true, to in part play "devil's advocate", I'd (still) argue that Crocomire's demise overall is still more surprising since a) its flesh is *shown* melting off while it struggles and is clearly in pain unlike Bowser's "death" and b) it seems more or less an innocent if scary-looking animal that gets horribly screwed over by our otherwise genuinely heroic character. With Bowser, while _Mario_ games are generally far lighter in tone than the _Metroid_ games, Bowser is at least a villain who made conscious decisions that led to his fate as well as later being shown inexplicably recovering from it because of magic that means he never really died in the first place. So Bowser's fate is just a standard tale of a villain getting hoisted by their own petard due to their own villainous actions--hell, Bowser built the lava pits--even before the fact that it was temporary. Meanwhile Crocomire just straight up horribly dies and *permanently* for the "crime" of essentially being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and even "wrong place" is arguable since Samus seems to have stumbled into its home. [/counterargument] (Granted, Crocomire was still screwed alongside almost everything else on that planet since the Space Pirates are assholes, but that's besides the point.)

One note about jumping up to the gauntlet by run-jumping off of that little hill: Getting all the way on top of the cliff does *not* require the high jump, but it DOES require the speed booster. So if for some reason you're attempting it without the speed booster (like in a randomizer), run-jumping will not get you to the gauntlet on it its own. However, if you have the high jump boots, it *will* save you a few wall jumps.

This has been a very satisfying playthrough to watch as your preferred path matches the one I developed on my own as I replayed the game a bunch almost identically, down to the early Wave Beam and sequence breaking past the need to move freely in water. The only major deviations so far have been I did not figure out Mockball on my own so I didn't get the Brinstar Reserve Tank/Super Missiles early, and I usually did beat Kraid before going to Norfair for High-Jump Boots, mostly so that I could do all of Norfair except Lower Norfair in 1 fell swoop. This route is also the route I used to get the best ending in the game while also getting full map completion, so I think you should be good to get the best ending at this pace as well as you substitute map completion for explanation and showing things off. Also, as some other comments have noted, the "1st" demo reel from Part 1 is really the 4th demo reel because it only shows up after completing the game the first time. Thus, the "2nd" demo reel shown in this episode is actually the 1st demo reel from a clean cartridge (or ROM for Wii Shop/NSO/nefarious sources), which helps explain why it's so basic while the demo reel shown last episode showed so many advanced techniques.

59:47 I assume you mean that wall-jumping in general feels different in the GBA games, which is true, but wall-jumping does function differently between Fusion and Zero Mission. In Fusion, a wall-jump sends you flying away from the wall, making it useful only either for one jump or going back and forth. Zero Mission's wall-jumping functions almost identically to this game, aside from feeling smoother and being easier to do. It offers some nice sequence breaking opportunities in that game as well.

Just got done watching this whole episode. One thing that's kinda fresh in my mind because of that final Super Missile pickup that got shown.... I'm wondering, Proton Jon, master of glitches, if you're going to show off the Death Beam and Ghetto New Game+ glitch, at the start of the next episode. Because that Shine Spark room in the Mother Brain escape shaft is the best place to do so. And since it hasn't been mentioned yet, what about arm pumping? Gotta save those 1 extra frames of animation!

A minor correction at around 46 minutes in - at least in the randomizer, the Larva enemies drop power bombs ammo, not super ammo. Power bombs are also mondo useful in the randomizer, since uh...the randomizer likes to put the morph ball's bombs any and everywhere. I had a seed where the morph ball bombs were in Maridia IIRC...

But for real this is like, the perfect comfy series form you, Jon. That and the Kirby video. 11:30 If we wanna talk about fun experiences in Metroid, this room is the one that taught me out to wall jump. Just because I got really tired of those moving platforms. With how many missiles you get in a Metorid game and how powerful your beam usually gets, I wish that were more things to do with missiles. Like imagine a late game update that lets you shoot just a volley of missles at once, or convert reserve Missiles into Supers. I know Prime 1 had some upgrades that used a bunch of missles at once, and I think it would be cool to see more upgrades like that

I gotta say, Jon... I'm glad you saw the Trippers like little Starship Enterprises, because I thought the exact same thing as a kid. Glad we're both not insane XD One tip I want to mention (I'm pretty sure it works in Super Metroid) is that, if you come out of the spin state while jumping, I think you can get back into it by pressing the jump button again (possibly while holding a direction). If so, it'll help save a wall jump section. And, one final thing that wasn't mentioned is that the Etecoons actually sing the "item discovery" jingle when you meet them.

I always called Rippers “Float Roaches”, and I love that name. I hope you choose to show off the Murder Beam combo! Edit: if you have Plasma before Draygon, like in a randomizer, you can use X-Ray to microwave Draygon to death.

I believe that trick works against any boss that is hurt by the (Charged) Plasma Beam. Most cases I’ve heard are Golden Torizo and Ridley proper.
@ghostofriddles3409

So an update (seeing as though I'm extremely late on actually watching this, as per usual) is that the "microwaving" actually requires the beam to be able to pass through the enemy in question, making Ridley immune to it since the beam can't go through him in any capacity even if he takes damage

Thank you very much for explaining one of the few things I'd never managed to learn from watching speedruns of this game: _what the hell the intended sequence after High Jump was supposed to be._ Somehow I just could not, for the life of me, grasp that the Crocomire Power Bomb tank was not the "alpha" Power Bombs, that there was another tank that didn't require you to already have Power Bombs to reach it, or that the Crocomire Power Bombs are "locked" behind Grapple which is itself locked behind Power Bomb access. Looking forward to next week when I'll finally get to learn which Maridia entrance is the one you're meant to take.

For the trick at 25:55, I never knew you could just jump up there haha. The way I always did it was to lure the respawning bugs up high by jumping when they start to rise, and then freezing them so they BECOME your platform. But running a little and jumping is way easier
