With Metroid Dread coming out soon, now seemed like a good time to visit the game that got me interested in Metroidvanias in the first place. We're going to attempt to teach some speedrunning tricks in the game, while also showing new players the intended ways to do things, so there should be something here for everyone!
Interested in learning Super Metroid speedrun tricks? Here's some great resources:

Fun trivia about the body found right before facing off Kraid. While it is never confirmed who that is, the sprite does heavily resemble Weavel from Metroid Prime Hunters for the DS. Weavil is a Space Pirate who, after being beaten by Samus during the events of Zero Mission, was reconstructed into a fully mechanical body (safe for his brain and spinal cord) similar to Meta Ridley. His mechanical body is completely grey with an orange visor covering his entire face. If it indeed is Weavel, I wonder what, or who killed him?

Regarding the Zebes pronunciation, the first instance of its name being said (to my knowledge) is a monologue hidden in the files of Metroid Prime; it was intended for the game's opening cutscene but was ultimately cut. As far as non-cut content goes, the earliest instance I'm aware of is the music track "Opening / Menu (Metroid Prime)" in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It includes a monologue from a deep-voiced narrator at the beginning of the track that's more or less an abridged version of Prime's cut monologue.

Like most debated video game pronunciations, the answer lies in the original Japanese. Japanese doesn't have the "e-consonant-e = Long E" pattern such as in the word "genes" ぜべす can be transliterated as ze-be-th or ze-be-su, which makes the pronunciation a bit more obvious. Kinda hard to pronounce zebeth as "zeebth"

47:05 Oh, the grasshopper can be killed with a missile aimed straight upward if you don't want to take the time to morph and bomb. 1:00:53 I think the Varia was supposed to be "Barrier" since it provides a barrier against heat. It wound up being mistranslated, but people enjoyed the sound of Varia since it sounds like some sci-fi name rather than just a bland word, so they kept it in later games.

1:00:55 With the varia suit pronunciation, I believe it's supposed to be called the "vair-ee-ah" suit since "varia" was actually a mistranslation of "barrier" suit back in Metroid 1. However, they never ended up changing it back in later games, probably because it sounds too fucking sick.
@betasprite4239
@betasprite4239 3 жыл бұрын
The Japanese characters used are "ba-ri-a", with short 'a' sounds for the 'a' and long 'e' sounds for the 'i'. So, it's not like the English's long 'a' in "barrier", it's like the 'a' in "wander".

Think of how cool it is that the opening scene with Ridley they bothered to make it so you can "win". Rather than just making a "supposed to die/lose" like most games seem to do. And honestly that goes with a lot of the bosses in this game and how there's different reactions to what you do (like chozo statue dodging missiles)
@megaplays2748
@megaplays2748 3 жыл бұрын
If I recall, Varia was actually originally a mistranslation of the japanese word for barrier, meaning that it's original name was the Barrier Suit, as its original purpose in Metroid was that it increases Samus's defense, therefore becoming a "barrier." This is even shown in the Metroid II manual as the suit is referred to as the Barrier Suit. It is, however, referred to as just the Varia Suit starting in Super Metroid. So I pronounce Varia like barrier or "baria"
@reijigamer
@reijigamer 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct that Varia was a mistranslation of Barrier so Varia should sound closer to barrier

I pronounce it like "Variable" which happens to be pretty close to this
@Kazmahu
@Kazmahu 3 жыл бұрын
This checks out, since IIRC, the English manual for Metroid called the first item the "Maru Mari". This literally means "circle ball" and if you were, say, an office drone given an NES manual and the ROM's worth of text strings to translate without context you wouldn't know what that was supposed to mean, so it was left as-is. Later games gave the localization a bit more thought, calling it "Morphing Ball" before settling on the snappy and now-iconic "Morph Ball". Funnily enough, that name is so well-known when the Western-developed Prime games made it to Japan they brought the name over with them (モーフボール, or "mofu boru", about the closest you can get to pronouncing it with Japanese phonics).
@megaplays2748

@@Kazmahu So just like the Varia Suit, we have an iconic item's name all thanks to a botched up English translation

I will admit that while Samus wearing a barrier suit is great, her wearing a Varia Suit sounds like a thing unique to Metroid alone and distinguishes her games from other vaguely Alien-referential or spacefaring games. The same with a Morph Ball, but even more so because calling her famous move “circle ball” is a way to become irrelevant fast.

Idk if you're going to mention it at all, Jon, but the Moonwalk setting is actually very important in speedruns because it allows you to do tricks called moonfall and moondance. While it's faster to take the damage from Ridley in Ceres, there is a category extension called True 100% Completion that requires you to make Ridley drop the metroid. There's yet another speedrun trick that gets you that first E-Tank in old Brinstar. It's called Taco Tank and it's a frame specific wall jump off the right wall. This is a rare situational rando trick, but if you need to check Bomb Torizo, if it has Bomb and you have Speed Booster, you can charge a shinespark in the previous room, then use it to fly out the open door after getting Bomb. Another commentor mentions this, but you can also kill the grasshoppers by aiming up and shooting a missile.

I assume it will be completely different from this. I’ve never been a big fan of Super metroid; the beginning is easily one of the slowest of this genre and it just wasn’t for me. But I think we can all agree this game deserves all the respect. Especially considering how 80% of all indie games are trying to be this. I just hope while everyone is remembering how much they like the series is finally getting a new game people actually BUY dread; instead of the usual metroid trend of people voicing their favorable opinions about how this metroid game does it all, except apparently give them a reason to vote with their wallets and it doesn’t sell well.

Super excited for this series! Great start. You can tell from the way Jon is talking and playing that he *really* likes this game.

I’ve been speedrunning this game for years at this point and I’ve still learned multiple things from this video. Keep up the good work Jon :)

Glad this got reposted quickly. This is a game that I got when I was roughly around 4 years old, and I liked and didn't like it for a good long while. Of course, growing up and learning how to be more efficient with the game, I've come to like it so much more over the years and it has become one of my top favorite games on the SNES. On a sidenote, for the skip mentioned around 46:36 or so, I usually just get rid of those guys with Super Missiles to get THAT item early. Makes doing that jump past the regenerating block _significantly_ easier.

Jon: Wants to show off speedrun strats Also Jon: Backtracks to pick up a single item he doesn't need, in an area he has to revisit later with improved mobility options anyway Moral of the story: Speedrunning is more than just doing cool tricks! Routing is important! Just because you _can_ get something early doesn't mean it wouldn't be faster to pick it up later! (yes I know this isn't a speedrun; I just really like routing)

Haha, I know this isn't going to be an actual speedrun, trust me. I talk and like to explain stuff too much to do it. I just wanna show off strats to people. It also helps people who play randomizers. But yeah, definitely better to wait until it's time for Billy Mays.

I am already loving this series, which isn't surprising. Jon always nails Let's Plays. This will be a perfect companion to what I'm doing. I'm playing through all the Metroid games again in timeline order, including the ones that I haven't actually finished yet (Pinball, Hunters, Federation Force, and Other M) before I play Metroid Dread. I'm currently on the first Prime Game, so I probably won't get to Super Metroid until after several more episodes come out. I might just try to incorporate some of the more difficult tricks into my playthrough. I usually don't do anything fancy aside from the Mockball in that one hallway, and wall jumps throughout. I can't wait to see more from this series.

I can't believe that Jon was recording this while I was celebrating my birthday, hyping myself up for Metroid Dread. Pretty cool if I do say so myself.

Nice timing, I managed to get the best ending (with 100% items too) for the first time a couple days ago, which felt pretty good. Emile's TRG run was actually a major factor in me trying this game and Metroid in general, so it's interesting to see you play this now. Super Metroid can be really fun, especially as you get more power-ups, though something about the controls doesn't feel as intuitive as later games (mainly switching between items, and I remember the default controls feeling awkward as well). That being said, this has the best world design and item progression of any Metroid game in my opinion, so that makes up for it, even if I think I still prefer Fusion overall. This seems like it'll be a fun playthrough. Learned some things (like the fast Kraid kill) that I don't think I knew about before.

You know I'm glad you are doing more Metroidvania games because your Let's Play of Castlevania Aria of Sorrow was the first I have ever watched and is the first Metroidvania game I ever played. And it made me want to play more Metroidvanias.

Your meticulous penchant for information and Super Metroid go hand in hand. This is going to be a fantastic playthrough, I'm sure of it. As someone myself who also grew up with this game, I can't wait to see your spin on it.

@15:20, and @17:05, the Energy in the roof, you can get it there by using a wall-jump on the nearby wall. It is somewhat of a precision jump however.

28:26 You can stand on the edge of the tube, crouch and just shoot repeatedly, the pickups have larger hitboxes than the enemies, so you can just mash and it'll kill the enemy and you'll immediately pick up the item.

Watching you explain the Bomb Spread, reminds me of one thing I *super* like in AM2R which is that the charged Bomb Spread technique would cause you to create a pillar of bombs. Incredibly handy for checking a wall for breakables or a quick mid-range bombjump.

Those grasshopper dudes that latch onto you can also be killed with missiles, though if they're latched on you need to aim up. Can be a lot easier and faster than bombs since they don't take damage when you jump off a bomb.

1:01:00 Varia suit is Engrish mistranslation translation of Barrier. In the Original Metroid's manual, it was listed as the Barrier Suit, but the mistranslation was in the game itself, so they just went with Varia Suit moving forward.

Man I gotta be honest, watching you play through this game so many years later is kinda surreal. I watched your whole playthrough of the boss run, and couldn't have found this playthrough at a better time. I've recently decided to get into Metroid, but have been having difficulty finding Zero Mission fun. Maybe I can play along with this and find a better appreciation, because the story really does interest me. Would like to get into it.

I'm playing through Circle of the Moon with the Castlevania Advance Collection that just released and I've been getting some powerups earlier actually with some good combo of double jump and wall jump. In this one it's a powerup and it's not as broken but you get it quite early compared to the late game ability that make those very easy to get. It was quite rewarding to make some of those jumps. It's nice to see some sequence break in one of the game that started it all.
