Good video; the Neo-Geo ports to SNES were always competent but pedestrian by comparison, lacking the extra pop and gloss the the Neo-Geo games had. As I'm sure your aware a few of these games have improvement hacks to bring out the best in the SNES capabilities. Final Fight has both an arcade colors/restoration hack and a fastrom hack that are compatible with each other. Pit Fighter does have a fastrom hack but I don't really know if it helps the overall product all that much. One game that you didn't cover is Captain Commando, which also has an arcade improvement hack that enhances the SNES game. Super Street Fighter 2 has an MSU version that sets the game to the coveted 3D0 OST, which is very cool. I know that Mortal Kombat has an arcade edition hack that reconciles most of the drawbacks that you mentioned. Other fastrom upgrades include Magic Sword and Combatribes, among many others. Good times for optimized SNES games for sure.

Great video! It was great revisiting these games. It also brings up my biggest gripe with the whole retro games movement over the last decade. New games that are developed are based off of the console versions of games. Which I get, but from someone that was a teen during this era, it's annoying. We already knew then, that we were going to get a sub par version, despite the sticker on the box stating it was ARCADE PERFECT! We understood the hardware limitations, but the marketing always tried to pull the wool over your eyes. This was especially true during the 8 bit era. Some were so bad, that you would just rather save the money and spend $5-10 beating it in the arcade. Many were good as shown in this video. I just wish we had retro games based off of CPS 1/2 or Neo Geo hardware instead of NES and SNES. I also understand that when this generation of developers were young, arcades were long gone. Long story short, imagine if The Messenger was inspired by the arcade version of Ninja Gaiden instead of the NES version.

Speaking as a hard core fan of the game the graphic's, sound and gameplay on the SNES version are all massively superior to the arcade original. The letterboxing is due to the fact the Genesis (Mega Drive) had a similar architecture to arcades so was easy to port arcade games and had a higher resolution so often they were ported to Sega' 16-bit juggernaut first before porting to the SNES which is why you get the letterboxing. The original home version is done in a higher resolution on the competitor's system for a lot of arcade games. SFII was an exception to this because I believe Nintendo had exclusivity for the home release for a year.

I’m enjoying the video so far. I’ll probably have more comments coming, but regarding NBA jam was it really digitized graphics because for years I believed that it was digitized.. but take a close look, are they really?? They look more artificial than anything.
@ArcadeIsMyLife110 ай бұрын
The players heads are but their bodies are regular sprites so Midway could swap heads on the bodies in NBA Jam to save on memory space. They used the same photo technology they used for Mortal Kombat but only scanned the NBA players' heads.

Not a bad SNES conversation of Sunset Riders(and an expensive one at that on the second hand market). But thankfully the Arcade version is on Arcade Archives now. As for Smash TV on SNES, the best home conversation out of all the home consoles and I'm glad they put in that stage select code so I skip to the end since the Arcade version is a slog to get through.

Growing up playing these games both arcade , snes, genesis I can clearly recall how great the arcade would be but how close the Super Nintendo graphics came close it was not as robust but very close. Super Nintendo was the more graphically accurate and impressive when it came to ports then the genesis which sported ugly & graphically inferior ports more often then not. The Sega exclusives like streets of rage and sonic were the best offerings and some games like rocket night adventures and a few other masterpieces. SNES however was superior.
@derekbuckler98884 ай бұрын
A few other masterpieces? What are you blind? Or just biased? Or did you just happen to not notice the superior graphics, and sound in many Sega Genesis games. You know, like Thunder Force 4? Or Gunstar Heroes? Or how about Ranger X? And while i was a huge Sega Genesis fan growing up, over the years I really started to appreciate the Super Nes. But games like Thunder Force would never run on Super Nintendo hardware, or Gunstar Heroes for that matter. Or comparing the Manhattan Project to Turtles in Time, while the Genesis version is good. It doesn't hold a candle to Turtles in Time, but you certainly don't know your facts well enough to make such an outlandish statement. both systems have their strengths, and weaknesses. But you obviously haven't sat down and played the Genesis enough to have any idea what your talking about. I could sit here pointing out a lot more titles than that, but I'm not going to waste time doing it. And considering that I've been gaming since 78', and been collecting since my teens. I know exactly what I'm talking about, you do not my friend

I played the hell out of Street Fighter II on SNES. It was a very good port.
@ArcadeIsMyLife110 ай бұрын
It's a conversion not a port. But it definitely ticked off the SEGA kids that's for sure until they got a version of Street Fighter 2. But I still prefer Street Fighter 2 Turbo SNES over the original SNES one and Super Street Fighter 2 SNES and I'm glad Capcom included that version on the SNES Classic Edition.

Ms Pacman on the SNES was actually a whole lot better; the best I've ever played(once owned this one). UN Squadron is super hard; I have never beaten it, but I have made it to the last level(on AVG DIFF) and the next to the last level is hard enough to the last level. Never played the arcade... But, to me, the secret to UNS is the planes you get; I save to buy the 250K, 350k, and 1M dollar planes. Another tip: Early on and after you beat the tank, forget those free easy money bases; you won't get much money for them; instead, play the Forest level and--as long as you get halfway through--you'll earn a lot money each time(the golden star). Then, when the home screen begins to beep, you'll have to play the 1st plane target. Buy the $250k plane, stock up, and you should be on your way...
@ArcadeIsMyLife110 ай бұрын
While it's not a bad version of Ms Pacman. I'm not a fan of the zoomed in maze that makes it harder to tell where the ghost are and I don't like the new sprites. Personally I rather play Ms. Pacman on Namco Museum PS2 with my SNES controller adapter then this SNES convertion.
@pattrell525710 ай бұрын
@@ArcadeIsMyLife1 I loved that Ms. Pacman and hated to have to sell it. I would have given that game a 15 on a 10 rating scale for the type of game it was. I could really find nothing wrong with it and it wasn't just the many features that it had over the arcade(I never used more than the level skip, speed as the arcade, and traditional maze anyway--I'm a purist). Still, they were there to be used and I could determine no speed issues or lag and it looked great to me...HOWEVER, YOU DO HAVE A RIGHT TO YOUR OWN OPINION.
