@andersonmarlen8801 it's pretty fair: the PCE was released about 2 years before the Genesis, and the PCE-CD add on went to market at the same time as the Genesis in Japan. So it's exactly the same age. It's pretty remarkable how good the PCE was: it's only got an 8-bit cpu!

Things that are worse in SBM: "voice" samples and cut-scene "videos", they are stupid, the skippy's have become hamsters (wtf?), the arena's in multiplayer are dull compared to BM'94, especially the 10 player arena is appaling, the players in multiplayer are dull (no space punk, cop or blimp bomberman), the overall speed of the game is slower, the music is less of an earworm, and there are some enemies that are a real pain in the butt to the point of demanding a rage-quit. And SBM lacks the quintessential Banana monkey boss fight.

While I will always choose the Genesis over the TG-16, NEC/Hudson's 16-bit machine is super sweet. Excellent video! Altered Beast- The Genesis is missing the arm scaling effect when you take a zombie out. The parallax scrolling on the Genesis port is not in the arcade version at all (pretty neat!). Forgotten Worlds- The TG-16 version of Forgotten World's is a CD ROM ROM title. Further, it lacks two player support like the Genesis. Finally, Forgotten Worlds on the TG-16 CD has a ton of flicker and slowdown mid game moving forward. The Ninja Warriors- You can also play as the male robot ninja that wears all black. I love that game in the arcades and Sega CD. Street Fighter II- We Sega fans got hosed big time. There is no viable reason for the game to sound as it did. The CPS-1 cab has so much in common with the Genesis hardware it's insane. The sound chip is almost identical. This is why an indy developer was able to fix both Street Fighter games on the Genesis giving it arcade perfect sound (no joke). They also fixed the in-game colors and it now looks as vibrant as the arcade version and with every background detail on bone stock hardware without slowdown or flicker. If you haven't checked it out you really should. On a side note- Mortal Kombat was also given the fan fix and now the Genesis has an almost arcade perfect port of it as well! Did you know Mortal Kombat was supposed to be a TG-16 exclusive? Unfortunately, NEC/Hudson refused to pay royalties on an untested game especially against Street Fighter and whatever SNK was cooking up. Oops....

Great video overall, but there is no universe where both versions of Lords of Thunder are a tie. The Sega CD version is missing key graphical features, like the water draining, or hiding part of the screen while going under the waterfall. It's just a dirty port of a game clearly designed for the PCE. The challenge level is severely dumbed down. At least it takes an interesting second run at the soundtrack.

Which is your favorite of the entire series on all systems? Have you played the Sharp X68 original Valis 2? That one's my favorite out of the entire series...the atmosphere is really good in that, but all Valis games have that awesome surreal atmosphere. Valis 4 on PC Engine is my favorite of the console games. BTW...if you like Valis that much like I do, you'd love knowing there's another game out there that plays and looks almost exactly like a Valis game..I might even like it MORE than Valis lol...it's called Devil Hunter Yohko on the Megadrive. It's a faster paced game, and feels like it should've been in the arcades. What did you think of the Valis 4 on SNES? It wasn't even a Telenet game...but it was surprisingly cool as heck too.

35:40 The PCE version also completely lacks "Turbo" speed fighting modes which were a selling point in "Hyper Fighting" and were in Genesis SCE as well as in Super Street Fighter II. It boggles my mind how the og PCE fanatics prop up the PCE version of SF2 while neglecting the more original fighting games on the PCE CD.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using emulation to compare retro systems but if you're going to do so you ought at least to configure your emulators properly. Whatever scaling mode you selected in your TG16 emulator is absolutely ruining the graphics with its blocky, blurry attempt at upscaling. And I'm saying this as a kid who grew up believing Genesis really did what Nintendidn't.

I think the controller for the PC Engine/TurboGrafix-16 was a decent contributing factor to how it didn't get much success in the west. People looked at its two button controller and instantly compared it to what Sega were offering with the Genesis. While it later had a six button controller it was already too late because then Sega did as well, and Nintendo set the standard most controllers follow today with the SNES.

The biggest issue is it just wasn't widely available outside Japan, at least in Europe. You had to import it and buy it mail order or in specialist shops. And the PAL TV compatibility was an issue too. An official PAL "TurboGrafx" planned for 1990 was cancelled due to the disappointing North American launch

thats definitely subjective. it completely depends on what type game you preferred...snes SUCKED when it came to sports...or atleast it sucked compared to the genesis as far as sports are concerned. the sega genesis was just better with games that seemed aimed at a more mature audience...cartoony, kid games and action/adventure games tended to be a bit better on snes. both systems had their pros and cons and beat out the other in certain categories. they were both steps ahead of the tg16...they should of brought out the tg16 a couple years earlier (whenever it was released overseas (pc engine))...gave it a heavier push and dang sure gave the controller more than 2 dang buttons...that killed it too. anyways...the oc engine (TG16) definitely had its chance and blew it with marketing,

Valis III is actually the most interesting comparison. There are a lot of differences. Their soundtracks differ, both in terms of rendition and which tracks play on certain stages - of course the Turbografx-CD soundtrack is better in quality but the Genesis version does very well with chiptunes; so it's really a matter of taste. Next, they have some different usages of color, again it's subjective. The Turbografx-CD version has more levels. It also has some more story with I think cutscenes and voice-overs, even if the voice-acting is campy; compared to just some slide-shows and text boxes respectively for the Genesis. The Genesis version in the presentation department has the parallax scrolling. But crucially, the Genesis version came out later and also has some gameplay improvements, small ones but it feels tighter and for this reason it has my pick too. The gameplay/controls improvements for me outweigh the edge the Turbografx-CD version had in presentation and content.

Regarding Street Fighter 2 on the Genesis, I just have 2 additional points. One is that Sega did release a 6 button controller, and I _think_ it became the default pack-in controller eventually. Also, ROM hacks have been released for SF2, to make the colours and sound much closer to the arcade version. I suspect that Capcom made those compromises to squuze the game on to a smaller memory cartridge. Similar hacks exist for the Mortal Kombat games.

the turbografx 16 (pc engine) seemed like about a halfway point in technology/graphics between the nes/master system era and the snes, genesis (mega drive) era...not quiet on par with the true 16 bit systems but definitely a step above the 8 bit era...well, master system wasnt too far behind...

I like Lords of Thunder on PCECD better than SCD. The enemies don't flash when you shoot them in the SCD version and it messes with the experience more than you think it would after having played the PCECD version.
@thedead_end9628
@thedead_end9628 Жыл бұрын
The soundtrack (subjectively) is better on the PCECD. The musicianship is just more raw more real, whereas the SCD version sounds like it was obviously re-recorded, processed and mixed down cleaner - A homage to the original. There's also more synth keyboard presence in the SCD version which I do appreciate. It's like early Symphonic Metal better it was a genre. The SCD version is the first version of LoT I ever played, will always love it, but if ya play the soundtracks back to back, the original PCECD recordings are just more exciting.

While I much prefer the Famicom design, I understand why the NES was designed the way it was, but after the NES home consoles were accepted again and really don’t think it was necessary for the Japanese consoles to be redesigned for the American market after the NES. The PC Engine and Super Famicom had much better designs.

I feel you've been unfair with Prince of Persia Megadrive. You should have compared the PC Engine CD version to the Mega-CD version, which has the same in-game CD musics... and keeps the better graphics from the MD version. About "Panza's Kickboxing" (aka The Kickboxing on PCE-CD) : it's actually the first game in the series, endorsed by André Panza, and released in 1990 for Amiga, Atari ST and PC (MSDOS) then in 1991 for PC-Engine and 1992 for PC-Engine CD. "Best of the Best Championship Karate" is the second game in the series, with 20 additional moves (55 in total) and new training modes, without 'Panza' licence (Loriciels said Panza was asking too much money), released in 1992 for PC (DOS), Amiga, ST, Amstrad CPC, Megadrive, NES, GameBoy, then in 1993 for Megadrive and SNES. André Panza was a French professional "fighter" during the 80's. He won 9 World Champion titles (6 in Kickboxing, 2 in French Boxing, one in Full Contact). He also had 4th dan Judo Black Belt. During his professional career he fought in 114 fights, 109 victories (87 K.O.), 5 defeats. He was nicknamed "Doctor K.O".

Enjoyable video; there are some key differences between Lords of Thunder on the two consoles though. One is that while the music is amazing either way and generally the same compositions, the Sega CD is modestly re-arranged in some parts and the guitar solos are different between the two versions. The Sega CD version is more washed out looking with the Turbo CD being more vivid. Sega CD version is noticeably easier on default setting but I don't mind that as if I feel like a more casual play-through I'll go for that one. I do have a slight lean towards the Turbo CD musical variations but as you alluded to the mix is quieter and in addition the sound effect when collecting currency is very loud, drowning it out even more; this was wisely changed for the Sega CD version. Other sound effects though like the some of the enemies and bosses are superior on the Turbo version. You can't go wrong either way and both are worth playing though more than once, or several times. Also I'm wondering why you pitted Mega Turrican vs. the PC Engine original Turrican when the Genesis also had a port of the original game in this series, which would be the apt comparison.

I thought of another one - Dungeon Explorer. Oh and Exodus, I think that’s right. MUSHA is better in Japanese (Aleate - Full Metal Fighter Elinor). I played it last night. There’s a new stage and the game doesn’t slow down at the gunship. The difficulty curves are better I think. You can’t read him saying “Shut Up Greg!” Unfortunately though. I would have compared Spriggan with Robo Aleste on the Mega CD as they are both medieval themed.
