the genesis has a faster CPU a 7mhz motorola 68k. the graphics chip is less impressive than the Snes tho. only capable of 64 colors on screen or so. devs, back then, had tricks to push the number of color up, but it was limited. the snes had 256 color on screen and was capable of many hardware accelerated effect (the so called mode 7 and transparency effect). the genesis was capable of doing mode 7 style stuff too, but it was done in software, so it's a bit less efficient/slower. And the transparency on the genesis used dithering and a flaw with the system's composite output. the snes has a anemic 3mhz CPU that really bottlenecked the system as a whole. it has a very good graphic chip on the up side. unfortunately it only supported a resolution of 256x224 witch is a downgrade from the 320x224. the snes had a 512x448 resolution mode, but it was very rarely used, because it was only capable of outputting 16 colors. the slower CPU meant slower games, many snes title suffer from slow downs, usually seen in action games. just comparing the genesis version of ghouls and ghost and the super nintendo version of super ghouls and ghost and it's clear the snes struggle a bit when there's too much enemy on screen. the genesis is more powerful, a lot of games on the genesis used the system's CPU power to make fast action games. while the snes has more colors for artist to have fun with. the sound is debatable. they both sound nice.

@@thehomosexualhandyma Actually, the Master System had 64 colors. The Genesis had 5,887 colors. And the SNES had 5,990 colors.
@davidaitken8503
@davidaitken8503 4 жыл бұрын
@@thehomosexualhandyma The CPU did not mean slower games. You can program a character to move as fast or slow as you want regardless of hardware specs. Comparing Ghouls 'n' Ghosts on Genesis and Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts on SNES and concluding that the SNES is slower because Super G 'n' G slows down every once in a while is laughable. Look at the two games. Look at how much more Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is running compared to Ghouls 'n' Ghosts! Animations, character size, on screen colors, layers of scrolling, graphic effects, etc. it's not even close to being a one to one comparison. That's like pointing to some rare bit of slowdown in Sonic the Hedgehog and concluding the NES is more powerful because Super Mario Bros. doesn't slow down at all. The resolution difference between these two systems is possibly the biggest bit of nothing Sega fanboys fuss over. For all intents and purposes, the resolution looked essentially the same on a CRTV back in the day. The sound on the SNES is superior, full stop. It is not debatable. Contrary to popular belief, the SNES had better fast paced action games too.

@@thehomosexualhandyma you're all wrong, the snes had a more sophisticated cpu that, while running slower, could handle more instructions per second than the genesis could. Also, this video shows a lot of 32x stuff which was NOT the genesis but a peripheral you had to pay money for. SNES games were by themselves more capable. And, with enhancement chips like the Super-FX, SNES games could look and play even better without having to by the sega CD peripheral. I will say though, that the 32x games do look better than any SNES game even with an enhancement chip, but, again, was more expensive and had less games for it in the long run. Don't get me wrong, I loved Genesis more than SNES as a child, but Nintendo was able to do more for less in the long-run. Also, Super Nintendo could have run those fast Genesis games if it wanted to, but Genesis got to it first so I doubt Nintendo wanted to copy their game design mantra.

North America release date of the Genesis: August 14 1989. North America release date of the SNES: August 23 1991. The Genesis and the nintendon't commercials are targeted at the NES, NOT the SNES. The SNES wins in terms of power because it had 2 whole extra years of development. I have no idea why the SNES became a bigger selling console than the Genesis, since in reality it came out way too late in that generation.

hectorae86 Most likely because most people already had a NES and simply went the more obvious route of selecting that systems successor then gambling on a new one. Because A: The Genesis was a flop in Japan and the SNES dominated there and B: The SNES was winning by the time 1994 came around with masterpieces being released one by one (after DKC it was basically over) and lastly, Nintendo starting gaining ground because of their big "Play it loud" marketing push.

I'd say it's up to people to judge what they want for themselves. The Genesis is more capable in playing faster paced games, with really clean animations, a crisp resolution, not to mention the multiple layers of parallax scrolling (which made games more realistic). The SNES has a bigger color pallet, and better sound. When it comes to action and fighter games, the Genesis wins because a humongous color pallet isn't needed to set the tone of the area, and the game runs smoothly and with nice resolution. However, the SNES's RPGs really benefit from the sound and color pallets of the SNES. In terms of sound, the Genesis games released around the beginning of the SNES's life paled in comparison to the SNES's sound. However, Genesis games towards the end of their life also had REALLY great soundtracks and also found ways to make games look vibrant even without the SNES's pallet (specifically Ristar).

RAP64 on paper snes was more powerful but could never achieve these things because the hardware was so bottlenecked. Genesis had better resolution, more on screen sprites without slowdown, can calculate more polygons, more flexible software etc. snes just has mode 7 and a higher color palette

On MD/GEN vs SNES sound: The limited audio ram and sample compression (look up bit rate reduction) often limited the quality on SNES, and the lowpass filter was a more severe hit to clarity than the filtering on MD (which isn't generally there in emulation/digital releases either). On the MD side there is also some distortion (called the ladder effect) in the sound, more noticeable when tones fade out, which isn't generally there in emulation and can be reduced by modding the console. Now you could at least partially get around the audio ram limit on snes with dynamic instrument loading (switching out samples during a song), but it wasn't that common from what I've read. Just looking at number of channels is an oversimplification when each of the 8 channels on SNES is more flexible in that you can sample anything, including FM instruments. On MD you have 6 4-op FM channels, one of which can play samples instead of FM (you can switch between them rather quickly in a song but not play them at the same time) but at a lower sample rate and bit rate than on SNES (27 khz, 8-bit max vs 32khz, 16-bit max). Then you have four more in the simple PSG chip from the Master System, but one of them is a noise channel, and if you want to use it fully (it has a full range noise mode and a periodic noise mode which sounds a bit like a saw wave) you have to sacrifice one of the square wave channels while doing it. If not it has only 3 pitches of noise, which is simpler than the noise channel on NES for example. 4-op FM does have some flexibility though in that you can use algorithm 4 to create a two note chord on one channel, which was fairly common in technosoft's and hitoshi sakimoto's soundtracks for example. You can also simulate a chorus effect on one channel with the right instrument settings, although it doesn't sound as good as doing it with 2+ channels. Another FM specific effect is channel 3 mode: For the third FM channel you can control each of the 4 operators separately, either for dissonant percussive sounds, chords, or a 2-op instrument with echo and chorus-like effects on 1 channel. A rarely used FM effect called ssg-eg can change the timbre of an instrument or kind of simulate the reverb effect on snes by rhythmically repeating part of the note and fading it out via an adsr envelope). It can also be used for very basic speech synthesis, or to improve certain percussion sounds. While it is of minor note here, you can create pure/50% square and pure saw waves with FM, as well as get very close to a triangle wave or 12.5% square so the MD is functionally near backwards compatible with earlier PSG chips. Finally there is channel mixing in software allowing for more sample channels on either console. I haven't looked into this too much, but as far as I know it would demand more from the CPU, and generally the quality of each sample was lower when it was used on MD (Skitchin' is a good example). On SNES you have the echo and treble effects that can be applied to any channel (on MD you can simulate these but generally need more than one channel to do it as well), the "surround" effect which essentially sounds like using two channels in stereo with some delay on MD, and pitch modulation which is similar to FM but uses up 2 channels. However, these effects eat up audio ram too so often the most basic settings were used, which at worst could make the music sound like it's being played in something like an underpass or a bathroom. You also have full stereo panning on SNES, while the MD has hard panning (100% left/mid/right) and for the FM and samples only, while the PSG is in mono. But you can simulate full panning with FM using 2 channels and fine volume changes. Of course samples and FM have some other differences - for example you could edit an FM instrument on the fly with almost no size increase of the song while for a SNES sample (as far as I'm aware) you can just change at what point it starts playing and looping, so you need multiple samples for changes in the strumming of a string instrument for example, or gradually different timbres. The modulation effect of FM itself could also produce more complex timbres, changing as a note plays, which would take a lot of room if sampled and used on SNES (or 2 channels when the aforementioned pitch modulation is used). Finally you also never had problems with FM instruments going out of tune when the pitch was changed, while it's fairly common to hear some out of tune notes in SNES music (see for example the Street Fighter 2 games). The PSG squarewaves (and periodic noise) on the other hand goes out of tune at certain octaves, so you need to manually fix that by repitching each out of tune note by hand with an effect. Then there was the Mega CD addon which added both redbook audio support and a MD chip(s)+extra sample channels setup via its Rico chip, but sadly it was too expensive and kind of poorly designed so it wasn't used as much as it could've been.

6:42 The stupid thing about the "Blast Processing" shenanigans was that Sonic *actually was not* the best showcase for the superior processing power of the Genesis, it displayed some of it, sure, but there were other games that definitely pushed the system further. Musha, a classic shmup released in 1990, displayed a beautiful color palette, many animating and scaling sprites on screen at once, multiple parallax screening back-grounds and generally just lots of awesome visual effects that was very cpu intensive overall. A game the vanilla Snes probably couldn't pull off without excess slowdown. From a marketing perspective though, it made sense to go with Sonic instead of something like Musha. It's much easier for a kid or a layman to notice the fast screen scrolling speed than the "amount of scaling sprites and lasers of screen" and "quality of animation" and technical whatnot. Other games that completely pushed Genesis limits were Alien Soldier (

MegaDrive was better than Snes. Other than a small handful of Snes games like Mario, Zelda, TMNT 4, StarFox, Metroid (which is think is boring and overrated as fuck), the Snes really didn’t have as much to offer at all. Sega on the other hand? 4 Sonic games, Streets of Rage trilogy, Toejam & Earl, Rocket Knight Adventures, Gunstar Heroes, Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, Quackshot, Ristar, Busters Hidden Treasure, Revenge of Shinobi, Dynamite Headdy just to name a few! Plus games released for both systems like EarthWorm Jim, Cool Spot, Mickey Mania, Lion King, Sparkster, Aladdin, Jungle Book, Taz-Mania, Toy Story, Animaniacs, Zool, Jurassic Park and more were all either: different superior games than the Snes games with the same name or better versions of the same game with more levels and features, no screen crunch and no load times (looking at you Mickey Mania) and better controls. The Snes version might have sharper colours and “superior” audio but it always sounded off on the Snes, with some tracks and sound effects even missing. MegaDrive just looked and felt right in comparison. It controlled better and like i said there was no screen crunch so the games were more enjoyable. The MegaDrives library is just better and nobody can ever tell me otherwise.

@@metro_5017 The 32X has better processors (the dual SH-2s found also in the Saturn but clocked at 23 MHz instead of 28.6 MHz on the Saturn) and enhanced graphics chips. However the sound system is nearly untouched from the stock Genesis (YM2612 or YM3438 + PSG). The Genesis with the 32x attached is far more powerful than the Genesis alone. It would be total nonsense to sell a device which make the Genesis "less powerful" as you wrote it.

SEGA wasn't all that knew to gaming. They'd been in the game about as long as Nintendo, they just didn't really push their gaming console marketing or get aggressive until the Genesis. They had the SG-1000 or whatever it was called, then moved onto the Master System but before all that SEGA developed games for Arcades that never stopped, they developed for the Atari and they even developed some of there games for the original NES. Really, SEGA had just as much experience in gaming as Nintendo did. Nintendo braved the gaming world by introducing the NES which was a totally new way to play, but SEGA entered and helped push Nintendo to be and do better and a lot of the decisions Nintendo made helped SEGA learn and grow as SEGA typically did the opposite of what Nintendo did, which is perhaps why their Console Wars are so well remembered, because it really was Ying and Yang. Nintendo: "Game Genie? We don't want that, we thrive on consumers getting stuck in games because then they call our hotline and we make money per minute helping them get out of a jam or they subscribed to our magazine." Yup, you watch enough Angry Video Game Nerd, and you see just how tricky and smart Nintendo were with business. They had developers intentionally create "Cryptic" as AVGN calls it gameplay to get you have to get Nintendo Power to figure out how to move on, SEGA didn't do that, they didn't have a magazine of their own until the the Dreamcast, but by then Demo Discs existed so if you wanted to try out games early, you had to buy their magazine. Anyway SEGA "Game Genie? Go for it!" That's how Nintendo and SEGA worked, not like today where Microsoft watches to see what Sony does and then copy them (that's seriously how Microsoft does business. Bill Gates is quoted as quoting Plato who said "A true artist does create he steals" as well as CEO Steve Balmer who is documented as saying around the time Netscape came into play "We'll watch them! We'll watch them and see what they do and when we figure it out we'll do that." That's how Microsoft functions. They don't innovate. They watch the competition and then duplicate what they do THEN! They call it innovation after they've marketed it to the point that that's all you hear so because they talk about it so much, it must've been there idea.) That's todays consoles wars.

The snes had vastly more colors and audio than the genesis, and mostly outshined the genesis in almost every way. However, the genesis had a processor that was twice as fast as the snes, which is why they coined the term “blast processing”. So no, the genesis did not have mostly better tech specs than the snes.

@@Paul-uo1vw Indeed MK2 isn't censored on Genesis, my bad. Street Fighter 2' on Genesis is superior gameplay wise to Turbo on SNES, but SSF2 is far better on SNES. The genesis version really suffers due to color palette and very weak FM rendition of the CPS-2 original. At least the SNES soundtrack is not too far from the original. And I don't really care about the censorship on defeat portraits, doesn't affect the gameplay whatsoever. Personally I love both consoles for their respective games. I really liked Sonic 1,2,3 , Streets of Rage 1 and 2, Gauntlet 4, Outrun, Thunderforce 4, Street fighter 2 SCE and Castlevania Bloodlines on the Genesis (and many more I haven't listed). And I have also really liked Super Mario World, Zelda ALTTP, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VI, Super Castlevania 4, Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong Country 1,2,3 and many more. Well the commercial you are showing doesn't tell the whole story. The SNES just released at that point and the Genesis had already been out for two years. The 32X predates the N64 by two years. I don't know if you have seen Virtua Racing for the Genesis; they also pushed polygons with an added chip inside the cart and it was more powerful than the FX and FX2 that Star Fox and Doom ran off of respectively. It was called the SVP, I believe and was co-designed by Lockheed Martin.

Nintendo did gave us a taste about the future of gaming ,like mode 7,digital syntheses sound,a 6 action button controller,32768 RGB colors to choose from, while their fx chip did gave us a taste for what 3D will bring to us in the future,but it also marketed the base for future compatitors. But saying it's the most biggest unique console battles is disgusting since the snes only, that's right i say only sold 49 mil and the genesis only 30 mil, considering the ps3 & xbox 360 both sold an average 84 mil, considering both systems did had a very very difficuilt start,due it's high price,overheating problems etc,,,

You say SNES brought with Mode7 the future? Remember: The same time SEGA had CDs already and a portable handheld/TV with colors and backlights. SEGA experimented with 32x, building on Saturn and Neptune that time. FX-chip? Come on. Do you know Virtua Racing on SEGA? Let me say: SEGA was a benchmark and Nintendo had 2 years extra to be as good or even better. It's like cars today. Like Mercedes has it first in the S-classe, 10 years later each hothatch has it.
