What Harley forgot to say is that after Mopar saw the SOHC 427 they started developing a DOHC Hemi, and that's when NASCAR put an end to both engine before they could make it to the big oval. Only 2 DOHC Hemi's were made and one was on display at the big Indy trade show this year in Indianapolis.

Dove Engineering bought everything from Ford pertaining to the SOHC 427, lock, stock, and barrel, including all rights. They redesigned the ports, among other improvements, or so I read. The visitor mistakenly called it a dual overhead cam. It wasn’t just made to compete with hemis, it was made to slay them! Rated at 616 hp,@7,000 rpm, with carburetors, on gasoline, it would have brought grandma’s station wagon to life.

The 427 SOHC's Nickname is the Cammer. The timing chain is nearly 7 feet long both cams turned in the same direction. Because of this mechanics learned that they had to advance one cam 4 to 8 degrees more than the other to make up the difference in the chain links slack. The 47 Flathead Mercury engine is 239 ci. But the Lincoln Flathead is where it's at 1949-51 and the 1948-51 F7 and F8 big trucks they were 337 cubic inch.

@billyfromtheusa I dont. I have my grandfathers 55 club sedan he bought brand new . The cammer came out of a estate sale I stumbled across some 15 years ago. I purchased cammer equipped 61 galaxie that had been drag raced in the late 60s and early 70s. The Galaxie was more rust then car by the time I found it. I got it for $3500 and dropped the cammer in my grandpas 55. I honestly had no idea what the value of it was at the time. Although I knew it was worth more then the $3500 asking price for sure. But If I could do it over again I would have fixed the galaxie's rust issues and just left the 55 original. Ive actually not rebuilt it or done anything to it other than oil change and induction clean up and run the devil out of it. Its a bunch of fun and estimated to be in the high 500 to low 600 hp range . Its very healthy and has a bad habit of melting rear tires . Its probably in need of new timing chains and followers. But I will have to find someone with significantly more knowledge than myself to inspect it

They were available as crate engines from Ford. The 4-V (single Holley four barrel) was rated at 616 horsepower. The 8-V ( dual Holleys) was 645 horsepower. I remember when my uncle, who was a Ford Exec., came to pick up my Dad and brother, and myself in a 'new 63 Galaxie, just a nice, big car, to take us all to a ball game. My Dad was a Buick dealer at the time, so there was a bit of a rivalry there, I guess. My uncle was somehow connected with Ford racing at that time, and with the parts division, and he always had some 'prototype' Demo that he drove. I guess it was supposedly for the "testing" or "examination" purposes, (wink wink!), as for the street application and performance features for these new designs, etc. Anyway, he had cars that weren't available to the 'public'. After backing out of our driveway, he looked around at us all, and with a sly grin on his face, he put it in drive and punched it! It only lasted just for a few seconds. But, WOW! That was no "stock" '63 Galaxie, I can tell you. I was only 14 at the time, but my face lit up with a huge smile, and so did my Dad's. I wish I could remember the exact words that were spoken between them, but I'll never forget that moment of exhilaration and surprise. Looking back now, after seeing this video, I'll bet anything that it had that 427 engine in that Galaxie. That was so cool, I can't ever forget that moment of when he hit the accelerator, and those rear tires just lit up on that big Ford. As totally unexpected as it was, that was my Uncle Benny, and his way of showing his big brother up, I guess. This video just helped to bring that memory back to mind, so THANKS!

Ford built roughly 1.000 SOHC 427 engines in 1965 with the intention to run them in NASCAR. None were installed in production vehicles, so NASCAR naturally said no, as it was still somewhat stock car racing in those days. Since NASCAR had let 426 Hemis run in '64, though none had ever been installed in a production vehicle, Ford protested and boycotted for '65, I believe. NASCAR told MoPar at some point that they couldn't run the Hemi, either, till it was available in a stock production car. They, in their turn protested and boycotted, I think their's ended up being in '65 too, but could be wrong about that. MoPar was smart enough to eventaully offer the Hemi in production cars, and could race it. By the way, among the many informational mistakes in the video, one is that Fords had no chance against the Hemi, which the records testify against. In '64, Hemis made the Daytona 500 their playground, but 427 Fords won 49 of 55 total races that year, and took the manufacturer's champinship one of the many times they would during the muscle car years. The old non-cammer 427 would fight MoPar for championships until '69, when the Boss (or Shotgun Hemi) 429 would take over. Since Chevy's 427 wasn't very competitive, FoMoCo and Mopar traded the championship back and forth until about '74, when everything went far from being about stock cars. Cammers ended up being raced by people like "Ohio" George Montgomery, Don Prudhome, Connie Kalitta, MIckey Thompson (his drivers, who dominated '69 TF/FC, were Danny Ongais and Pat Foster), Pete Robinson, "Dyno" Don Nicholson and many others in drag racing. "Sneaky" Pete Robinson, in fact, developed what the Cammer sorely needed; a gear drive for the cams. I don't know or remember if anybody got the rights and kept producing it. Not likely, since there were so few SOHC 427s to begin with, and Ford had dropped the whole program when NASCAR said "no". The cams Ford made for the Cammer were not "nitro" cams. The aftermarket made nitro-specific cams for the TF dragsters and funny cars running Cammers, Crane Cams in particular. You could, however, get a hell of lot besides just nitro suitable cam grinds, and still can. All it takes is money, and for a Cammer 427, it does take a lot.

Not an easy task. I shoe-horned one into a 67 Mustang which needed shock towers removed, front frame rails boxed, independent front suspension conversion, much heavier front spring weight, heavily massaged firewall..... The list goes on.... But, trust and believe, once it's greased up and squeezed in, there's no other powerplant that makes you smile as much.

About 25 years ago there was a Ford performance shop in Santa Fe Springs, Ca. called Ford Power Parts. For several years they hosted a small, low key car show once a year. I worked for a truck dealership just down the street from there and went to the show a few times. One year Jay Leno pulled up with a friend in a Cobra. I don't recall if it was a kit car or not, but he raised the hood and left to see the cars and mingle. That Cobra had a 427 SOHC with 4 Webers on it. Hands down the most bitchen Cobra I've ever seen. Light blue, side pipes, (Halibrand?) magnesium wheels, the works. Sure wish I had a camera with me that day.

Mario Andretti won the Daytona 500 with a 427 SOHC, after the race NASCAR told Carol Shelby not to bring that engine back to any NASCAR events. Back then to run a car in NASCAR there had to be 500 cars equiped with the engine for it to be a stock car.
@randykirchhevel73115 жыл бұрын
The 427 SOCH had too much horse power as well nobody else would be able to keep up.
@amc401nash64 жыл бұрын
This is what I hate about the internet, people posting urban legends with little actual historical merit. Yes Mario did win the 67 Daytona but the car used a conventional 427 FE engine and it was part of the Holman-Moody racing team. Carol Shelby was not involved.

Just call it the "SOCK" motor like the old school hot rodders do, that owned & worked on 'em. Anyone that's been around 'em enough knows the timing trick, because the 7' timing chain. No lag, instant throttle response like it's got a roots blower setting on it.

Single Over Head Cam (SOHC). 6 ft long timing chains. Badass engine. When NASCAR found out it was in development they outlawed it, not wanting an escalating power war between manufacturers. It was never put in a production car. Many of the few that were produced wound up in drag racing (Connie Kalitta's Bounty Hunter comes to mind).

I've seen this video before or at least the footage. That's the third one of them engines that I have seen. One was in a NASCAR prepped Fairlane and the other one was in a 1/4 mile car. Both were in a museum/personal collection back in the mid to late 70's, not sure where it was located, somewhere in the northeast, PA, NY or NJ. My grandfather knew the guy who owned the cars & he took me along to see them, I was like 6 or 7 at the time, if I'm not mistaken. He had pictures of us there with the cars but I don't know what my aunt did with them.
