The Super SD System 3 from TerraOnion allows you to play PC-Engine and TurboGrafx-16 ROMs and CD-ROM images on real hardware, making for one of the most interesting developments in the Optical Disc Emulation scene. But that's not all, let's dig in and see what thing thing can do!
NOTE: As of FIrmware update 1.2, the CD-ROM audio level has been fixed. If you have a unit, be sure to update!

I just saw your random plug of my retro TurboRip, thanks couryc! Nice review video overall for the device! You plugged our Ys IV: Dawn of Ys localization project, also appreciated! It's the only project I'm still proud of (the rest were poisoned by XSEED Games), I plan an update for it eventually...

I emphatically disagree. It's a unique product made by a tiny outfit and *far* cheaper to buy than the equivalent hardware it replicates - and that's before you spend the time / money on necessary mods and recapping it all. It's still a bargain even if current versions may need a little tinkering to get their audio and RGB video optimal - and don't forget that it is a high end product made for a long dead vintage console. Multinational electronics corporations would never in a trillion years green light production of a device like this, a device made for a group of enthusiasts who fully understand that its production will never yield large economies of scale for the manufacturer as well as being a fundamentally risky endevour.
@charvelgtrs
@charvelgtrs 6 жыл бұрын
Its not a high end product if it comes with obvious flaws. If this was $100 I'd be less hard on it, but at $300 it better perform as advertised.

YES! I would love one for my genesis. There's a lot of sega cd games i would love to play. but the OG hardware is far too expensive. Also, too many of the cd drives have hardware issues. Dead motors, dead optical readers, dead components.

@@jeremyjohnson5527 Have you actually watched this channel...? The whole point of this is "Getting the best out of your console and games." For competitive players, and speedrunners, you might be tethered to console for lag reasons, or for competition rules. Everyone here is aware of emulation, yes, but there will never be an emulator completely accurate enough to get Delay, Hardware Quirks, and Speed exactly right on any setup. But hardware, even FPGA clones? Nearly always perfect, minus issues between hardware revisions (TMSS anyone?)

I absolutely love my Mega SD. I was an SNES kid, but my brother and I bought a Genesis model 2 after a summer of yard work to save money. We never had many games for it, maybe 4 total, but it expanded what we could rent from Blockbuster. Then our genesis sat in a box in our parents' house for about 20 years. Then, last summer (2019) I asked my brother if I could have it and he was fine with it, so I took it to my house, bough some component cables from HD Retrovision, and got a Mega SD. It won't be long before I put in more time on that old model 2 than I did as a kid. I have never owned a PC engine. I've never even played a real one. I had one friend as a kid who briefly owned a TurboGrafx 16, but promptly sold it to buy an SNES when that came out. I was well in my 30s the first time I ever played a PC Engine game, and that was on my Japanese Retro Freak clone console that will play PC Engine games off real Hu Cards or an SD Card and output 720p over HDMI. It's compatible with real controllers too, but I don't own any. The glaring flaw with the Retro Freak's PC Engine emulation is that there is absolutely no way to play any CD based games (though it does play the, what? 5? 6? SuperGrafx games). While you can get a full Sega Genesis experience without any of the Sega CD games, the CD titles for the PC Engine are where that console really shined. Arguably, most of the best PC Engine games were on CDs. I can emulate them on my PC, but I'd prefer real hardware. After buying my Mega SD, and enjoying the Sega CD for the first time, I learned about the Super SD System 3. Again, I don't own a PC Engine, but I've seen for sale on Japanese auction sites going for around $60. If I'm going to pay $300 for a Super SD System 3, an extra $60 for a PC Engine is a no brainer. And you're arguably getting a lot more with the Super SD System 3 than with the Mega SD since the CD games are the main draw of the PC Engine library. And that it will work with the HD Retrovision component cables I already bought for my Genesis (and use with my Saturn) makes this a purchase I'm seriously considering making. At the moment of writing this, Terraonion is sold out of Super SD System 3s, but I hope this is temporary. Maybe they are making a new batch that solves those audio and loading issues mentioned in this video.

Ah after I RGB modded, region switch modded, recapped, and jailbar fixxed my Turbo Duo to do everything (coupled with an Krikkz Everdrive for those $$$ Hu cards). If I saw this ahead of time Id be so much more excited. Still...I have an American TG16 that I would like to try this on just for. Voultar put together a quick chip solution to help fix some issues with this and test, so in the near future I will put it through the ringers. Still, excellent video guys as usual and TerraOnion, you're a genius!

But most interesting is that I have all my systems now modify and all RGB modified like snes, turbo duo rx and my nes by kevtris and the win mod. Watching your channel has changed my gaming collection to a whole new level. I've got the framemeister and the hydra 8 selecter. Omg your channel seems to be a god sent on retro gaming makeovers. But!!! I just purchased a Atari jaguar and I'd love to see how to get the best video for it and the 3do and I think I'm completely done. Thank you guys so much!!! I love when people come over and don't know what the framemeister is and when then know even what a scary cable is. I always say my life in gaming" change my life".!!

@greenwoodforrest
@greenwoodforrest 6 жыл бұрын
The Nt Mini's price is mostly due to its fancy aluminum case, not the FPGA. The Super Nt @ $189 USD is a more realistic benchmark for what an FPGA Genesis might cost. CD support is still a huge question mark with any FPGA Genesis remake, though.

Having one for the Sega CD would be amazing. I've been wanting to get a Sega CD for my Genesis, but most listings on eBay always are sold with a Genesis attatched. Even if they are sold as just the CD Unit, they go for a lot. And ripping the ROMs off of a CD isn't too hard. Although getting the BIOS legally is difficult.

Great information and video as usual. This device is cool but PC Engine / SuprGrafx CD ROM emulation is so good across the board (as far as my experience goes - including arcade card games like Saphire) that i'm perfectly happy with that, even on cheap android based devices with HDMI out it works like a dream and there's none of those video noise issues. This is only the view of someone who's not desperate to own PC Engine hardware of course.

Another awesome video - thanks! So, are we all calling it 'Vintage Gaming' now? I guess 'retro gaming' did have kind of a trashy feel to it, 'vintage' kind of classes it up! ;) Regarding the SSS 3 - had my eye on this one for a while, but I'm going to wait for it to land at Stoneage Gamer first. I did that with the NeoSD and had no regrets. It's easier than trying to deal with all of the bank transfer issues Terra Onion has being overseas, and for some reason they don't want to offer a PayPal option to ease the stress for customers. In this particular case waiting was even more beneficial, as they still seem to be ironing out some fairly impactful hardware and firmware issues...

[Coury] Yeah, I kinda made a conscious decision to start referring it to "vintage" instead of "retro" because I felt it was more accurate. Retro is more about new stuff made to look old, and vintage is classy old stuff.

Coury - Fair enough. The way I see it, if you guys decide you want to tweak the name of the scene/hobby, so be it. You've earned that type of clout! Thanks again for all of the excellent and informative videos. I've spent countless hours of free entertainment in front of the computer thanks to the hard work you guys have poured in over the years...

Maxdiypower makes an adapter for the modem to connect modern SATA drives as opposed to old ribbon cable drives. The ps2 subreddit has a tutorial to install FreeHDboot. And KZbin has dozens of tutorials on how to copy ps2 games to the hard drive (in not nearly as good quality as MLIG would do, hint hint.)

PabstOban PS2 you can run images off of a hard drive with Free McBoot. I’ve used SWISS with the GC as well, for loading off of SD card. Only a few games that stream data haven’t worked (that I’ve tried). I have what I think is an ODE bookmarked at home. I’ll check! Edit: it’s WASP and Wode, neither of which are available anymore. Shoot!

I had one of these on my to-buy list for my TG16 as I'm getting everything set up, but decided to go with a recapped RGB modded Duo with an Everdrive instead. Meant I had to go buy CDRs for the first time in years, though.

Have the issues been fixed in the latest revision? I've seen a couple of Reddit threads and message forum threads but none are up to date to November 2019 on the issues. It's really not something I can justify dropping three bills on if it's not super clear.

PabstOban Yeah, 300 bucks is too much..
@PabstOban
@PabstOban 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think $300 is "too much"... I actually think it is about the rooftop of what you could ask for something like this and pay for it that much at "retail"... BUT, if you are going to sell your device for the max amount, it really should deliver a near 100% experience. I get that small outfits like this, and the GDEmu/Rhea/Phoebe don't have large factories and bulk buying power to pump these out in mass to save some cost of production because the demand just isn't there. Not to mention a lot of these outfits are very small teams operating out of basement/garage workstations. While someone out there might gladly (or not so gladly) pay $500-$1000 for a Rhea on eBay, doesn't mean there are 250,000 around the world that want to buy one. BUT... if there were, I'm sure they would be able to sell the Rhea for $75 shipped and still make a respectable profit. Plus, these ODE solutions are evolving... it would suck if they made 250,000 Rhea's and found out there was a flaw that couldn't be fixed with a firmware update, or an enhancement they discovered that required an extra chip... now you have a warehouse filled with inferior product nobody wants. I'm loving this direction in gaming. I love that people are digging out their old CRT's and gaming on actual hardware. It's nice to see something other than console chip&bios being emulated. ODE's are my new favorite thing (along with your Everdrive like solutions).

PabstOban 300 bucks might be okay for rich early adopters, but for most people, a price of $150 would be more appropriate..
@PabstOban

thepsychologistvjdj A lot of the cost has to do with these not being mass produced in Chinese sweat shops. You can save a ton of money if you are producing 50,000 of something instead of 500 on your basement

I declined to pay through that method, and my other option, a bank wire, is a little sketchy imo, but might be my only way to get my hands on this wonderful thing! I wish there was some other way... :(
