are you perhaps listening on speakers in a room without first reflection treatment? If so the first reflections are probably introducing crazy combfiltering at your listening position anyway (and especially in the midrange). If you haven't already tried, maybe see if you can hear it clearer with headphones?

This is much clearer to grasp. The comment you made in the middle sums up the issues really well. Using sounds most people are familiar with like piano/guitar is much easier to hear you "overcook" it so we grasp the effect. That's why I use a guitar to explain how moving filters in an EQ create phase shift similar to a flange/phaser to guitarists. As much as I love abstract digital sound design, without a frame of reference towards the "correct" sound we can't distinguish the new sound. Glad you redid this one! Keep them wonky annoying tunes coming!

The quality of content here is so much better than pretty much anything else I've seen in the youtube mixing space. Pretty much every home studio "Guru" i've seen (even guys selling courses that are promising radio ready mixes or full-time income from mixing) are saying LCR panning, for example, is the best way to mix, without even mentioning the issues with what it does to the mono mix, or that lovely trick you showed in a previous video for making the sense of depth more interesting. Guys will say "you don't need tips and tricks" but man, your tips and tricks are seriously huge and solve some of the biggest problems of mixing.

Thank you Dan! This is a nice and useful tool to have in my toolbox. I really appreciate your videos! I use almost the same trick to make mono sounds stereo for years. Duplicate the sound give it a couple of milliseconds delay and flip the polarity of only the left or right channel. Basically making a side/diverse channel which creates 2 opposite comb filtering effects when mixed with the mid/sum/origanal track. This makes it super stereo. And the best part is your just left with the original signal while listening in mono.

Hi Dan, thanks for the Video and this useful trick. I had a mixing project laying around with a electric guitar which didn't fit in the mix and sounded more like noise. Perfect usecase for a comb filter. While adjusting the delay, I was initially anoyed by reaper for the 10ms step size for the slider, but then I rembered that this is a JS-Plugin and i can fix this myself. So I reprogrammed the delay slider for the range of 0-15ms and set the step size to 0.1ms. What a great DAW.

The effect was dialed in to near perfectipn in the first video.... Boom, more dimension and space and they played really well together. Perhaps people were listening for color changes ...EQ differences.... Rather than listening for dimension or sitting better together in the mix. A lot of time people are looking for that. That's why compression is tricky to learn at first. I still think maybe a lot of people were listening on phone and laptop speakers

I was one of the commentators claiming to not hear the difference because the music was too confusing (still great music!), but it seems I was wrong. I also couldn't hear it this time. I heard an increase in volume, especially in the guitar track, but that's it. When you set it up, so there was no volume change, I couldn't hear any difference. I tried with 3 different headphones and speakers, but I simply don't get it. I will still try to use this concept on my own music, that way I can focus more on what to listen to while I dial it in myself. Then I will comeback to this video and maybe get it. You seem to be very hyped by this effect and I really want to understand why that is :D

Love the music in this and all your videos Dan. Would like to hear more of it in a streaming context. Would be great to have playing while I'm working. By 'separation', I now get what you mean. In the previous video I though you were talking about stereo separation, but what I think you mean is just having each instrument having it's own space sonically, be it either in Mono or in Stereo. The comb filter just helps provide 'space' between the two parts when they are competing for the same musical space be it them playing in the same register or timbrally similar. This trick will work real nice in some of my verse dense mixes. Thanks! Time to go watch the original video again now that I understand where you're going with this trick.
