A little refinement: if you lay the long stick inside the shelter and roll the drop sheet up the other way, it will keep it from rolling outward (into the fire, for example) and you can control it better from inside the shelter.

Thanks Dave for all you do. I wish I could afford your classes and wish you would post a new video 5 days a week because I learn so much from them. But it's cold outside in Ohio and being 58 years old I appreciate a warm house. I used to do a lot of backpacking in the American southwest but now couldn't keep up with the youngsters you teach. I wish I was one of them but it's cold outside and my ego doesn't need that challenge any more. When the body fails, philosophy prevails ;)

Great video. Having operated in very cold climates, your clothing staying dry is very important. After spending a night in a shelter like this your clothing would become damp with sweat. A good addition to this video may be a way to keep warm and dry.

Cool video.. Mors' shelters are really impressive. I always try to think of ways to use a breathable material with this shelter to keep the condensation down.. maybe nylon (not silnylon) walls that breath and are still light weight. I'm sure someone with a sewing machine and seem tape could make something up pretty quickly that was still pretty versatile.

Great job Dave. I spent one of the coldest nights of my life at -30 celcius in a Mors Supershelter lol (-22 farenheit). Didn't have enough compressed material underneath to reduce convection properly. 4 inches can become 2 inches way too easily sometimes.

I have a S.B. A piece of 8 mil and a shelter half, the shelter for extreme cold weather I was taught in the Boy scouts in the 70s and in the marine corps cold weather school in norway works the same way but is comfortable all the way to -16 degrees as I found out.I didnt want to get out in the am. I did though and got my first 10 point atipicle DARK rack and a 163 lb dressed buck thanks Semper Fi

If you've got time it can't hurt to add a few hot rocks from the fire under your leaf bed or down by your feet. Just make sure there's no smoldering embers stuck to the rocks.

One thing worth mentioning: in Mors' design he uses a dome shape on the back wall, which can be done in this version by flying the space blanket a few feet off the ground and allowing the plastic and nylon tarp (which you excluded here) to drape down to the ground. You can also warm it very effectively with a candle lantern, keeping in mind that it was designed after an igloo which would be warmed with a kudlik. Alternatively, as someone else mentioned, you could use hot rocks to do the same thing.

These shelters are awesome. I guess you could face south to get passive heating. Rocks/metal containers could be used as "heat sinks" Clear tape to patch. Having a vent area by the face to get oxygen into the shelter via the bottom is good idea too.

I know these types of emergency shelters in the pathfinder system hold up extremely well in most weather, including rain. However, how much can these shelters take when it comes to ice and rain? Btw I'm ordering a haversack from the pathfinder store this week. I love that website and just wanted to give your webmaster a shout out for doing a great job of maintaining the online store. I found a small linking issue a while back and let them know about it. The issue was resolved immediately. All things pathfinder are a great experience! Thanks

I wonder if there is a way to possibly collect the moisture that may condense on the plastic similar to a solar still to hopefully get some water from your breath back, as well as any that may be in the leaves. If so, I think that could possibly be another advantage (if enough forms that its worth doing) to this shelter. Though, rethinking that, this is a cold weather shelter, and as such there would likely be snow so reusing water from your breath prolly would be pointless XD

when I bike pack, I bring a tarp and some lines to tie my bike such that it is stable and I tarp over my bicycle. LOL I have been working on getting a more efficient system and it turns out that I don't need a treking pole or a branch to be a support beam for my tarp. I can as it turns out use my bike as a suport for the tarp structurcre.
