I do like your testing method, and descriptions. You have a nice way about your videos. And a good method to your testing.

Thank you so much for making this video! You did a fantastic job and this saved me a heck of a lot of time trying to do the testing myself. Well done and thanks again!

That was so nice.Came here to see what should work with my leather shoes that I dyed with food color. They look so pretty. I think the first product used on the blue strip comes closer to that. But I ll look up some other sources too

I've been using Resolene and have been liking it. Take a damp rag, put some on the rag and put it on your piece. Pretty much once you put it on take a clean, dry cloth and wipe it off, buff it to a shine.. You'll never run into dryer, gummed up bubbles on your leather.

Thanks for the tips & demo/ I'm just a cosplayer/propmaker/hobbyist and I've started using leather in my work instead of vinyl. And I've tried both the resolene (which I personally didn't really like) and the Aussie which I like more. But since I'm still new to leather, I've been iffy and cautious with things but I'm glad I came across this!

Have you tried Snow-Proof or Snow-Seal (Bees wax heated finish for waterproofing)? Also tandy carnauba cream seems to be surfacing as many favorite finishes now, typically applied after a coat of neetsfoot oil.

I really like that resolene shine if you can avoid the bubbles. Jim Lindell uses the super shene in his leather finish tutorial on the tandy leather youtube channel. Then he puts a finish on afterwards.

Aussi leather conditioner is mostly petroleum jelly aka Vaseline. Of course there’s some other ingredients in there but I think there is way better out there than putting Vaseline on your leather.

Since this video, I started using Fiebing's Sad Lac and Fiebing's Leather Sheen. It's a spray and adds a great waterproof finish! I'll have to do a new updated video soon!

Great tutorial. I've been really confused with all the different color dyes and finish options. I make laser cut jewelry from leather and could not find a good way to finish my earrings. Thank you.

You're supposed to cut theResolene with water by 50%. It won't look so plastic that way. I've used spray wood varnish to seal in Eco Flo colours and it works pretty well, but doesn't give a nice lustre. I use it for masks that have intricate colouring. But I'm shopping around now for more traditional methods.

The Cat's Meow thanks, I'll try that. I also just picked up a spray sealer conditioner from Tandy Leather and that works really well. Gives a nice finish and dries fast

I stopped using alcohol based dyes, they are just too harsh on the leather. They're OK for items that don't bend like knife sheaths, but for belts and bag flaps they can cause cracking.

Maybe if you used neatsfoot oil first then dye it, the oil should replace some suppleness to the leather and might stop the curving of the leather

Your saddle tan is not a true dye. It is a gel, used to achieve an antique effect. It does not soak in very deep. On the tandy site, it even says that some finishes may pick up a tad of color. If I remember right, antique gel is more of a stain, used to make carving stand out more, and to have that worn leather look. And, with that stain, you do need to coats of resolene, possibly cut 50/50 with water, to get the best coverage and sealing.

Thanks for that video. I seem to always top off my finish with Aussie these days. The water based dyes really need it. Have you ever tried using the Super Shene or others in the Tandy plastic sprayer bottles?
@MadameKsMiscellany

I did but it gunks up the Nozzle and was annoying to clean. I did hear that a pneumatic airbrush works best so I'll try that next

HI, thank you so much for your amazing video, quick question is that we should use the Aussie conditioner BEFORE the top coat?
@MadameKsMiscellany
@MadameKsMiscellany 6 жыл бұрын
Jennifer Dwyer I always use it last. Sometimes it's all I use, especially if I use a Fiebing's dye. If I use a super shene or resolene, use that first then the Aussie

here's a tough question.. I've ordered a custom size messenger bag with no leather finish applied - that way I can pen and ink (mainly waterproof sumi inks) a design to the leather and then seal it myself. Which finish would be safest over the ink designs? I did this 10 years ago on a antique leather covered travel trunk I restored but I've forgotten what I did (

@@MadameKsMiscellany leather sheen in a bottle was the only thing I could get for a while locally, and it's pretty good too. But I've added resolene and tan kote and an airbrush for different uses. Also Aussie is my go-to conditioner, love the stuff.

Thanks! I'll remeber that for future videos! I love aussie as a final conditioner but I've leaned it needs a base sealer like resolene or my favorite now is the leather sheen spray to really be water proof.
