I am 60 and slow.. I used to be able to run maximum 30 miles a week before braking up.. Now I run mostly in Supershoes (Adidas Pro 3, Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro V1, New Balance SC elite V3, Endorphin Pro 3) and I easily run 50 miles per week without any issues. Of course my avarage pace went up as well.

This was a great episode, and I loved hearing yall theorize because it left a lot of good things to consider. I think it would be interesting to hear you talk about the different level of compliance in Superfoams (ZoomX, LS Pro, PWRRun HG and PB, etc) and how certain running forms may benefit from the different levels of compliance

My thought is the super shoe is doing more of the work where in a regular flat where your body has to do more of the work. Using a more hybrid approach where you are training in a regular shoe with a supplement of a super shoe I think the athlete will get a better adaptation in training.

I’m grateful for all your analysis on these shoes and how they can be used as tools in training as well as how different types of athletes could benefit from the shoes. The worst part is the only way we can figure out which shoe works for our specific mechanics is to buy them. So, local running stores should send you their love.

As a runner getting back into the sport after a long layoff, and someone who's surfed the various trends in shoe design, I'm intrigued by the Topo line, and the Cyclone 2. Ran the very first Brooks shoe, the Nike waffle trainer, original Pegasus, the handful of zero-drops, and now the new foams. Age making me be more careful, but still on the road! Enjoying the site greatly.

Appreciate your video's and information. I mainly run for enjoyment, with some performance improvement mixed in over time. I didn't start running until I was 49, so not seeing myself getting into spikes and enjoy a nice cushion running shoe. The Superblast is my "super" shoe, I'm surprised there isn't more competition to it in the marketplace (non-plated), I am hoping maybe the specter 2 will be comparable. Anyway, cheers and great job team

I ran 30:40 and 14:43 on the track back in the early 80's. I always used spikes in 5ks. In 10's, I wore spikes on the softer tracks and flats on the harder ones because the pounding adds up over 25 laps, which made the slight extra weight worthwhile. Traction wasn't really a major issue unless the track was wet. With the far more cushioned modern spikes, I would likely always choose them vs a flat (if I was still 24!).

Excited for the NB More V5 this summer and would love to hear a pod about dual density midsoles and how the placement (paired with each foams characteristics) impacts the shoes holistic ride. For instance, while many dual density setups use a firmer foam on the roadside (peg turbo, mach 4 & 5), shoes like the Endorphin Elite (to the best of my knowledge) use a firmer, more responsive formula of pwrrun HG closer to the foot and that is only looking at dual density midsoles that are sandwich style.

Great thoughts in this episode! I took a break from running from around 2013 to 2022 and coming back into this sport it has been interesting to see all these new shoes and technologies that could have a big impact on how we train. While hard to study, I’m curious about the changes/damage at a tissue level after hard workouts or races in these super racers or super trainers, as well as how these differences may or may not guide how we can adjust our training to accommodate these and prevent injuries. For example, if these shoes allow us to run more, how does the proportion of recovery/easy miles scale? Does it change?

Appreciate your work here. I somehow angered my left knee running on snow and ice in January (not my first winter run rodeo). It’s coming back around after time off and PT. Not sure if you have heard of this before but I swear a pair of heavy running tights with a wind panel set the whole thing off. I’ve dialed back my shoe rotation to just three pairs 😅

Great podcast. I would love to hear opinions on the super shoes with the average masters distance runner (3-5 hour marathon). Are you seeing an increase in injuries in this group due to the carbon plate? More gastroc, achilles, or PF issues? I also agree that without adding a new threshold or coming out of your comfort zone you will not see improvements. What is a good balance for using a standard shoe for most of your training and a super shoe enough to be able to race in it?

Talking about super shoes and training and the effects. I think you answered the question later in the video. It comes down to stimulus and rest. Super shoes allow you to not be as beat up thus your rest should technically be better allowing for greater stimulus. Not matter the paces.

I am excited about the new Nike Pegasus Turbo, and the Adidas Adios Pro 4/Evo C. Really enjoyed this episode and find that spikes versus super shoes is mainly an issue of legality and stability. Would opt for spikes/flats for shorter efforts or when turns are necessary. When running a flat, straight, longer race (10k and beyond) definitely makes sense to go super shoe. I am curious to hear more about the training effects of super shoes. Where is the line of benefit of strength vs. protection when comparing hard workouts in trainers vs. super shoes?
