This was EXACTLY what I was looking for! I am a pretty new knitter and was looking for something quick and simple for some last minute Christmas gifts. I made this hat in 1 evening, working on a 2nd one now. I am also using Malabrigo Rasta. For anyone that wants a smaller hat, I made my ribbing/brim 2.5 inches instead of 3 and my total hat length 7 inches instead of 8 before I started decreasing. It fits PERFECT. Nice and snug and fitted, like it was designed specifically for my small head. For women, I think I will continue to make it this size. Thank you for this video! :)

Could I cast on 45 stitches instead to make it slightly larger? Or does it have to be a specific odd number?

I am using size US 13, 16” circular needles. I believe these might be ChiaoGoo brand. I think as a beginner it is nice to use wood as it isn’t as slippery as metal. Hope that helps!

Hello! What a wonderful tutorial, thank you! Is this pattern sized for an adult? I want to knit the hat for a man, who is quite large and was wondering what the final dimensions are so I can adjust for his measurements. Thank you!!!
@knittingwhimsy3 жыл бұрын
So glad you like! The hat is pretty generously sized - I think it would work for a large head. If you wanted to you could add 4 stitches - but my guess is that would be too big - it’s pretty stretchy. It is also very easy to undo and reknit if you aren’t happy with the size. I hope it works for you & your man!!

Can I make this with size 10 needles?
@knittingwhimsy Жыл бұрын
You can try - the material will be denser and the hat will be smaller - so you might need to adjust and add a few more stitches to your round. If you are using this yarn I would recommend you go ahead and get the larger needles. They will come in handy for lots of things!! For example I am making Christmas stockings now - very similar to knitting a hat! Happy knitting!!

What is the stitch marker for if it’s a joined piece?

Just so you know where the beginning of your round is. That way you know when you have completed a round of increases or a round of decreases. Hope your hat comes out great!!

How do I achieve the stockinette stitch through the hat when I’m just doing the knit stitch? I’m just getting the garter stitch.
@knittingwhimsy4 жыл бұрын
Since you are knitting in the round, when you knit all knit stitches you get stockinette. Looks smooth on front- bumpy on back. If you knit every round - you won’t get garter stitch. Let me know if that makes sense - or if I am misunderstanding what you are doing.
@caleahmarie3654 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. I’m not sure what happened but only the first row stayed joined....... so basically when I finished I had the fist row attached and then the entire back was open. I had 36inch circular needles rather than 16 inch so I don’t know if that made a difference.
@knittingwhimsy4 жыл бұрын
@@caleahmarie365 aaah - you cannot knit this hat with 36” circulars (unless you are doing the Magic Loop technique). You really do need the 16” circulars. If you desperately want to knit and only have 36” needles - you could make a cowl!!
@caleahmarie3654 жыл бұрын
@@knittingwhimsy the hat looked cute from the front 😂 but the back I’ll need to seem. I’m going to order some 16” and try again. After I join at the beginning and cast off that one stitch, do I need to do anything else special as I go or should it work itself staying together?

Is it #6 yarn? I wanted to use thick and quick.
@knittingwhimsy3 жыл бұрын
I am using Malibrigo Rasta. You could definitely use #6 yarn - if you do I would follow their directions for a hat & use size needles they recommend. Most hat patterns are quite similar - you could still use my tutorial for help.

@mariac5942Ай бұрын
1) cast 41 stitches 2) join your two ends by knitting into that first stitch, and casting off our last stich (by lifting the previous one over it!) (so this brings the stitches to 40) 3) put the stitch marker, knit 2 purl 2 until you have about 3 inches. 4) stich one past the stitch marker. Increase row: knit 3 stitches then knit into the front of a stitch, flip the needle around, knit into the back of the stitch. So it's 3knit + 1 front/back 5) you should have 50 stitches in your needles 6) knit all around until you reach 8 inches(full hat's height) 7) decrease row: knit 2 together. From 50 stitches goes to 25 8) second decrease row: knit 2 together and then 3 together. 9) you should have 15 stitches in your needles. Take the yarn tail+ needle and close the hat

After minute 4, I count the stitches and they are 54?!?! It's my first time with circular needles, so I am not even sure how to go back....
@knittingwhimsy3 жыл бұрын
That is always disappointing!! You have a few options - You can ‘frog’ back to a point where you have the correct number of stitches. There is a knitting whimsy video on frogging - not for circular needles, but the process is very similar. It is easy to do with chunky yarn because they loops tend to keep their shape. Or you can throw in 4 evenly spaced ‘knit two togethers’ to get your stitch count back to 50. Or you can rip the whole thing out - start over and consider it extra practice and learning to make the perfect hat! Plus you get to knit more - consider it an added bonus of therapeutic knitting time!! Whatever you do - I hope you enjoy your knitting experience and your hat!!
