I have knitted for most of my life (since I was 10 years old) and the reason I checked out your video is because I have never been able to use circs (long story having to do with being left handed) and i was lookin for a cap knit flat. The reason I am writing this is to say that in my opinion you are one of thee best instructors I have ever watched. If someone is new to knitting . YOU are definitely the go-to person for excellent teaching!! Thanks for ending my search for a great hat (I knit them for homeless folks). Also .... thank you for making knitting so accessible to those who are just starting out. Huge applause to you!!

Try double pointed needles. I and some others like them better than circular needles. That cable is always pulling on my needies. The double pointed needles are a bit awkward and the suddenly they do not feel awkard. But you can do so much knitting with 2 straight needles and seaming the fabric together.
@LifterwiII3 жыл бұрын
@@eastlynburkholder3559 Thanks Eastlyn. The reason I like this pattern is because I prop my right needle in my lap. I wasn''t taught that way 64 years ago, yet somewhere along the way thats how it developed. @@LifterwiII my dad works only one of the knitting needles. I have problems with my joints and amazingly enough I can knit right handed and left handed, so whatever works for you. @eastlynburkholder35593 жыл бұрын
@@LifterwiII yes my dad is left handed. He prefers to crochet and tat rather than knit. I throw the read in an inefficient way but work from the elbow or from the wrist down. Using shoulder movement is more efficient but I do not do that. I knit into the back of the stitches and never purl. This makes twisted stitches and stretched fabric and instead of knitting and pulling from the front side. I knit right handed and left handed. The knitting needles are coming towards each other like the lances when knight's joust. Tgus us inefficient but possible and less painful. I like to make scarves and hats.

To those who are having problems but would love to knit: im a visual learner and i probably tried this about 3 or 4 times before i finally started to calm down (from being frustrated and discouraged) and figure it out. But what helped me most was simply looking up how to do the knit stitch, then purl stitch separately. Then try just doing one row of knit then one of purl (which makes stockingette stitch) as a test swatch to understand how the stitches are made and get your hands and fingers used to the process. I learned to do these stitches contenintal style as i am a crocheter learning to knit. And i also placed stitch markers every 10 stitches (other than one set that had an additional 2 on the end since the pattern is a multiple of 10+2) to help me keep track at the beginning of which is knit and which is purl and to catch mistakes more quickly as there would be 10 stitches after each marker if ive done it correctly. YOU GOT THIS!!🫶🏻😊

I am glad you knit it! Seaming takes a long time to perfect - so don't give up!
@eastlynburkholder35593 жыл бұрын
Casting on was hard for me and seaming was hard for me. My problem was seaming too tightly. Afraid of seaming too loosely I was drawing that seam up so tightly that the seam was very obvious and ugly. I have practiced and it got much improved but until I could do pretty seaming that was almost invisible I used to use variegated yarn and thst helps to hide the seam.
@mimimui113 жыл бұрын
@@eastlynburkholder3559 I had the same problem with my first beanie! I recently made a second one and perfected my seaming by progressively stretching my work as I seamed, thus allowing the seaming yarn to loosen up. It's a lot cleaner and discreet than the first one. I guess we can agree that getting better is the most satisfying thing there is =p
@eastlynburkholder35593 жыл бұрын
@@mimimui11 it took me almost forever to cast on and cast off well and I used to cut yarn and throw away the first 8 rows. And seaming fabric was impossible and then one day it was easy and I could not reason out why it had ever seemed difficult. That is why I say keep trying. Also this basic beanie can be done with a background texture stitch or with stripes as one gets better at the basic pattern.

@@eastlynburkholder3559 that’s reassuring. I’m terrible at sewing up. It spoils it like crazy and yes I cry. In fact I cry many tears. I think it’s because I dread it and I know I’m going to fail, so maybe I should have to hit it head on with with positivity.

I had the same issue because my wool was thicker so I made it smaller. Take two away from your original stick number (for the first and last stitch) which would make it 132. Then divide by however many sections you want divided by the stitch markers (I chose 5 however 5 doesn't go into 132 so you'll have to try a different original number or number to divide by). After that you'll take another 2 of the number you've just divided to make up for the decrease stitches you will do, and that is how many you'll need to do in-between each stitch marker. Hope this helps if you're still going to do it and if my explanation was confusing just reply and I'll try to explain better :)

I thought that I was never going to find a tutorial for the flat knitting sticks. Thank you for the tutorial! This will be really helpful since I only have 1 yarn, I am a beginner.

Hey! So, I decided to take up knitting again, the other week a spent about 3 days on this beanie project and it came out great. However the seeming, I did not get down quite as well as yours. Im still learning gauge and other key factors for knitting. What would a Size 3 yarn translate into ply? Now, in Australia, Ive only really seen wool/yarn go by "Ply". So I used 8 Ply Wool and 3.1/4mm Needles for my beanie. My friends mum also asked me to knit her a beanie, so im planning on using this pattern again, however adding crochet cat ears as we volunteer for CAF.

Also, would using Stockinette work with this pattern? As i would love to do a brim that is Ribbon, however the rest being stockinette. I would love additional info for why or why it would not work

@@TrashyPiles if you change the stitch pattern, the resulting fabric might get stiffer and slightly tighter and smaller OR it might get looser and bigger. Since the hat is knitted flat, ou can hold it up to your head to measure if your stitch pattern is making a wide enough fabric for the size hat you want. I use an all over texture stitch and this works but I have to add 8 % more stitches per row because my all over texture stitch makes a slightly less wide fabric. Having an all over texture stitch helps me hide the seam better. If you know an all over texture stitch already, you can make a second hat with this pattern using the all over texture stitch you already know. 8 % more stitches is about 1/12 th more. Divide the stitches per row by 12 (or 12.5) and then add that many stitches per row. Some one else also mentioned making the hat taller/deeper or shorter/less deep.

Thanks so much for this very comprehensive tutorial! May I ask how much decrease should I do if I've casted 72 stitches?
@KnittingHouseSquare3 жыл бұрын
Hi! For that size the decrease set up row will be: Decrease Set-Up Row: • Knit 1, place a stitch marker • *Knit 1, Purl 1* repeat between * for 12 stitches, SSK, place a stitch marker. Repeat a total of 5 times • Purl 1, turn work Then you will continue decreasing as described in the pattern

Thank you very much, just needed to know, so the beginning and end of each row should have 2 plain and 2 purl .please advice
@KnittingHouseSquare3 жыл бұрын
Yes that is exactly right! Each row starts with 2 knit and ends with 2 purl. Later on when we seam the sides we loose one stitch on either side, so it ends up appearing as 1 knit, 1 purl

Help! How do I know the number of stitches for my size? On the first part I was a bit lost since you didn't show the measurement. Hope you answer this question even it's not part of your video. Thanks
@KnittingHouseSquare3 жыл бұрын
Hi! For the adult size I cast on 112 stitches - it stretches quite a bit to fit up to a 22" circumference head. If you need a larger size, the pattern can be increased in sets of 10 stitches (122, 132, . . .) I hope that helps to clarify!
@donnabaldwin96373 жыл бұрын
@@KnittingHouseSquare Thank you for answering this great question bc I too was a bit confused trying to read/understand the pattern. So answer 112 and if it doesn't fit up or down ten the next attempt. Your video is very easy to follow, thank you so much!

Somehow I ended up with three stitches at the end of my first decrease row. I have been doing 16 knit one purl one and then doing an SSK making that my 17th. I ended up with 6 different sections. I don’t know what I did wrong but if someone could help that’d be great.
@rachelschallenkamp923 жыл бұрын
it depends on how many stitches across you are. the pattern says for an adult hat to cast on 112 stitches and when it comes to decreases you go by 20. she is going by 16 because she is making a smaller hat.
