It's a lot of fun, indeed. Talking about distances on water depends on many factors as there is; shape boat, shape propellor, load, still waters or stream, position outboard. etc. 4Ah can last for 3 Km on still waters with a 2 blade prop.

Ha, erg leuk. Toen ik klein was heb ik eens een zelfde soort aandrijving gemaakt. Achterop een klein bootje had ik met een lijmklem een plankje met een gat bevestigd. Door dat gat een as met aan de ene kant een accuboormachine en aan de andere kant een schroef. De as ging dus schuin het water in terwijl ik de boormachine vasthield om te sturen. Maar jouw versie met conische tandwielen is natuurlijk veel beter!

long time before Utube I had much fun with a Briggs&Stratton lawn mower engine mounted on an office chair base with a (rare) reverse pitch prop on a golf club, Dragon boat propusion ideal for weeds and a real hoot mouted on a mirror dingy

why not just have a straight shaft? less friction and faster like a mud motor

You could also do it "Bangkok water taxi style" with a straight drive shaft. Would save you some energy. I got an extension that rotates in the shaft. there wouldn`t be any gearing in the water too that way. Maybe someone could also figure out the best propeller for the given power.

i use a drill motor with a dowel and an model airplane prop attatched and it works great without all that linkage I'll have a video as soon as it gets warmer

Most places have laws against such things. You would need to get an experimental tag for your canoe if you were running any kind of improvised motor.I used to do things like this when i was a child.Have you ever considered going to technical school?You have the will,they will show you the way...To do things properly.

I built one - I heavily modified an 18V drill ($50) , used a propeller for $30 from walmart, PCV pipe, bolts and nuts and a few pieces of metal. I spent around a hundred. I could have just bought a complete trolling motor on Ebay for $120, but what fun would that be? My contraption isn't pretty but it's my first one. My goal is to built better and faster ones until my trolling devices are better than the ones you can buy.

I'd love to try this but my drill has too low of speed but lots of torque!! Should I go with bigger propeller then? or with more blades with steeper pitch?

This video is now a few months past 8 years old. I wonder how this outboard drill is getting along? My fear is that the motor has crapped out due to overheating. What say you Berto A?

How did you make the extension for the right angle drill adapter? It looks like you got a spacer or something that you used a tap and die on then connected it to a metal rod? Where did u find the parts for this?

me and myfriends r thinking of makeing a boat (were 13 we have made one b4 but we got bored so we sunk it :) ) and we thug that if we put one of these on and go out in 2 lake ontario we would need a boat licens do we ( we prob wont put it in the lake but we may)

haha.. Awesome ..I like this vid. You can even still use the drill as a drill!!! top idea.. in still water this looks like a cheap and effective idea.. Chinese drills are like USD$20 ea so you could afford to burn them out on a yearly basis!! LOL and still have a great outboard motor! 'Oke goed so'

Use a 12 volt drill with an old car battery and you'll be tooling around all day long.

Imaginative. I guess if you use an industrial quality drill with roller bearings you'd get more life out of it? An average DIY drill is rated about 10 hours before burn out. Factor x 20 for Industrial grade.

Of course it's an outboard! 'Outboard means it's not on board or inboard. The motor is outside or outboard the boat. A motor that is inside the boat, whether it is petrol, diesel, steam or electric, is an 'in-board' motor.....
