This build is going to be so cool when it’s done. I hate to be a downer, but I’ll be shocked if that pump tunnel doesn’t cause the pump to cavitation super bad. Not only is the opening much smaller than the pump itself, but the sharp corners and “arched” space just before the impeller will likely lead to air pockets forming at higher rpm’s. Keep in mind that the drill at full rpm is basically idle speed for that kawasaki 750, so spinning 3-4x the rpm with a pump tunnel that’s not very streamlined will almost certainly yield cavitation. Hopefully that’s not the case and it works exactly how you’re building it, but if it doesn’t, I think moving the engine to the front, building a longer driveline, and smoothing/lengthening the pump tunnel might be your best bet. This would allow the drive to sit a bit farther back and not be so cramped as well!
@sawyerwallace9631
@sawyerwallace9631 2 жыл бұрын
All that really needs to be done is the pump/intake has to be pushed back a bit to get a good smooth intake.
@EatSleepShift
@EatSleepShift 2 жыл бұрын
If not I'd make 2 more side tunnels on the sides of the engine and join them into the main tunnel..
@alexwirtz3047
@alexwirtz3047 2 жыл бұрын
@@sawyerwallace9631 that could also work, but then the pump would probably hang out the back a minimum of 6 more inches. Would still work, but would make the boat handle weird
@alexwirtz3047
@alexwirtz3047 2 жыл бұрын
@@EatSleepShift Interesting idea. That could work, my only concern would be if the “side tunnels” were too widely spaced, on would almost certainly come out of the water on harder turns leading to cavitation. Also extending the tunnels to be longer to reach around side the engine could mess with the fluid dynamics and lead to a big performance loss potentially

This is the first think I thought when I saw how far they were pushing that coupling back into the intake housing. It’s gonna have a lot of issues.
@gregoryfletcher6198
@gregoryfletcher6198 2 жыл бұрын
Lol built lots of jet boats here in nz. This is going to be awesome. Intake could be an issue but keen to see if it works or causes cavitation at speed. Note the nozzle will work better out of the water as the nozzle velocity is way higher , watch the marthon racing boats for a demo of this. This caught bill hamitlon out when he built the first jet units as he had the nozzle exiting underwater but found the boat went way faster with nozzle above the water line.

(From a naval architect/boat engineer) Can't wait to see it all together! The shape of the jet drive kills be a bit though. If the interior volume of the drive should be more of a wedge shape and less of a mailbox shape. If it is more of a wedge shape (less vertical at the impeller bearing) you will get better flow and more thrust. The present shape will cause a lot of eddy making resistance and possibly cavitation.

So they'll only get 40knots at just over half throttle? Was thinking the same as you but on the other hand I'd like to see them do more videos in the future, this is good enough to start with even if they have to change the impeller a couple of times haha

It sure is nice watching your little "plumbing" company grow so much over the years that I have been following your channel. From that first build with the Barbie cart, all the different cars and trucks and other 4 wheeled vehicles and right up to now Grind Hard Plumbing also has become a boatyard as well. Your little group has and most likely will grow much bigger. When are you guys going to start the new shop build? I know that I'm not the only one waiting for that to start. Hopefully, it will get lots of video coverage, just like your other builds. Keep up with the great work, doing what you do has been a pure pleasure to watch and I'm sure that there will be many more wonderful videos for your fans and friends to view. THANKS!!

I have a feeling you are going to have issues with pump cavitation when you have the motor turning it. In my experience that cavity in the top of the pump will hold a pocket of air and the smaller size of the intake might limit the waterfowl into the pump causing the impeller to spin freely in that pocket of air

what you need is a pipe anvil. find 3'-4' sections of heavy wall, steel tube, 6", 4", 2" in dia. at the scrapyard, weld them horizontally into a strong frame at the ends, parallel to each other, with about a 1/4" of space between them with the largest one in the center, weld some legs that you can bolt to the floor onto the frame holding the tubes, and presto! you can make smooth curves in sheet stock easy peasy, lemon squeezy. just insert the sheet between two of the tubes, and bend it around the dia. tube you desire like a brake. they're really useful for making body panels, drive shaft tunnels and the like. and being d.i.y., you can save a few hundy for project fundage. there are a couple of how to vids here on the youtubes that will give you an idea of what they look like, and just what they are capable of doing. honestly, i can't believe you don't already have one with all of the fab work that you do.

Best bet for getting a good flow geometry and not destroying the impeller would be to lift a complete pump housing and tunnel off a PWC and just retrofit it. Just a bit of info WD40 or CRC are your best friend when machining or drilling aluminium, stops the tool/drill from loading up and gives a beautiful finish. Also when cutting or grinding aluminium with a fiber disc use paraffin wax on the wheel and it wont load up and will cut like a hot knife through butter. Just use acetone to clean parts before welding.

100 HP is a lot of power in a tiny opening like that. 20 HP would probably be ok, maybe even 40 HP, but 100 HP? I fear they're going to suck a huge vacuum inside that tunnel. That cordless drill has maybe 300 W of power and the boat moved pretty fast. They want to increase that by 250 fold? Good luck! I don't think their water intake will have much more than water vapor inside it when cranked up to full power.

Might want to try smoothing out that transition above the impeller shaft. You have a good water seal now, but add something that will allow the water to smoothly fill the impeller inlet ring from the impeller shaft and up to the top of the housing near the ring. You’ll get much less air intrusion into the impeller, less cavitation in the inlet stream of water, and thus more power going into thrust than making bubbles.

Micro "Cracker Box Barbie Boat".. I grew up going to the boat races out at lake Havasu and while the circle boat racers were awesome to watch my favorite was always a good old vintage cracker box boats. If you lost the windshield added lots of deck length set up the seat at the transom just over the pump you would have all the leg room for comfort the weight distribution probably perfect would be a really fun little sporty ride.

Awesome video. Might require a bit more R&D into that pump housing, but i'm no professional. Super glad you guys started this build.

Yall are going to need a twin scoop intake grate with such a shallow intake. It will help a lot when trying to holeshot and midrange. It will also keep it from cavitating at high speed. Another bonus is it will slow you down fast when you let off the throttle. You can turn the one you have into a twin scoop intake grate. Look at pictures online and Ethan can do it under 10 minutes, lol.
