Straight teared up upon seeing this. Smash was a huge part of my life, from the OG on the N64. I remember it vividly. Couldn't even use smash attacks because my controller was broken. The thought of all these nintendo characters duking it out in the same game? It was awesome! Then there was Melee, which introduced Side B moves, had a bigger roster, and was lightning fast. Brawl changed things up with Final Smashes and a legitimate campaign that was actually pretty fun, (not to mention Co-op) And finally Sm4sh, with an even bigger roster, customizable movesets, mode game modes and 8. fucking. player. smash. It was insane! Long live this series. It's been a blast to play over the years.

For me, Melee had the best intro. Not only did it feel beautifully choreographed, the well timed animations hype you up because the movements synchronize with the music so both your eyes and ears are in sync with the invigorating crescendo of the orchestral music, and at the end, go out with a bang. A big explosion and a flaming title. Everything about it makes you excited to play!

64's intro is the only one that actually contains what I see as the essence of Smash Bros. to me: It's just a bunch of cartoony video game mascots beating each other up, which is hilarious, but also pretty exciting when you get down to it, which is why the ending's so suddenly awesome. Also, best announcer shout! Even though Melee's intro never quite had that factor to it, it's hands-down the best intro. It's exciting as hell, the music's dynamic, here's a whole lot of love even for things that AREN'T fighters in the game (Ridley, shit-tons of Pokemon,Goroh, etc.) and I honest-to-God refuse to skip it even now. Brawl's intro's not as dynamic and magical as Melee, nor as fun as 64's, but it's honestly grown on me over the past few months, while a lot of it's cutscene footage, it's well edited and the music fits well for the tone of Subspace Emissary. Granted, I don't like that tone, but it works for the intro-I love how climatic the end is with how it's like everyone's rushing to get to the fight. I've seen Smash 4's ACTUAL opening now and...honestly I don't know what to think. There's a lot of gameplay footage and some trailer footage thrown in, with the footage used actually being quite creative in how it's used-and I love how it shows off the three Third-Party characters near the end. I also FUCKING LOVE the Battlefield Theme (even though for some reason they cut out the best bit in the intro...) But it honestly doesn't grab me at all. It's not as crazy as 64, it's not as hype and nowhere NEAR as dynamic as Melee and it's not as climatic as Brawl, which is really weird because *every single reveal trailer was FANTASTIC in bringing the hype*, so it's really weird that the intro's just...not that exciting.

I think it's because since we've already seen the trailers, the opening itself kind of seems a bit off in terms of impact due to it being essentially what we already saw. The significance of those scenes aren't as strong because we've seen them before; many times, in fact, thanks to KZbin. Otherwise, this opening would've been very interesting and actually bring the hype if we haven't seen the trailers before. However, because we have been following this for so long, for us the opening just doesn't cut it. I don't blame Sakurai though. There's no reason to spend time on the opening when you could use that time to work on the content of the game itself.

I think one reason that the wii U/3ds intro is least hype, is because of how you can see part of the 3ds as the frame during the first part of the trailer. Also, there isn't outside of gameplay footage other than the beginning AC part and then the part where mario turns HD. Melee's trailer was the best, because It felt like the characters were bursting with power, and that they were actually fighting in a 3 dimensional plane. Also the part with zelda is really really well done, and I get goosebumps nearly every time. Makes me feel even the tiniest of a connection with the characters.

Sm4sh's just feels lazy and generic compared to the previous three. Overall, Smash 4 feels that it's lacking in character (not roster characters, obviously). Smash64: Charming. (It's a classic.) I have to admit that while the first game will alwas be my favourite because nostalgia, Super Smash Bros Brawl won over Melee because of one thing: the story. Brawl had a storyline involving all characters, allowing them interact with each other, even some of them getting redemption, and we got a lot of cutscenes with our favourite characters moving and all! The newest Super Smash Bros lacks that, and maybe is that why I barely play it, while I played a LOT of the other three. Besides...Mario and Link together. That has to be my childhood most fangirlish moment.

Your reasoning is poor though. What would a story mode have done? Given you one playthrough that takes a short amount of time? It's not like the SSE had any replay value by your standards, since replaying it is "the same damn thing." Or Classic/Adventure mode, since after all, playing it more than once is just "the same damn thing." They were aware that 90% of people's gameplay comes from the Smash mode, so they focused on that (hence stuff like 8-Player Smash being integrated.) Even then, it's not like the game skimped on lone single player stuff. Ignoring Smash Tour (which sucks,) we still have: -Classic -Events -Master Orders -Crazy Orders -Target Blast -Home Run Contest -Multi-Man Smash -Trophy Rush

KINGOFDASLIPPYS one of my favorite things in smash bros was the story mode. Nintendo then was actually taking it seriously almost like a movie. Smash your is pretty fun, but the rest of those modes you just named, I can't fucking grand them and I've only played them a couple times. I don't give a fuck about 8 players in a game! I want a fucking canon story mode from the Wii. And it's pretty awesome to see all the characters interact with each other and you get to play each one of them. Even with 2 players!

KINGOFDASLIPPYS story mode gave a lot of fangirl/boy moments when you saw 2 or more of your favorite characters from different video games play together as a team. Just like how hyrule warriors in legend of Zelda brought all the characters from the different timelines in the series. The other modes that you mentioned was cool but kinda boring bc they were sooo short and had not plot, emotions, hardcore battling etc.

***** During development, Sakurai and his team knew that wavedashing was there, they just decided to leave it in, not expecting it to be used so much. Other than wavedashing though, I don't think there were many other exploits that were used. L-cancelling was in 64 and Melee (and is in SSB4 to some extent), and crouch-cancelling is in all form of smash. I excluded some character specific exploits though, like Fox waveshine and Samus's super wavedash. People like Melee because it has a near perfect engine minus the exploits. It's fast, deep, and requires lots of planning when playing in higher level games.

I'm sorry but melees intro was the best. It's so perfect! It strikes every chord in your heart strings. The electricity running through your body as Mario transforms in the arena, the melancholic and beautiful atmosphere of Zelda's lament, the whimsical ride through space with Kirby and his warp star, the magnificent fast paced F-zero race, the intense space battle between Fox and Wolf, a dramatic Giga Bowser transformation on final destination, a nostalgia induced introduction of the first two generations of Pokemon, a teleportation through the town of Onett, all leading to the build up of an amped up announcer bellowing through your speakers that this melee was going to be the greatest one of them all! Goddamnit is this game gold! No other intro has ever impacted me the way melee's has, before or since. And I love all the games. I only wished that Smash 4's intro had the perfect balance that melee's music did. Not too bombastic and not too quiet.

People who say brawl is the best probably weren't even alive when melee or even the first smash came out. Melee was the best hands down. Brawl is just a rehash of the actual fighting and adventure mode.

anti youtube My first smash was Brawl too. I loved that game. I would play it non-stop when I could. But when I went to play it again, (I had my Wii in my room) I couldn’t find it. I looked everywhere but just couldn’t find it. I was so sad. But I only had 3 other games that would keep me company. Epic Mickey, Super Mario Sluggers, and Mario Sports Mix. Only played those 3 and I never found Brawl. I still have Epic Mickey, and Mario Sluggers. I couldn’t find my Mario Sports Mix either. I’m 12 right now, and I still keep my other 2 games as a reminder of how the Wii shaped my gaming life.
