Basically all sprite-work. If Nintendo would make the characters in 3D, then the backgrounds and such would be sprites like in Smash 64. Otherwise, the DS would struggle.

I love your project, the characters look amazing and capture the feeling of the DS really well. Although for the environments I would recommend using vertex colouring to simulate lighting like old games did it, it'll really bring your stages to life

They'd be hidden due to backface culling during gameplay! I like modeling the whole asset just to be able to show it off. This won't be the final version of the stage of course.

I wonder what characters would’ve been picked here… since the roster would’ve probably been finalized around 2002-2003, could we have seen characters like Isaac from Golden Sun, Chibi Robo, or a Gen 3 Pokemon?

For this project, the characters will have been finalized by late 2004. I'm thinking that the release window would have been around mid-2005 since I don't want to overlap with MKDS' release date. Smash would have also been the first game with Wifi compatibility. Can't get into specifics on who will be in, but look forward to more reveals throughout the next few weeks!

@@retromesh oof, very short development time it seems, (then again Melee was only 13 months) so it’d have to be pretty light on newcomers Though I’d imagine Wario would be a shoe-in for this game considering he was planned for Melee, King Dedede seems pretty likely too (though Meta Knight would probably be saved for Brawl since he fits that game’s darker style). Not sure about anyone else from Brawl though, since they either weren’t relevant in 2004 or would’ve been very big additions (like Sonic) and thus saved for Brawl due to it being a console game which generally had more priority.

I'd estimate 1.5/2 year development cycle, sounds about right, and some characters would be decided along the way. Like I believe that Roy was a last minute addition to Melee since his game wasn't even out yet at the time. There will definitely be some newcomers from Brawl, as well as some original characters, won't disclose them yet :)

I have a plan for everything! I plan to get a video addressing the issue in detail soon, but for now I'll leave you with this response that I replied to someone with a similar question, just for reference, the poly limit for the NDS is 2048 tris by the way! 600 tris at most per character, 800 tris at most for a single stage, 500 tris at most for a pokeball pokemon, and 100 tris for items. Those are the big stuff, effects will be mainly emited through planes, and stages won't be as complex, but stage hazzards will still be a thing and they will still feel fun. There will be a few limitations! Like if there are four players on screen, there can only be one pokeball pokemon, and 4 items at the same time. So if we run the math, 600x4 characters (since there can be up to four players) + 800 (stage) + (500) pokemon) + 100x4 (four items) = 4100. Now in video games, there is a technique called backface culling, which allows tris that are not seen by the camera to be hidden. Since Smash tends to always have a still camera, this would allow for at least half of the faces to be hidden. So if we divide our 4100 by 2 we would get 2050. I know that's two tris over the limit but screw it, this is the most amount of tris that there can be on screen at the same. However, there will be more implementations that I will address that will allow for more tris to be cut. In between now and that video, I plan to inform myself more on the hardware limitations of the DS and plan more accordingly. Stay tuned for it!

@@retromeshWavedashing is the result of air dodging carrying momentum when landing. It is not a glitch and it works as intended, it’s on record that the development team knew about wavedashing before release, but I assume they didn’t realize how meta defining it is. That’s why wavedashing exists in Ultimate, but was coded to have a lot of endlag, in order to be not as good as it is in Melee. but if the intent is to be a hypothetical what if scenario DS Smash, it’d prob be better to not include wavedashes/directional airdodges and just opt for the Brawl air dodge
