@@ibm30rpg Dang Melee fanboys get defensive over every factor of their game lol. I know Melee uses custom animations for the intro, and that Brawl used in game cutscenes, but that certainly doesn't mean that it took literally no effort at all. Brawl's Subspace Emissary is the definition of cinematic, and the cutscenes used in the intro probably took more work to make than Melee's anyways. You've got to cut the devs some slack for programing a new Smash game and a cinematic Adventure Mode. Plus Brawl's theme in many people's opinions including mine is the best in the series. (Not saying that I like vanilla Brawl better than Melee. I still like Melee the most out of all the games, but imo the best intro definitely is Brawl's.)

Kids today will never understand how insane the graphical leap from Smash on N64 to this was. There's a lack of insane technical innovations now adays compared to how it was back then. Seeing this and Luigi's Mansion made it seem like it was impossible for games to look that good.
@heavydonkeykong5190 Жыл бұрын
Someone in the audience mentioned it had been fifteen years since the Ice Climbers game, and that's honestly absurd to think about. Mario Galaxy was sixteen years ago, roughly the same timeframe between the beginning of the NES and the start of GameCube, and yet back then the jump from NES to GCN was so indescribable.
@maybefaith2310 ай бұрын
As a kid who’s grown up with newer games (I was born in the Wii/PS3/Xbox 360 era and got into gaming the generation afterwards) I think it’s a real shame how graphical leaps have stagnated. New stories and gameplay mechanics are always cool to see revealed, but the thing that always used to make it the most apparent a game was next gen was a graphical improvement. The leaps from NES to SNES, SNES to N64 and N64 to GameCube were all massive and always made you feel like you were looking at something new and advanced (at least, I imagine they did, I obviously wasn’t there), and the leap from the GC/PS2/Xbox era to HD consoles was super noticeable too. 7th gen to 8th gen? The improvements are definitely there, but they aren’t nearly as amazing as previous leaps. Then from 8th to 9th gen, there are basically no improvements at all. Like, to use a recent example, compare The Last of Us Part II on PS4 to the remastered version on PS5. There is literally no difference and I think that’s a real shame.
@gatotsu25015 ай бұрын
Not just Smash, everything about that generational leap was mind-blowing. Look at Silent Hill next to Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid next to Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy VII-IX next to Final Fantasy X, Goldeneye next to Halo, Resident Evil 1-3 next to REmake… the list goes on. And it wasn’t just about graphics, all these games introduced major gameplay features that weren’t possible on earlier hardware. Melee compared to SSB64 had way more characters, more items and customizable gameplay modes, bigger and more complex stages, music recorded with a live orchestra… I can tell you as a someone who played Smash 64 trying Melee for the first time, in the early 2000s it felt like video games could do and be anything now. There has never been a bigger leap in technology occurring during a creatively healthier time for the industry than the fifth to sixth generation transition in video games. The only competition is the fourth to fifth generations, when console developers gained access to disc-based media and 3D.
@gatotsu25015 ай бұрын
@@maybefaith23I just don’t think there’s actually that much farther to advance with graphics, and doing the advancement requires more and more expensive hardware for less and less noticeable improvement. In 1991, to portray a human figure in a video game you had to use a tiny abstract sprite or a blurry picture to represent a person. In 2001, you could use a detailed wireframe model and motion capture. The fifth generation of video games (DC/PS2/GCN/Xbox) was when video game graphics stopped being abstract and a person in a video game could now look, basically, like an actual person and not a simple cartoon character or series of Lego blocks. Once you’ve made that quantum leap, everything following it is just a matter of degrees. What I really miss from the fifth-gen era is the more creatively free industry with looser ideas about what a commercial video game could or should be. So many games these days are just a vague mush of familiar ingredients from other successful games and media properties, developed by huge teams where individual artists have less opportunity to stand out, for huge budgets that make publishers unwilling to gamble on any idea that won’t guarantee at least a million in sales. Back then you had publishers like Nintendo, Konami, Squaresoft, Capcom, etc. regularly putting out games that were completely different from anything they’d done before, pushing boundaries in terms of mechanical and artistic expression. Games like Pikmin, Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing, Mother 3, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, Monster Hunter, Killer7, Grand Theft Auto III, Indigo Prophecy, Xenosaga, The Sims, and many many more each in their own way represented radically new and visionary game ideas realized with the backing of major publishers. Even something like Luigi’s Mansion would be considered downright experimental by today’s standards. (A Nintendo character, in an original IP that represented Nintendo’s totally unique take on the survival horror genre?) What’s stagnated in the games industry isn’t just graphics, it’s innovation, which is a far worse thing to lose.

1:51, see my fellow Nintendo fans, although game play is most important, graphics DO matter to some degree :) See how excited the crowd was towards the Gamecube's graphical power?
@metaretroaction870711 жыл бұрын
I greatly agree since without updated powerful machinery to run better graphics on there can't be much of game play in the first place. It takes innovation along with improved merchandise to constantly evolve the gaming experiences, because how much thrill do you think someone would get out of exploring the vast land of Skyrim on a limited Atari System? or how about something like Devil May Cry or God Of War? point made until someone can prove to me that an equal amount of enjoyment from the games listed can still be had on a console like that.
@NASCARFAN16010 жыл бұрын
Even though it is one of the first releases, I think Melee is, graphically, one of the system's best games. Some of the stage and item textures weren't anything special, but the character designs...damn. So much detail to them, I love the "realism" feel the characters in SSB tend to have, and I think Melee was the best demonstration of that. A lot of the characters' designs are resurrected from their N64 appearances, and look gorgeously remastered, and comparable to the art for their respective games.
@mrm6410 жыл бұрын
NASCARFAN160 No kidding. But that Pokemon Stadium tho!! I mean that ground looks like an actual rug! And that is from 2001.
@metaretroaction870710 жыл бұрын
I'd say the pokémon stadium floor would be most comparable to a tennis court ground, but Im sure we can all agree that this game truly shines in it's model improvements. I think the reason melee is still considered the most graphically improved out of the later is because of how we all remember link looking in the first one, characters like mario and fox had shapes for hands and captain falcon looked like a straight up doll, even kirby in the first smash pales in comparison to his latest appearances but we didn't care then, you know why? because that was what we probably considered advanced at the time, but then we saw how they were able to take the franchise to the next level with melee, and that in turn lead us to expect more from brawl when we saw it's trailer, and soon to be smash u/3ds, so if done right improvements can be good for people and can lead to a raised standard of what we want to see in next gen gaming, this includes graphics, game play, and overall options of what were able to do in the gaming environment.
@RIPhikennoace10 жыл бұрын
Nobody denies that graphics matter, but they still (to me at least) come after the gameplay and the artistic design
