Don't think it was ever really successful, but it did eventually lead to the creation of Donkey Kong, after Nintendo's second arcade game, Radarscope, was also a failure. Sheriff was referenced in Super Smash Bros for Wii U, 3DS, and Ultimate as an assist trophy.
