Man, as a casual, I LOVED THIS VIDEO! I only played Smash for fun and I never understood how people could be so good at it. Now I respect competitive smash players more, cause I "understand" the mechanics behind it. What I don't understand is the comment section, it made me sick. All I see are competitive players bashing on casuals because they play for fun and casuals hating on competitive players for using "exploits". I mean, really? How can you hate on someone for having fun? How can you hate on someone for being better than you, and working hard to get better? I just don't understand the logic behind these people, it's just sad.

I have been on the comment section for hours. It's clear that the people fighting are the casuals, not the competitors. Casuals are so elitists it sickens me. At least you aren't so stupid

@BoredDan7 9 жыл бұрын
Ddiaboloer You're obviously being very subject to confirmation bias is you think it's only the casuals being elitist. There is just a lot of vitriol going around from both sides. Luckily there are also a lot of level headed people saying play how you want to play.

BoredDan What I mostly see is a stupid comment by a causal then many competitors telling him why he is ignorant. I don't see it the other way round. The comments here are "People that only play Melee just like glitches" not "People that only play Brawl suck". Seriously, it's the casuals that are attacking
@BoredDan7
@BoredDan7 9 жыл бұрын
Ddiaboloer There is definitely more top level comments that are anti-comp, but if you actually read a lot of the responses you'll see a lot of anti-casual talk. Also statements such as "a stupid comment by a causal then many competitions telling him why he is ignorant" come off as elitist and condescending.

Just gonna throw this out there. Saying that the competitive community hated Brawl because it lacked AT simply isn't true and is a huge oversimplification. People hated Brawl because it was slow and campy, and rewarded defensive play to an extreme extent. Add in to that the fact that the game is the most unbalanced in the series, and you have a lot of people dismissing it outright for many, many different reasons.

Brawl was always the type of game for those who didn't know anything about fighting games and wanted something new and fresh and for the pros to complain about it, tells you that they're out of touch with the community as a whole. Not everyone wants to be the next year's EVO champion for pete's sake. I'm the type of guy who plays fighting games for a challenge and don't really care about frames and all that shit. Sure there's games that are so bad that it's an issue (i.e. Samurai Showdown III) and I do my homework on those games before playing them but for the pros to criticize the devs for their so-called ineptitude on what should and shouldn't be there is stupid.

What I don't understand in Sakurais decision at all is the fact that advanced stuff like "Wavedash/L-cancel" is not common knowledge for the average person playing the game. The people that wanna play games competitive will search up a community for it or maybe build it up and the player that just wanna play "for fun" (why would competitive players not have fun anyway :P) will play it in their own way. In games it is not a "right" or "wrong" way of playing. The Smash Brothers series shows that with so many modes the normal outcome is that people will have a preference in what they prefer. Some people play with items, some people do not, and some people like Break the targets the most. With that said, if people do not wanna use advanced techniques they are, by no means, forced to use them. And the competitive players and the casual gamers will very rarely play against each other, so everyone can play the game EXACTLY like they wanna play it. The thing is, when you remove stuff intentionally just to make one part of the audience mad, I don't really know what to say. I understand why Sakurai made the game slower (easier to control) and I understand why he made it easier to get back on stage, because this is necessary mechanics to play the game, but advanced techs is not NECESSARY. It adds depth to the game and a lot of people like it. Most people is not aware of it and did not even notice WD and many other techniques were removed, so with this said, Sakurai, I really do not understand your way of thinking here. Professional smash player for 10 years but I started of as a casual player in Smash 64 about 6 years before I did enter my first tournament. Melee was my favorite game from the moment I touched it and that was almost 3 years before my first tournament and did realize many of those things did even exist /Armada

When I was a kid, I used to think that I was good at video games. Then I learned that I was good, but I wasn't INSANE, and you will never really be as good as a game as people who are insane. There are always people who's enjoyment of playing games comes not at playing the game well, but at taking it apart and figuring out how to best exploit every feature in order to achieve the best possible success. I don't have that level of insanity.

Some people find competitive play more fun. I know I do. And none of these "secret moves" are really hard to find at all, if you looked up tips on how to get better at Melee, the first stuff you'd find is about L-canceling and wavedashing. It's not the 90's anymore, all it takes is a quick internet search.

Hiding secret moves? What? There are no secret moves because practically every competitive player uses advanced techniques. This is not just in smash bros either.
@roseypls
@roseypls 9 жыл бұрын
KingCreepa The fun in these advanced techniques is that you're getting more results for the more effort you put into getting better. If no advanced techniques exist, then the game is basically won with RNG and luck. But some people just play because they're stimulated and it's bright colors beating each other up on screen. To each their own.
@Magnet_Chaos

1- Fun is subjective. 2- Competitive gaming is all about finding new skills and exploiting the game. 3- They don't want moves to make them be better. They want moves that make the game deeper. Lack of depth isn't fun for them. 4- Who the hell is hiding this secret moves? They are all over the internet and guides.

It's funny because Yungtown mentions how characters who have vertical kill potential (Fox), would be good on stages like Fountain of Dreams, however that is Fox's worst stage, and characters who have bad recovery (C. Falcon) would be bad on Dreamland, but that is Falcon's (arguably) best stage.

News Flash: Every AT mentioned in this video is relatively easy to learn with practice. News Flash: Using AT's does not guarantee a victory. News Flash: If someone works harder than you at something, it's only natural they will succeed. News Flash: These are not "glitches", but known engine exploits. News Flash: The competitive community has not hampered the play of any Casual Players. News Flash: Brawl was disliked for reasons other than just "not being Melee". News Flash: Play the game how you want to play. News Flash: Stop feeling entitled to victory simply by putting a few hours into a game. Skill Ceilings exist and games like Melee have virtually impossible to attain skill ceilings, so personal growth is always happening. Achieving a goal and truly getting good at a genuinely difficult game is extremely rewarding. If you feel its unfair, would you consider it unfair if a rival sports player put more work into an advanced skill and beat you? Finally, News Flash: Don't be a dick. The competitive community does not want to hamper your enjoyment of the game. Rather, we aim to create a welcoming and friendly community for players of ALL skill levels(this is very true at the local level), and are always willing to help new players develop and learn. If you choose to enjoy the game as you feel it is intended, than Bravo! More power to you. But don't feel the need to shame others for wanting to get better at game by using it to the fullest. (Anecdote: I became involved in the Melee community this past summer, and besides getting better at the game, I have made many amazing friends. I never feel like I cant be myself at smashfests or tourneys, and no one has ever been anything but the most welcoming and generous to me, be it with their time or resources. The smash community is just a group of people who deeply love their respective games, and want to foster a spirit of healthy competition, no matter which game they play. However, nothing difficult comes easily. If you want that W, git good(; )

pacack824 No, people just want every possible exploit they can get to up there odds, instead of just playing. There are people that want to just play and enjoy, but when it comes to fighting games and you are a regular person trying to get into it and you face a more experienced person using short cuts and exploits it quickly becomes not fun and can turn a potential buyer off of purchasing the game, which is not good business.

I don't get why casuals have an issue with competitive players. Casuals will play the game for maybe a month and move on to a different game. Maybe pop it back every now and then to play with a friend maybe. Competitive players are the ones who are gonna stick with the game for months, maybe even years, mastering the game, and getting the most out of it, and yet, we're not the "real gamers", we're not the ones who really get the spirit of this game. Yea we care about winning, why? Cause being able to beat other GOOD players, is the result of our own efforts. It's not that we only care about winning, we care about getting good at a game, and higher the skill ceiling, the more we can improve. If you don't like these complicated maneuvers, and you don't want to put in the time to get better at a game, you don't want to get higher on the skill ceiling, Fine, that's cool. It's your copy of the game, you play it the way you want it, but then why get in the way of the people that do want to spend the time. And if your argument is "Well I don't think it's fair that if I run into someone who put in more time then I do in a game, that I have little to no chance at beating them", which if that is your argument, then I really don't know what to say cause, that's what the point of non co-op multiplayer is, to see who the BETTER, player is, in other words, who is more skilled, in other words, who put in more time. So I don't understand why casuals can't just play the game casually, and let the ones who want to get competitive be competitive. This game is the only game with a community where there is a Casual vs Competitive mindset. No other game has that.
@kaihedgie
@kaihedgie 9 жыл бұрын
Tommy9834 So in order to get good at a game, you have to break it. Exploiting the game physics and using glitches just to get to the top. "So I don't understand why casuals can't just play the game casually" Might have something to with the fact that casual players often bump into competitive players, then get smashed on by their ridiculous glitch exploitation, then no one has fun.
@hoodoojim
@hoodoojim 9 жыл бұрын
kaihedgie Glitch exploitation you say? Ignoring the fact that all the methods listed in the video were intended to be in the game, these "glitches" are widely available for all parties to use. If you choose to not use the "glitches" thats your problem. Just don't get mad when you lose to someone else who put more time in than you.
@kaihedgie
@kaihedgie 9 жыл бұрын
Consentrait Wavedashing was never meant to be in Melee as Sakurai stated. While he left it in there, he never even said it was a game mechanic or that it was even intended in the first place. "Just don't get mad when you lose to someone else who put more time in than you." Sorry, but I put more time in to having fun playing the game as it is, rather than having to cut more than half the gameplay out just to be "good" at it.
@hoodoojim
@hoodoojim 9 жыл бұрын
kaihedgie Sakurai left it in the game. It is a game mechanic. No one has to explicitly state that it is a game mechanic. Whether or not it was intended to be there (which obviously it was since Sakurai noticed it, and decided not to take it out) is irrelevant. But I will note you cant say that it was never intended to be there if the developers, given the option to take it out, decide not to. Even If I grant you that, the other things mentioned still aren't "glitches" as you called them. Besides. It's not like they have an unfair advantage. You are perfectly capable performing the techniques as well. Anywho, you're perfectly fine playing the game , having fun how you like, there's no reason to talk down to competitive players, who are having fun challenging themselves, getting better, and socializing in the community. Might not be fun to you, but people get off on this stuff. But I dont really care about competitive Smash too much, but I respect other people do. I'm just here til Guilty Gear comes out if I'm being honest.
@kaihedgie
@kaihedgie 9 жыл бұрын
Consentrait A game "mechanic" that was completely unintended, incredibly obscure and requires exploitation to pull off, then had to be removed in later installments. Sorry, but I simply don't buy that based on looking at Sakurai's wording a certain way to support this

I'm actually happy that Brawl exists, even though I hate it personally. It introduced many new players to the smash community, which is what the point of it was. I feel that Smash 4, is the perfect balance of Casual and Core, you can play it either way, and it is fun. Another interesting thing about Smash 4 is that it seems that every character has their own Advanced Techniques, rather than everyone sharing all of the Advanced Techniques, which makes learning a character more difficult and fun. Smash 4 is amazing and is easily the best in my opinion, followed by Melee.

Ddiaboloer The game is so new that who can really say? It took Melee a while to have its competitive scene grow and bloom the way it did. Ddiaboloer I'm pretty sure Melee had more advanced techs, cause I thought Brawl had all of the advanced techs from Melee except it was missing, L-Cancelling, Wave Dashing, and Dash Dancing, I might be forgetting something though. Like I said before, Smash 4 is still pretty new, and new advanced techs are being discovered bit by bit. You can't say that it doesn't have any, when it does. Again, as bad as brawl was, it still had a competitive scene. At least Smash 4 doesn't have that stupid random tripping.

Anyone who really does hate Brawl just because wave dashing was taken out is kinda just being grumpy. Brawl was a great game for a lot of reasons other than physics. Not saying it was better than Melee, not saying Melee was better either. I really don't consider any Smash game better than the others: they all have their own unique features and are awesome because of it. The Melee-superiority mindset does bug me, though. But that's the fans, not the game's fault.

And? Still doesn't mean Brawl didn't have a lot of cool stuff in it. More character variety, less direct clone characters, more stages to choose from, stage builder, an expanded adventure mode turned story mode, and (for what it was worth) online play. But that still doesn't mean Melee isn't great too. It's got some characters that are pretty much exclusive to the game, adventure mode is awesome, it handles break the targets better, and getting all the trophies is a much less tedious process. I don't want to argue a side, I just want people to stop fighting over which is better, and realize that all Smash bros are fantastic and have things that they do the best.

I'm a competitive Melee player. I'll tell you this: there's one thing that separates a casual player (I don't mean that offensively) and a competitive player, and that would be the desire to win. Ever since Elementary school, I've been the best gamer in my class. I'd beat everyone at Mario Kart, or any multiplayer DS game pretty much. The reason why was because I had a desire to win, not everyone has that in video games. I honestly believe that's why competitive people are who they are, they have a desire to win. They want to be able to practice a game...A LOT...and play their friends, crush them, and see fruit from there practicing, not play the game a lot, and watch as some game mechanic, let's say items, gets in the way on their crusade for glory. There's nothing wrong with casual play, but I just wanted to represent the competitive side and their reasoning for wanting competitive techniques. I was a causal brawl player, still wanting to crush my friends, when I saw competitive brawl, I then found PM, then Melee. It fascinated me, from then on I saw another way to play, it felt so good learning all those techniques and watching fruit bear from my practice. Thanks for readin'.

Honestly, I do think its a shame than Sakurai removed a lot of these techniques. Not because "Melee is the Best" or that they are "Necessary to make a Smash game fun". It's because they add another level of depth to explore to the game that you love. I had been blissfully unaware to all of these techniques about a year ago. Until I stumbled across "The Smash Brothers" documentary that showcased the competitive scene. It made me go to a local tournament because at the time I considered myself a really good player. (Oh, Was I Wrong!) Simply put I got demolished. But the community was really supportive. I was invited over to learn new tech and be coached on where I went wrong. Which felt impossible at the time but after hours of practice I got it down. I started learning new combos making my own and the game felt fresh again. This new play style was never to down play the enjoyment I had when I played casually but to breath new life into one of my favorite games of all time. I just wish more people could experience that with games they love too.

That's exactly like how it is with pokemon! Pokemon seems like a simple RPG mon game but has very deep mechanics that govern it. I honestly don't get what sakurai meant by a skill gap. So what if there is one? Isn't the point of a fighting game to "git gud"? You're supposed to take a loss in stride, to learn from it. Instead of complaining to a superior player who knows how to tech or saying he's just exploiting the game, as him to teach you. Isn't the point of a game to improve?

The thing is, that IS how I have fun with the game. Me and my friends and the great portion of competitive players have fun by learning new techs and using the skill that we learned to best the skill of our opponents. Even if we lose, we take it in stride, laugh it off and get better. I apologize if my comment sounded harsh initially, but no one seems to even think that people who play competitively have fun while they do it. I personally have tons of fun.

That's your logic. Also, your analogy to Smash 4 intensity is completely stupid, because you are making the game give you easier opponents, while online or in real life, you're going to run into people who body you. You aren't just entitled to have average opponents in a mode where anyone can play against you (actually, making a mode where you are matched with opponents who have similar records to you would be a fucking amazing idea). Sometimes I like to play with 3 other people with pokeballs and stuff, that's also super fun. But the fact that you are calling competitive play "not fun" really ticks me off.

Minato Arisato as i said iam fine with people wanting to play it competitively my problem is those competitive players saying brawl is terrible and anyone who plays it is autistic merely for the fact that a few features were removed or reworked to make it more friendly to newcomers. clearly people care about competitive play... i wasn't arguing that. what i was saying was if other players care they will seek that information out or come across it(my apologies for not being more clear). however for those that just want to have fun its kind of silly to force your play style on someone else. when they had no problem with they way brawl or the 3ds version works to begin with. my problem is these competitive players saying "this game sucks because it doesn't cater to my very specific needs therefore no one else should like it ether". if you want to say brawl isn't good for competitive then i agree. but the problem is you people say it sucks because it falls short in that very small portion of the fan base, when the only thing that should matter is weather it is fun to play and before you say the competitive scene isn't small, proportional to the full fan base it is pretty small.

@jubjub1114
@jubjub1114 9 жыл бұрын
Nathan Karr Wavedashing and L cancelling are not glitches, they were intentional parts of the game. Also, many stages have stage hazards, and items are unpredictable. When there's luck in competitive play, it makes the game less deep. In fact, back in the day, competitive smash players on the west coast used to play with items, and you know what happened? A guy who usually places top 10 got 2nd one time, 15th the next, 11th the next, 32nd the next, etc. When inconsistent results are occurring it means that luck is playing too much of a part.

I mean, no one wants to know they aren't as good as someone else, but I've heard people complain that games that are competitive are "too hard." But instead of nurturing this community, Sakurai said "REEEEE FUCKING TOURNEYFAGS THAT'S NOT HOW YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO PLAY" and almost killed that community off for a time. Now think of it the opposite way. Instead of Sakurai making the game easier, what if he made the skill ceiling much higher, and fleshed out wavedashing and L-cancelling and stuff like that in Brawl? It would kill off the casual seen, and casuals would be pissed that they couldn't play the way they wanted to because that's not how Sakurai thinks they should.

It wasn't until years after I discovered how many salty Melee players there were cursing Sakurai's name and labeling him incompetent. I always found that funny. The places where I play I distinctly remember when wave dashing was introduced and everyone started using it, pretty much making it so only high level players were playing. It was almost the same thing in CVS2 where high level players in those were parrying and just defending while stringing up combos like noones business. I suppose it happens to all fighters eventually(where if you aren't great, don't bother because being good ain't good enough), and why fighting fans got so salty. Them wanting the game to be a fighting game, catering to more advanced techniques and knowing the ins and outs and exploits and the creator wanting a party which everyone enjoys, leveling the playing field for everyone.

I'm not saying it's justified, because it isn't. But that's not the reason. It's because in most fighting games, a novice can occasionally get lucky and win against a better player. But the competitive scene for Melee more or less requires learning what is basically a glitch that requires dexterity even other fighting games don't. This makes less experienced players feel excluded, especially when the only advice they get for their trouble is "git gud." There's also the removal of items so that the game is "entirely skill based and not random", but I see that as a limitation because it means you never learn to deal with unexpected situations. Regardless, there shouldn't be so much malice. And later games in the series are a bit better balanced. But the people who want to play Melee like chess, with set strategies and not risking a bob-omb spawning right when they attack should be allowed to.

Hey, I just finished up a Smash Bros. retrospective series on my own channel, so it's good to see DYKG putting out some more in-depth content like this, too. I approve of this style, and I wouldn't mind more videos that cover more than just mere trivia. Presenting technical info like this in an easy-to-digest format would definitely be valuable.

Saying the new smash sucks because of no wave dashing or l-canceing is like saying a street fighter game would be terrible without the bonus stages
@Skullivon
@Skullivon 9 жыл бұрын
That... That statement makes no sense. Bonus stages aren't a core mechanic of the game which add considerable depth to competition. There are legitimate arguments for the removal of L-cancelling, since lowering landing lag across the board would achieve almost the same effect, but wavedashing is a good thing. Smash 4 doesn't suck as a result of not having these things, but it would arguably be all the richer for their inclusion.

Honestly, like, where do competitive players tell casuals that they're playing the game wrong or whatnot? Like, all I see are casuals saying "competitive play sucks" or "it wasn't intended to be played this way" (like fuck the way it was intended to be played), and competitive players defending their stances. Honestly, it's not a warzone so much as a one-sided massacre. Like, show me instances of the competitive players/scene telling casuals that they suck because they play the game casually. I've seen ONE person throughout this whole comment section who has even called someone a filthy casual, and they've admitted to just liking people getting angry. This whole "war zone" bullshit needs to stop, because it just isn't back and forth. Don't get me wrong, there are a bunch of casuals here defending the competitive scene, but the elitist casuals far outnumber the elitist competitive players.

Usually the Players that makes fun of casual players are "Competitive players" and i use quotes because in reality there no diffrent then the casual player but need a special snowflake title under their name, Casuals get the wrong idea of competitive players because of the "Competitive players" Because in reality real competitive players love having casual players around, it helps us relax and have fun(Not to say competitive players get board in tournaments its still fun is just having casuals around brings a family of friends together by just throwing a bomb at somebodys face with a old fasion all items)so in response to "Competitive players" casuals bash competitive play all because of the Special Snowflakes.

Guess I'll throw my two cents out there too. I personally like *all* Smash titles, Yes, even Brawl. The competitive aspect of each game isn't the only deciding factor on which one I like better. Yes, I prefer Melee (almost equally to Smash 4 now tbh) the most, though if I had to pick, I'd stay with PM because Melee has bad character balance (admittedly so does Brawl), but if we're sticking with "official" games, I'd say Melee. But here's the thing: I preferred it LONG before I got into competitive play. Maybe it's years of bias because I main Mewtwo and Roy, but I definitely missed them in Brawl. I actually didn't get into competitive Smash til the start of this year. If you think competitive play, advanced techs, and evolution of the metagame "ruins" Smash, you are objectively wrong. There's no questioning that. Beyond the obvious fact that no one's forcing you to play competitively, the fact of the matter is, if you play a game enough and love it enough, you'll want to take it further and learn that type of thing and enter tournaments, etc. Maybe that's just my mindset. It just makes things more fun and interesting. I don't even mind playing casually with items and such on with friends; us competitive heads don't completely deplore that type of gameplay. Don't tell us to "move onto Street Fighter" or whatever. If you want to stay in happy fun casual land where everybody wins, so be it, but don't act like we're not playing the game right.

but that skill gap should come from skill, not exploit knowledge. the competitive smash scene is nothing more than wannabes that know how to ruin a good game. their fun is through victory, no longer the game. their gameplay is in using the bugs in the game to gain an advantage. and from what i can see here, i see no one claiming to be hardcore that is actually happy that the game has undergone much needed balancing issues, exploit prevention, and more. if you compare smash's competitive scene to others like csgo and tf2, you'll see that those people aren't looking for little exploits for their advantages.

elgatochurro "...and casual Smash players are nothing more than elitists who feel entitled and think their game should be played a certain way by everyone!" ^See, I can generalize a large group too! It doesn't look any better, does it? On the contrary, competitive Smashers are some of the nicest, most social people you'll meet. I'm becoming a big part of the Waco scene lately, and I've already befriended about twenty people through it. And that's just people I know IRL. Don't even get me started on internet friends. Don't tell me that our fun is only through victory. Some of the best times we've had is laughing at ridiculous things that happen ingame like backwards grabs or dead weight KOs. Sometimes we'll actually pause the game just to laugh. Yeah, you'll have the odd one out who comes in and claims they can beat everybody, but it's so rare and it's something that happens in *all* gaming communities. Some hardcore Melee-heads hate Smash 4 and refuse to give it a chance. So what? Fuck 'em. Smash 4 is awesome and I can't wait to attend tournaments for it. Lastly, advanced techniques are *not* bugs. This is fact. I won't discuss it further. You, sir, are heavily misinformed.

The sad part about Mr. Sakurai is that his removal of advanced techniques did not really matter in terms of leveling the playing field. Pros play together and party smashers play together. All it did was harm part of the community while providing no actual improvements to the other. With proper online matchmaking, there's no reason why online wouldn't be properly leveled either.

Melee fanboys need to understand that making a super competetive Smash Bros. game is not Nintendo's big focus any more. It may have been back with Melee itself, but it's obvious with brawl and the newly released Smash game that they're no longer worried about that. No amount of bitching from them is going to change that because melee fans are a minority, and making a game specifically for them would probably cause regular gamers (the ones that don't devote their lives to a single video game) to lose interest, meaning they'd lose sales. They should just move on and play Street Fighter 4, MvC 3 or any other fighter game meant for competetive play, because right now they're doing nothing more but being annoying unlikable assholes.

Ur right, I'll stop playing a game I like and go onto a game I don't like cuz it's suppose to be played that way! That's not how people work dude, if someone likes a game, they have the right to play it anyway they want. Any game that pits one against another will be competitive, whether people like it or not, and people will try to make it as fair as possible if they care enough about it. Spewing that playing a certain way is better and everyone else is dumb is immature and outright wrong, whether that person is a competitive player, or a casual. I don't support melee players saying casuals suck and I don't like casuals saying melee players are "tourneyfags."

Actually, I think Smash 4 is highly designed to be competitive. I mean, Nintendo even sponsored a national tournament I think the day after the 3DS version released. Most people in the Smash community agree that Smash 4 is the most balanced entry in the series that's been released yet. Granted, it's nowhere near as fast or technical as Melee, but I think Nintendo at last finally supports the idea of Smash being played at a competitive level, evidenced not just from their laser-focus on balanced game mechanics and tournament support, but also in all of the modes they've provided in Smash 4 (like For Glory) that are specifically tailored for the competitive community.

Ugh these comments tho First of all, no one really cares if your casual or competitive. People are treating it like they are being segregated for sexual orientation or something when really its not that big of a deal. Second of all, Sm4sh was the game that introduced me to the competitive scene. Starting with 3DS I realized that 90% of the stages were bad, and some items were just completely broken (COUGH COUGH BEETLE AND GUST BELLOWS.) As well as the only 1v1 mode being For Glory, and how my brother was much too busy to play as frequently I need that. Thats how I went competitive. Sm4sh is currently my favorite in the series for being a blend of Brawl and Melee, at least in my opinion. I felt it was less clunky then the past 3 generations, they fixed a lot of things (Edge guarding ._.) and almost all of the characters are unique and have their own play style. Customs, although I am not a fan of, do add another layer of depth to play styles. Third of all, can we stop? Like really? This series was intentionally a party game, Like Mario Party and Mario Kart. It just so happened to go competitive. Who cares if you play with items? Who cares if you only play certain stages? Newsflash though, you are a douchebag if you degrade one another for playing a certain way in a video game. People need to grow up >.>

God fucking dammit people. Can I ever go into the comment section without seeing some sort of flame war going on? What is this deal with people thinking that there is only one way to play Smash and one way to have fun? If you're a casual and mess around with your friends, that's fine. If you're a competitive player who competes in tournaments and uses advanced techniques, that's also fine. Why should it matter how others play the game? Don't like the way competitive players play the game? Don't play that way. No one is forcing you to play that way. Same goes for the competitive players. *Play the game the way YOU want to play.* That's the true joy of Smash. You can do almost whatever you please. Whether the series was intended to be a party game or not doesn't matter. If people play the game in their own crazy way and they're having fun, then leave them be. The game did its job, to entertain the player. In short, it's okay to not like things. Just don't go around being an asshole to other players. Just have fun with this amazing series. Anyway, I'm done ranting. I'm gonna go play some Smash and have some fun.

You can play it For Fun and For Glory. (Haha, wow I'm so funny.) The thing that makes Smash Bros. so special to me is the fact that you can both play it at high level or just have fun with it. I find it interesting to see what type of crazy shit people can pull at high level play. Yet, Smash Bros. is so simple on its surface that anybody can get into it. Ya know, kinda like Pokemon. Everyone can get into it, but there's the other aspects like IVs and EVs and all those extra things that make up the competitive scene. But back on point, I really dislike all the hostility both sides give to each other. Just let them play the game how they want, guys. Not too hard.

When football/soccer was first created, it wasn't created with all the advanced and technical skills that people use today in mind. It was most likely created by some people who wanted to have fun with a ball. Just because the advanced techniques aren't built into the idea of some game, it doesn't mean credit and reverence shouldn't be given to people who discover and master these techniques. Football/soccer was most likely created to be played "casually", for fun with friends, and there are undoubtedly more casual players of football/soccer in the world than pros still. And that's fine, just like it's fine for Smash. But the casual football players don't hate on the skills and advanced techniques of pro footballers, they respect them, I think a similar respect should be applied to players of games like Smash. And maybe, if that mentality of "its just a game for fun, you're not allowed to take it seriously" was removed for Smash, people who spent 1000s of hours getting great at this game would be more rewarded for their efforts than they have been, and the community wouldn't have to be so underground in comparison to something like sports. And also, some of the competitive players would probably start being less dick-ish if they didn't feel like most the casual players were against them. tl;dr - Play it casually all you want, it's fine, but why not respect and support the pros/competitive players also?

You can tell that someone has no idea what they're talking about when it comes to competitive smash when they harbor the delusion that wavedashing completely breaks the game. Wavedashing does not grant you invincibility, if you do it mindlessly it will hurt you more than help. There's only two characters in melee (Luigi and Ice Climbers) that use wavedashing as their primary movement option. It's just a tool which gives the game more depth in terms of movement options which in turn creates a more fast paced fighting game which is entirely unique from anything before or since. It's a shame people can't be more open minded to people playing games how they choose, it's like discovering penicillin and insisting that it not be utilized because it came from mold and that's what it was always intended to be.

"If they're better than me, they aren't having fun." good one bro, fun us subjective and anyone can have fun doing just about anything. Just cuz they don't play the way u do doesn't make it any less fun. I have been to 3 tourneys in the last 5 months and have only won 3 sets, but it's the most fun I've had playing a video game ever.

I'm a casual, but I like watching smash tournaments, I enjoy watching the full capacity of a character and how people can use them to their advantage. Just because I don't have the time or dedication to learn everything, doesn't mean I don't like competitive players. So if you would just stop arguing about how to play a game, and realize there is no right and wrong way to play it, that would be, amazing.

I really dislike this "Level the Playing Field" mentality, it's really dumb honestly. There's nothing unfair about wave dashing because it takes a huge amount of time and effort to master, so if you have mastered it you deserve to win. I'm not great at Smash but I still deserve to win over some guy who's played Smash twice in his life.

The fact that these techniques exist in Melee and are so well-known by the competitive Smash community speaks volumes to me of their determination and insightful nature in the exact wrong direction. Instead of using that energy to figure out what characters they like or what things they'd like to see next in this obviously-lighthearted, easy-going party-game of a series, they decide they'll figure out how to make sure no one ever has fun playing the game except themselves. Basically, I'm sick and tired of going to a public place with a Smash game expecting to have fun with friends, and end up fighting That Guy who has to have no-items-Final-Destination or he pitches a fit like a child and ruins everyone's good time.

I think they should play a different game, honestly. Smash Bros. has always had items and stage hazards as factors in play. While I can understand the issue with lucky item drops being annoying and game-changing factors, I can't understand why these people demand that not only are items entirely turned off, but they play on a stage with no hazards as if they hadn't had the time or energy to become aware and conscious of a stage's moving parts. There are numerous games out there with much more competitive and less divided communities than Smash, where the Pro Players can get their Pure Skill needs met. I don't know why they feel the need to make a competitive atmosphere out of a casual game, and moreover force that set of home-rules on everyone they play against to the detriment of anyone else's enjoyment. I never see a casual player of Smash approach a small group of competitive players and demand without reproach that items be turned on and everyone play on Big Blue, only the Pro players seeing Smash being played and -- I presume -- an opportunity to flex their Pro-Level muscles in the faces of everyone else playing.

Reading the comments made me really mad, I don't were should I start ... Ok first of all no matter how competitive the game gets casual players are going to enjoy it as long as is bright and has their favorite characters, if the competitive aspect doesn't matter to Sakurai there is no point in trying to close the gap between wannabe competitive players and pros ; second you guys don't know how much the melee community struggle to get were it is and brawl who is an inferior competitive game in every single aspect got a undeserving spot in a lot of events just because it was the new thing, 3 although is different smash 4 actually works and melee fans have to accept that even if is not as fast is still a good game that actually fix several problems and 4 and perhaps the most important part, we don't give a fuck if you're casual everyone pays for his game and plays it in their own way and even if the game has things like wavedash or l cancel it would never affect you in any way shape or form

I agree 100% with this. My only gripe is that sm4sh players seem to like to start shit for no reason other than "Meleefags are the worst," when in reality no Meleefag had ever cared if anyone else decided to play Brawl or Sm4sh.

fountain of dreams has a pretty high ceiling actually... even in your picture you can see how far the blast zone is from the stage.. a much better example would have been stadium... it looks like it would be a big stage from the cameras perspective but if you zoom out a little the blast zone is very low, making it a prime fox stage. another would've been yoshis, although that doesn't demonstrate the point as clearly since the blast zones on all sides are close to that stage, including a higher floor so you die off the bottom before you normally would.

The interesting thing is that DI becomes second nature after a while, so people who attend tournaments who have "good DI" are not even thinking about it most of the time, they are just reacting. This requires watching your opponents character instead of yours, recognizing the move and which way it will send you and reacting appropriately, all without a thought. The best thing about it is that it has been a staple since melee so it carries over between games (well, survival DI anyways)

The upper blast zone on Fountain of Dreams is the same height as the upper blast zone on Dream Land so Fox's up smash actually kills later on both of those stages. Stages with low upper blast zones are Yoshi's Island, Pokemon Stadium, and Final destination. Battlefield has the most even horizontal and vertical blast zones which is why people in the competitive community commonly refer to it as the most neutral stage.

2:05 actually you can do Smooth Landing in Brawl, but only works for Down Aerials, and it completely negates all the landing lag. You do it by using the C-Stick of the GameCube controller to use the Down Aerial, while holding up with the analog stick. It is mostly know to be done with Ganondorf, which fans dubbed "Thunderstomping", that focus on spamming his infamous Down Aerial on short hops.

The fact that Smash can transcend the competitive/casual boundary alone is remarkable, even if the community is rather split. There aren't many fighting games that can do that.
