@DylanG0125 The only Smash game I've ever bought before this one was Smash Wii U. Thought it was good but only played it for about 20 hours or so and didn't get into it much but did appreciate certain things about it. This I've already played for about 45 hours almost exclusively single player, and I do have a desire to learn and get better. I'd say Smash Wii U didn't really turn me into a fan, and so I only bought Ultimate because I thought it looked kind of cool in the Directs, but now I think I'm a Smash fan thanks to Ultimate and I'm really glad I bought it. Everyone is different though, so really the only way to find out is to give it a shot.

To be fair about the old All Star mode, I felt that after getting all the dlc on Wii U it got too goddamn long. And this game has even more characters than that. I wouldn’t even think about beating that with over 70 characters.

It was a fun mode for the first few games, but now with them focusing on spirits, it just feels unnecessary. Also, expecting a return of the break the targets mode is ridiculous since the one in Brawl was a huge step down from the first two. It's clear that they became too time consuming for their own good to try to make a stage for every character.

@Yami yama When I found Donkey Kong's sub-zone it was a nice surprise. Same for the Street Fighter one. Sure I seen the plane in the Direct, but I had no idea I would be greeted to that song and going around that map in that order. It's not a huge deal since the game has been out, but those discoveries are the best WoL can offer. Not a knock on EZA, but viewers should take caution.

Excellent review Damiani, best in the biz. Online was definitely a sour note, but the rest of the package is brimming with so much content and just raw *fun* that I can't be as mad about that as I would if this were another game. However, I sure as hell am NOT paying for Nintendo's online until it's worth it, and Smash is really only fun with friends that are in the room in its current state. *Update:* I caved and I paid for online anyways :( Online is a little better with the patch but beyond 1 vs 1 which usually works fine, it's really still very problematic and laggy. 4 person free for all online is just slow motion smash bros, there's no way around it.

The recent patch really helped the online in terms of lag and matching you to the actual game mode you want. If cost bothers you, you can get a couple friends together and have a “family” (warning though, trust the “parent”, as they have control.) I think the online isn’t terrible now, and is worth the purchase.

I think the relative lack of a graphical jump was part of the reason why they felt the need to go so hard on content/fanservice and decent fighting mechanics changes, in order to make a clear impression that it wasn't just Smash 4.5 to the mainstream. Overall, Ultimate feels like the best Smash since 2001's Melee both in gameplay and boldness. Hope those 2 games have long, healthy lives for many more years. Just a shame we couldn't get 70+ new Break the Targets courses =/

I recently compiled each of the allies personal top 10 lists from 2017 and processed them through various voting systems. BOTW won GOTY in every system so no worries. But Hellblade, What Remains of Edith Finch, Steam World Dig 2, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which all ranked in the top 10 for this compiled list were snubbed nominations in last year's award's deliberations. What took those game's places were Hollow Knight, Horizon, Nier, and Wolfenstein 2. I write this to say that just like Hall of Greats, maybe the allies should adopt a more robust voting system for GOTYs. Plus back in stream Ian asked somebody to do this so there ya go.

I'm not sure about this but my experience with online is not so bad. I have matches that are very smooth and matches that can be laggy but it seems to be dependent on the connection of the other player because mine is very good. But this is an issue I always had with fighting games. I also play SFV on Ps4 online and it is the same there... It is possible though that on switch more people are on wifi or casual to where they don't have as good of a connection. Maybe that's why more people have these issues. Dedicated server though would not be the solution, that is for sure I guess.

I love you guys... but complaining about the difficulty after having seen you playing sticks out as rather funny to me. I'm by no means an expert but WoL on Normal is so easy if you equip the right spirits. Most fights are over in seconds.

Nintendo really needs to figure out their online infrastructure. This is the only game I’d buy a switch for but I’m definitely not paying for their online service if games like smash of all things have serious problems even if it’s only $20 a year. I'm on the side of wanting at least Break the Targets though. There is only one thing to do in this game and that's fight. I wish they had some of the platforming elements that Melee's adventure mode had or the Trophy coin shooter/ Stage Builder from Brawl. I still really enjoy this game though. I just find myself getting tired of it occasionally without something else to break it up.

Very fair assessment of the game. It is absolutely unacceptable that the game was released with multiplayer connection performance in it's current state. It's been over 10 years now since their first attempt with Brawl, and they still haven't seemed to learn their lesson at all. If I recall, even Mario Kart Wii had significantly better online performance than Brawl, and likely Ultimate. The market is there for them to tap into, I don't understand why they don't attempt to capitalize on it.

I really don't want to have to buy a network adapter, run another wire to my switch from across the house, and plug in just to *maybe* get a good connection. @@ninjacats200 From what I've been hearing a lot of games run fine these days without dedicated servers, I mean Splatoon 2 is P2P and it runs almost perfectly fine, I have played over 300 hours, and I can't remember any time when I've had latency issues, and disconnects only occur, at the worst, every 40 games. Splatoon 2, again, another Nintendo published Switch game using P2P with a far heavier online emphasis. This isn't an issue of P2P, its purely a code issue, they focused on making sure it was as good as possible in local multiplayer and in turn didn't come close to optimizing online enough, and in turn the online is really really bad. A lot of focus on recoding that and performance would be far better.

I´m NOT a fighting gamer and i bought it and enjoying it a LOT, the world of light might not be for those who play against others but for me that loves single player it´s great and loving every part of it AND a great trainer for someone like me who´s last time playing a smash brothers was in the gamecube and only once at the house of a friend, even tho i don´t like to play online ANY game this one motivates me to do so, the "issues" everyone is having has been nothing out of this world (at least not a whole point deducted from any score), I´ve seen worse in other fighting games on release (i do not play but I DO enjoy watching a good match)... but i guess a 9 is an excellent score, now to wait for joker to join the roster... and i´m betting sora will too :P

Set the controls to high sensitivity it helps a lot and every pro player plays with it.

It's not high sensitivity controls its high sensitivity stick, and all it does is make the dashes easier to start. It doesnt affect the buffer window or the input lag, it just ends up making it harder to do tilts.

For me I'm particularly let down and a big reason for that is the online mode. For me that was a major priority since most of my friends don't live in the same town, and the ones who are have schedules that rarely line up with each other to meet up, so we rely on online play a lot. Despite all our connections being rather solid, we're constantly running into freezing spikes or slowdown and input lag issues. I also 100% agree about World of Light, it was great at first but it just feels like its overstaying its welcome. I just beat Dharkon expecting him to be the final boss after already having one fakeout with Galeem. Only to discover NOPE: the game is STILL going.

A lot of people count on their judgement and base their decision to buy or skip the game on it. That's why I was hoping they'd put a bit of effort into it. Judging a fighting game without understanding the basic mechanics of the game is like judging the story of an RPG after playing only the first 5 minutes.

The online play is really bad. It is far too significant a blemish on a fighting game for it to even remotely be considered to have a perfect score. It is like having to listen to a Symphony through a cup and string.

No game with this shit of an online component in 2018 should get a 10 in fact I think a 9 is too generous. Nintendo can't even do 4 players online that's pathetic there are many games who do 20 vs 20 online. So much for a multi billion dollar corporation having technology.

It meant to be played in small bursts imo, i loved te boss fights tho. And the final showdown is cool as fuck. I really prefer this kind of single player than something in the lines of Subspace emissary, this engine just does not work with long platforming section that well.

I think world of light is awesome cause the challenges are sometimes hard,the bosses,the music,the map itself,and i know some people think its just event matches but still its really challenging and man that final freaking boss is AMAZING.

It's pretty hard to get online working in a fighting games.. Most use peer 2 peer networking so if your opponent has sub-optimal internet connection it'll also affect your connectivity. I wish smash can filter your opponents connection ala tekken 7 so you'll always get stable experience.

You always have to keep in mind who it is that's creating these reviews. They give games that get boring after a couple hours 10/10, but rate a game like this much lower, even though it will provide countless hours of awesome entertainment for years to come. If you watch their gameplay of Smash you can tell that most of the Allies don't know that blocking exists and none of them are able to space moves, dodge roll, air dodge, ledge guard etc. Bottom line: Don't go to a team that doesn't know that GRABBING exists to rate your fighting games.

@@Yeldibus This was reviewed by Damiani, so the fact that others don't know how to block is irrelevant. In fact, two of them don't really play Smash Bros and are trying to get into it for the first time with Ultimate. In general, the idea that a 9 isn't an amazing score (especially with paid yet awful online) is mind boggling. They love the hell out of Smash Bros.

Some aren't even worth booting up more than once and you feel like you just threw 60 bucks in the toilet. At the same time a ridiculous effort like Ultimate gets rated lower? it's just weird to me.

Also, as of now, they have only given THREE 10/10's and FIVE 5 Star scores out of 288 reviews.
