rex's removal was stated to be hardware limitations, not the mii costumes addition, since rendering 16 high poly models (8 player smash) on the switch in handheld mode at once would've melted it, so its just the ice climbers bullshit for Smash 4 3DS. As a big fan of the game I can absolutely agree that the absence of the driver-blade system that makes the games combat so special really stings, especially since I like rex's character and wouldn't have minded him being in the game, but having the game represented in any capacity is good enough for me.

Rex was supposed to be DLC despite being a Mii Costume. Sakurai stated it was originally going to be Rex & Pyra who would function in a similar way to the Ice Climbers. However, hardware limitations prevented this idea from happening. He then thought about making it Rex only, but went with Pyra & Mythra instead because he felt fans would prefer them.

Fun Fact: Steve was supposed to be the finale of fighter pass 1. He was delayed to he after both byleth & min min. This was shown in the games code as he is ordered before byleth and min min in terms of the codes slot #

One thing I want to bring up about the Monster Hunter is that the Monster Hunter team in Capcom have gone on to say they do not want to use the Hunters themselves to represent the franchise in crossover games as they feel the monsters are the true focus of the franchise. Fighters Pass 2 is seen as Sakurai's way of tying up loose ends of what characters or series was considered for Ultimate's base roster and the previous Smash game but couldn't add them due to time constraints. ARMS and XC2 were considered for a slot in the base roster during Ultimate's development, Steve was negotiated for Smash since at least 2015, FFVII had zero new content in Ultimate's base game, Tekken was originally going to have a character in Smash 4 in the form of Heihachi, and Sora was the most requested character from the Smash Ballot above the other ballot picks like Banjo, K. Rool, Ridley, Simon, Bayonetta, and the cut veterans. The only known characters/franchises left who were also considered for Smash but still haven't gotten in the roster yet are Ayumi Tachibana and a Rhythm Heaven character.

i know i'm over a year late, but fun fact about pyra/mythra. sakurai's original plan WAS to have the driver/blade mechanic in smash. the reason why it got scrapped was because the switch literally kept shitting the bed. like how ice climbers got cucked out of smash 4 because the 3ds couldn't handle it, a unique gameplay style for a xenoblade 2 rep got cucked because the potato hardware of the switch couldn't handle it.

Great video man. I was one of the 2 people who actually enjoyed your first video and felt that despite the negativity, you were really fair and made some good points even though I personally disagreed with some of them. This follow up vid pretty much sums up my exact thoughts on the general entitlement and ungratefulness a lot of people have toward this game, especially as a long time fan myself and it was pretty fuckin funny and cathartic to hear you rag on these types of people. I would actually think a different approach with a sequel could be to focus way more on building up representation for existing franchises. If the approach for the next Smash Bros. was to focus on really expanding on what's there, making it feel like each franchise was fully explored rather than just represented people might take cuts more easily. This also means that suddenly the character choosing process will also prioritize way more B-Listers as they serve a vital role in expanding a franchise's representation. I would not be surprised if this approach would go over well and you see Smash fans suddenly embracing cuts. Now every franchise gets to be closer to being Fire Emblem, now suddenly there is a need to shove in all these third party villains and side kicks that were like no priority anymore. Just a thought that came to mind watching your video.

I think the reason why a lot of people want Crash in Smash(including myself) is because Super Smash Bros at its core is a very cartoonish and slapstick driven game. Despite not being super close to Nintendo or Smash in terms of relevancy, he's a character that id argue would benefit from its gameplay the best out of any possible character they could add. There aren't as many "cartoony" characters in the game as there should be compared to the more humanoid characters that are more abundant and the ones that are there don't take advantage enough of the fact that smash is a stupid silly cartoon game. Smash has characters become dizzy and have their mouth on fire when they eat spicy food. The core gameplay of smash is launching characters off the screen, which is pretty silly in retrospect. The Crash series has a multitude of cartoon gags and animations that can be used to really push the essence of smash further beyond that only characters like Banjo and Bowser Jr were kind of able to get across. All of this can be applied to Rayman too but to a lesser extent. I agree that they wouldn't be perfect inclusions and Banjo definitely deserved to get in more, but there's a pretty solid argument to be made that they could add something significant to the game that not many characters in gaming really have the ability to accomplish. As dumb as it sounds, character animation and aesthetic is something that CAN make a game a lot more fun(especially for ones like smash), and for me personally not many characters in the game deliver on that front. Not even other slapstick platform fighters like Multiversus and Nickelodeon All Star Brawl really get into this, despite using ACTUAL CARTOON characters. Good vid tho, lot of good points made.

So the reason Min Min got in over Spring Man and Ribbon Girl (aside from nepotism from Yabuki) was because she won what was essentially a ranked popularity contest over the game's first couple years. About twice every month, two characters would be pit against one another, and you were given the choice between them to say which one you liked more, albeit the whole event was weighted slightly because most people were better at playing one character than another. Basically, if Smash had started development a year or two later than it did, then Spring Man would've probably been the one in the main slot despite Sakurai and Yabuki's personal wants. Oh, also - if you don't like playing ARMS right now, I can't stress this enough, just _go in_ whenever you start playing. Dash as much as possible and try to make it so that your opponent gets boxed in. The core appeal of the game (for me) is in the fight for a guaranteed advantage state, the feeling of dodging 90 punches over the span of ten seconds against a stronger opponent, or the feeling of being untouchable from the other side of the map during the last five seconds because I'm using gloves that hit from longer ranges. I can see how it's hard to get into - the differences between characters only start to come through when you're fighting against more difficult opponents since they're more likely to be dashing everywhere instead of just walking. If it were up to me, I'd give each character another character-specific ability, then I'd make the characters and punches just a little bit faster to force people to play to their characters' strengths, and it would be a 10/10 game for me.

It’s ok if y don’t like a character, but let’s not act like Edelgard isn’t a deep character. She is a very well written character and plenty of people often express why, and I rarely see people say that it’s about her looks. Also while there are a lot of people who dislike her for some of the things she did, there are even more people that likes her because of her writing. The only Edelgard that I can see being considered a bad character is Crimson Flower route. Also I remember alot of people wanting Edelgard in smash because she uses an axe and would be another antagonists/anti hero smash character. Don’t mislead these people

I was looking forward to when you inevitably made this video, and you delivered! Also as a Xenoblade fan, I really like Pyra & Mythra’s inclusion since I wanted an XC2 rep after finishing the game. That said, I love a lot of the third party additions as well. Banjo & Sephiroth are perfect, Steve getting in was amazing and Sora’s reveal trailer was truly magical! Even if some characters I wanted didn’t get in, it’s hard to be disappointed in the final product. Smash Ultimate is truly special, this will definitely go down in history as one of the biggest crossovers in gaming and it’s just so satisfying that it happened in the first place. I’m extremely glad Sakurai managed to give us this masterpiece and so much more.

Only stuff I have to says I'm still thinking Byleth was scrapped together with animations from monster hunter after the Monhunt team didn't want the player character in fighting games, and Min Min was pretty much the most likely ARMSer for smash as she is the only character with kicks/other types of attacks as well as the winner of a popularity poll (though I was hoping for Dr Cortex as a big slow floating powerhouse villain, Ganondorf with Sora air mobility). Other than that, the video is annudah ten outta ten, you put together all the words we all think, and you are genuinely my favourite youtube channel.

More companies should have their own lovingly-made cross-over fighters. I like NiGHTs more than most of the Smash roster, but I’m not biased enough to say he deserves a spot on the roster. SEGA, Capcom, etc. should have their own party-fighters; that way, you can have all the niche picks you want without being mad when Nintendo prioritizes their niche characters over other ones.

As an encyclopedic fan of Ace Attorney, I appreciate how popular Phoenix Wright was as a candidate for the Smash roster. He's a character from a goofy enough franchise to fit with the general vibe of Smash, and people loved that he was included in UMvC3. I did too. It was really fun watching players like Lythero consistently grief online players with one of the lowest-tiered characters in the game. But he was always my meme pick. I never seriously considered him simply because he's already been in UMvC3. First of all, the way they implemented him and Maya in that game is hilarious in both how out of place they feel and how bad they are in viability. Normally I don't care too much about the competitive meta of fighting games, but in this case, it's exactly by design that they're made to be gimmicky and fun and thus unreliable. Nick is always forced to rely on his signature gimmick that it becomes a crutch. Maya helps a bit, but she's locked to two moves, the shield and the unblockable, and Nick can only survive for so long. They're meant to be the "Dan" of the roster and it shows. If they actually added the duo into Smash, I have little doubt that most of that moveset would carry over to this game, with maybe some extra touches from Project X Zone 2. But ultimately, we would have ended up with yet ANOTHER DLC character with an absurdly unbalanced comeback mechanic. It might be a unique one, but integrating the evidence from UMvC3 would also feel a little too much like Steve's mining in this game. I was also afraid that such a playstyle would only make Nick feel "toxic" to play against, especially on Smash's notoriously bad online. I'm still a bit disappointed that no AA representation made it into Smash, not even as Assists or Spirits or a post-FP spirit battle event, but it's fine. It's still a relatively niche franchise of Capcom's, so it makes sense that Dante and the Monster Hunter would make it in as Mii costumes before Phoenix would. Besides, the main reason I got invested into Smash at all was because 64 was hectic fun back in the day and I loved all of the hype reveals (note: the hype reveals, not every one). I was stunned by Megaman and Little Mac's beautiful trailers, Palutena's had some amazing 2D animations, and I actually squealed at the Belmonts' reveals - a thing I rarely do. Cloud and Sephiroth have been my childhood for 24 years running too, so all else was just a nice bonus. What the hell, they didn't have to go that hard on Seph's trailer. They literally remade the climax to Advent Chlidren. I still rewatch it to this day. People say Sora's trailer was more hype? Nah. It was ceremonial for sure, but it barely showed who Sora was and focused more on the fact that he got to shake hands with Chris Pratt. Sephiroth just went around killing everyone and that's all we need from him. But above all, between him and Kazuya, we practically already have Edgeworth and Phoenix in Smash. GG.

Honestly, Super Smash Bros would've been better if the franchise kept being only Nintendo Characters. The true identity of the series was that it's a celebration of the history of Nintendo and shoving in too many Third party characters makes it overkill and now it feels like M.U.G.E.N. rather then the actual Nintendo franchise about Nintendo All-Stars since the beginning.

Having Sora in Smash will never translate into adding in Mickey Mouse, because Mickey Mouse doesn't belong to the Kingdom Hearts franchise. The reason Mickey shows up in KH it's because KH is a crossover game just like Smash. Like, let's say someone got the rights to make a Smash game, that person would only be able to use Smash's original assets, unless they go and get the rights to every franchise individually. So again, Mickey is part of the Mickey Mouse franchise, not Kingdom Hearts, which means that is perfectly fine to see Kingdom Hearts as a Videogame franchise, rather than a movie tie-in.

The problem will probably never be lack of Disney characters in KH, and for a while now they’ve inserted increasingly less FF characters in KH which was the draw to the series in the first place. It feels like false advertisement. Please do not get me wrong, I do not want Disney gone in KH because that ruins the appeal too; I want FF and other Square IPs (not referring to original KH characters) to flourish in the story like Disney does. So much wasted potential and it’s ridiculous because KH is so easy to do; literally a crossover fanfic by bigwig devs from prominent companies.

Overall Fighters Pass 1 is more consistent with the quality of the characters. You got your unexpected picks with Joker and Terry The fan-favourites with Hero and Banjo And the Nintendoforciblymarketed character in Byleth Fighters Pass 2 on the other hand? Like to get straight to the point the Nintendo characters - Min Min and Pyra/Mythra - are the problem in all of this. Them being "Nintendo" characters is irrelevant to why they suck. The video perfectly explains the problem so I want talk too much about it, but in short: They are total table scraps. They absolutely would not have been picked, but do to circumstances... Sephiroth and Sora are awesome inclusions. Definitely the fan-favorites in the lineup. Steve and Kazuya popped off for no reason. They have brilliant movesets that showcase the respective series' mechanics seamlessly. I'm not attached to a specific series in the DLC TOO much, (and the ones I am a fan of met their demise in the most despicable way possible [Devil May Cry and Shantae]), but they serve their purpose well in showcasing what the games are all about so you might be interested in buying them and most importantly they are fun characters to play as. BESIDES THOSE TWO. In conclusion Simon and Richter are already in the game since launch so none of this matters that much to me!
