I bought a basic 2013 ST. Put about 7,000 miles on it and the only complaint I had was cramps in my right hand for the lack of a cruise control. Upgraded to a 2015, ES. Have now put about 30,000 miles on it. I used to believe Honda was a Japanese word for "Bullet proof". Now believe that Yamaha means, "More reliable than Honda". Great machine. I ride 700 miles per day at age 70. Used to ride a Gold Wing but this is every bit the bike with much wider range of function.

I just rode mine across Canada and back; what a machine. The bike does not feel any heavier than a Gs1200 or any other adv bike - the bike feels and performs way better than 'the paper puts it'. My butt dyno says is Fast and Stable. I ride it off-road in places my Dr650 shouldn't be and I make it home safe and sound. This bike isn't for everyone, it takes a big personality to ride it!

Great Review! I bought a used S10 Gen 1 instead of the new Gen 2. It was a mistake that has cost me some grief in upgrading. But I do love the bike, and it's low end grunt. The traction control is what sold me on this bike. I never turn it or ABS off. The disadvantages, for me, do not out weigh the advantages. The handle bars and foot pegs are poor. I've had to replace both to comfortably stand on it. I don't understand riders who buy these and immediately want to place a "beak" on the front. I would understand moving the front fender up, which makes far more sense. I've been on this bike for 8 years and it has been a great experience, for the most part. I am 67 and expect someday soon to shift to a trike or at least a Gold Wing, my dirt riding days being over.

An excellent review! Well done. Just posted this same comment below on a different S10 review. Looking for as much input as I can find. Just read through the majority of the comments here from other S10 owners and the word RELIABLE/BULLETPROOF/Carefree are very frequent. While planning a huge Canadian trip this summer through QC/NL/NS from Maryland, I looked for this kind of mile-crushing, comfortable and BULLETPROOF machine to get me safely there and back. Having seen similar comments for months, I found a 2013 with 10k miles from a dealer I trust completely and started my learning curve on a new bike. Comfort, mileage, handling, quirks, etc. Have ridden less than 500 miles on only a few weekends and got stranded with a shot clutch. Apparently the whole clutch pack is done. Lost a month of riding and cost another $1000. Crushingly disappointed as my trip is now cancelled and I'm not sure I can now travel far from home without a constant anxiety of WTF else is going to go tits up.... which is the exact opposite of what everyone says and the riding I want to do. Any comments on whether this is a fluke or if I got the only lemon in the basket of apples?
@Freedomachine Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video. Unfortunately at 10k miles you got 100% a lemon. While on the gen 1 the clutch can be noisy I never heard of one going bad at that milage. I'm really sorry.

Hi I bought my Super Ten three years ago for the specific purpose of long distance touring I am over 6 foot tall and find a lot of motorbikes physically too small and most are uncomfortable I like your review it's very honest and truthful. I do however disagree with your fuel consumption figures. Fully loaded on my regular trips from Spain back to the UK I get an average of anywhere between 5.1 and 5.6 litres per 100km, unloaded and taking it very easy I have achieved 4.6 which I thought was a mistake but it's not uncommon according to some of the forums that I am a member of. I have had nearly 400km out of the tank before filling up on more than one occasion, the bike is standard apart from a set of risers and a taller screen. Love the bike will never sell it.
@Freedomachine2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching ☺️ I did get 4.8l/km fully loaded on the motorway as well. These are declared figures and since it all boils down to riding stile I did not comment on it. If you check previous comments you will see that some will think the exact opposite of what you just wrote.

Excellent review and history of the Super Tenere! You did a great job of covering everything! I've owned a 2012 and now own a 2015. I recently bought a KTM 1190 Adventure R. I've ridden MANY different adventure bikes. I can tell you that other brands lie about their specs. My brother has a GS 1200. My Super Tenere has more power despite claims. My brother agrees. It is noticeable. Definitely more power than the Africa Twin. Yes, my KTM 1190 has more power. But not (that) much. The KTM is not that much lighter when you factor changing the exhaust on the Super Tenere can reduce about 12lbs. of weight. The Super Tenere has a metal gas tank whereas other brands use a plastic gas tank. I am probably selling my Super Tenere and keeping my KTM, but it is NOT an easy decision. Nothing wrong with the Tenere, just want a new experience after having ridden my Tenere's for a long time and many miles. Only annoying thing is when holding in the clutch, the gear shift indicator on the dashboard stops displaying what gear you are in. Wish there were a mod that would fix this.

Thanks for watching and the extensive feedback ☺️ Always nice to hear about the experience of other people. The KTM is an outstanding machine.

Great video and a very good review of the S10. I had a Gen 1 (new in 2016!) and it was a really great bike. Much better once flashed (much smoother throttle response) and I put a full Arrow system on it. That really improved the mid range performance. I would definitely buy one again, but they aren't that common here in Ireland where the GS seems to be pretty ubiquitous. Pity Yamaha decided not to upgrade the engine to meet Euro 5.

Hi. Would love to know about the Flash. It’s a bit twitchy isn’t it ? Any details would be appreciated. Thanks.
@tokaitelejohn56562 жыл бұрын
@@TheVolumeSociety I got it done at Mototuning.ie in Dublin. Gary Donoghue (top man!) had a couple of goes on it. With the first (standard) flash which removed the gear restrictions, the performance increase was immediately noticeable - like day and night really. But, the throttle was still a bit on and off. He wasn't happy with it and he took the bike back in and custom flashed it and it really helped the twitchy throttle at low speeds. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
@Freedomachine2 жыл бұрын
Depends where you live but for instance in Ireland Mototuning is good. If taking your bike to a specialized place doesn't work then you can buy modified ECUs from websites such as this one www.off-the-road.de/en/xt-1200z/ecu-restriction-removal/1052/ecu-remapping-yamaha-xt-1200z-super-tenere?c=170 I did not buy from here. Depends on type of off-road and your ability to ride off-road. For sure it is equally capable as any other ADV bike in this category and the limitation will be the rider. My point of view for large ADV bikes is that these are designed to take you on a long journey that is mostly paved and then it allows you to do some off-road to find a nice camp spot. I am not expecting this to be a motocross bike.

Hello to the motorbike community. I have a question for anyone with the knowledge and experience. I am contemplating buying a brand new ADV this spring. I basically have it narrowed it down to 2 options. Option A) 2023 Honda Africa Twin Super Adventure Manual. Like the style and look, I am concerned about the continual maintenance on the chain. It is not uncommon for me to jump on my current bike and put ~500 km's on it in a day on the weekend (311 miles). I am also concerned about the comfort, both in the seat and wind protection. I read lots of information and people love them and of course people will gripe as well and for good reason, experience on the bike. Everyone is different. Is this bike going to be comfortable enough for a few very long days in the saddle from time to time? Although we all get off our bikes every 2-3 hours to fuel on a long trip, still good to have really good comfort when needed. Is this bike the one to have if a person gets an upholsterer to redo the seat to your butt contours? Will that make it an awesome long haul machine? Option B) 2023 Yamaha Super Tenene 1200. I understand this bike is boring (perhaps compared to some of the competition) but with that come great all day comfort in the saddle and super easy maintenance and reliability. Maybe not as much fun as some of the competition, but my current bike also has shaft drive and has had zero issues in 13 years of ownership. So maybe I don't want to give up reliability and low maintenance? This bike that I buy will be a long long time purchase and possibly my last bike (maybe not), but as we get older we look for more comfort. The riding I will do is 80% on the pavement and 20% gravel and fire roads. HOWEVER, I live an hour away from the mountains and perhaps with an ADV, that ratio will switch to 60% highway, 40% gravel/fire roads..........we'll see, the ADV could open a whole new chapter in my riding. The Honda would be a no brainer, but does the Yamaha do the same job with a little less fun factor? Would love feedback from people that have/had either or both bikes and let me know based on your experience and knowledge. Thank you!
@Freedomachine Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for writing here. Unfortunately my channel is still not at that popular and you won't get a lot of feedback. I suggest that you write on a dedicated Facebook page or forum. Remember that a bike is fun as much as the owner wants it to be. The africa tween is not going to be like night and day compared to the super tenere. Once you remap the ECU it will be hard to tell the difference in terms of power. Regarding comfort, it is totally subjective but the ST looks more like a long distance machine.

I think the situation Super Tenere owners face, with Yamaha not wanting to sell them any more, is a little like owning a motorcycle such as the 2000 model BMW R1150GS. Only finding just a few years later the model replacing it, is completely different. So long as someone is willing to continue servicing your bike, it probably doesn't matter if the model is never made again. What is in a name anyway? It is the bike that counts. My BMW mechanic told me that the engine in my 2000 model GS was the best of all the GS engines up to the liquid cooled one. I still have it, but am looking to get something else now.....perhaps a tenure.

In just over two years, I have put 42k miles on a 2019 I purchased new in 2020. It has performed well, with only one rear drive seal replacement, and regular maintenance. Glad I got one before it was discontinued. GS are too expensive for every facet of owning one, KTM dealers are too far apart, and the Honda doesn't suit me.

@@Freedomachine I see. So when 110 is quoted that is not comparable to say a BMW GS that quotes closer to 130-150? I believe their numbers are at the wheel? So the at wheel HP is quite a bit lower than other similar HP at wheel? BMW GS, Africa twin, KTM 1190

All manufacturers give you hp at the crankshaft. The latest GS has more like 117hp at the wheel. It depends a lot on the drivetrain. For instance a chain is better in terms of losses.

Has anyone put knobby off-road tyres on theirs??
@Freedomachine2 жыл бұрын
A lot do that but you really need to have a good reason for it. Being it the need of doing a lot of off-road. If you ride it on the road it will just spoil your ride. Thanks for watching ☺️

I have mitas E07+ and they offer exceptional grip. I don’t do much off roads but lots of country lanes in rural areas wher farm vehicles dominate. You never know what sort of road surface you get. The mitas give confidence for all conditions.

The reason it's discontinued is due to the european emission norms. It's still sold in the US.

Thanks for watching ☺️ yes that is right but last thing I heard is that they will pull it off the US market by the end of this year.
