This was my favourite game on the Sega Master System (imo the definitive version - more responsive), and one of the few games I've completed on multiple occasions. When that "Oh!" appeared, that was to indicate that there was a hidden door in the wall. Always jump around as you're going along as there are coins and bags of coins all over the place. You'll need them if you want to steadily upgrade you equipment (shields, armour and boots) as you progress.

@gearsofgames Jumping around almost everywhere is recommended e.g. when on clouds, trees, even in-between buildings. That's one of the reasons why you didn't have enough money to buy all the best equipment in the shops. There's other secrets and things that need doing as well, but I won't spoil things for you by revealing them.

The arcade was an absolute hit in my town, we learned the tricks and secrets by watching other players... later we got the excellent Master System conversion, but the ST version is quite good also.

I used to play this alot on our ST but never finished it. Can't recall if I got stuck or if I grew tired before reaching the end. From what I remember the game did outstay its welcome a bit, being a bit longer than it needed to be. Been years though! The sequel, The Dragon's Trap, is a terrific game, still alot of fun today. Also, when those "Oh?" messages pop-up, it means there's secret door you can knock on 🙂

And there seems to be no way to save you progress? Some passwords would have been great! Not played the The Dragon's Trap, only think I played the SMS of Monster Land in the series. Ah, so that's what "Oh?" means, thank you! 😁

7:08: You missed a secret door in that "Oh?" message... First time watching this Atari ST version Wonder Boy in Monster Land. Pretty solid port indeed. Here in Brazil, the Sega Master System had a famous (authorized) hack version made by Tec Toy having character Mônica (from the comic book Turma da Mônica, "Mônica's Gang" in Portuguese) in place of Wonder Boy. It was called "Mônica no Castelo do Dragão". It was the very time Tec Toy had an involvement in game making creation. Curiously, the villain Capitão Feio appears in the title screen, but not in the game itself.

Yeah, had no idea about the "Oh" message, everyone keeps commenting about it. 😁 So that was actually a licensed versions then, interesting!

My best friend used to play this a lot on the Arcades and I used to watch him since he completed it with just one coin so I learned all the secrets. When it was patched for the falcon I played it a lot. I don't remember if I've finished another ST game, but I did complete this. It's a very good conversion, even though some of the tricks to get more money don't work so you can't upgrade your gear as much. I would have liked it if the scrolling and frame rate were a bit better but once you are in the game you don't notice it that much.

I think it’s a good conversion, but for ST I prefer some Wonderboy clones like Kid Gloves 2 and Viking Child. You made another excellent video with that one, great. There’s also a new game in progress for ST, the amazing Miracle Boy in Dragon Land, which transports the Wonderboy experience to another level, do you know this game?

@gearsofgames there's a playable demo, very interesting. If I remember well, Samuel said he was planning to release the full game soon, in 2024 or beggining 2025, I can't wait for it!

See, I differ here, never understood why Imagitec Design released Viking Child on the ST, when it already had this, the Lynx, yes, it badly needed it. I appreciate it was annouced as part of a Trilogy, no further games ever appeared, but it just felt like an odd release.

@thefurthestmanfromhome1148 I think Viking Child is very enjoyable, not great but it deserves to be played sometime, not necessary in the ST catalogue but not too bad... I supose that it didn't succeed as they planned, so the trilogy was cancelled, I read something in some magazine back in the day. Anway we have Kid Gloves 2, this is my favourite Wonderboy clone until Miracle Boy is released.

Stupid intro screen aside, it is a good port which respects original the original and the home computer gamers. Like others have already noted, the arcade was very very popular for a while. In facts at the time Wonderboy was the character I mostly associated with SEGA.

I was totally in to cutsie games back in the day. Loved Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands! And the weirder they got, the better! 😁

I don't know what those magazines are on about, the game is pretty innovative and original taking rpg elements and putting them in a platformer and yet these same types of mags give Turrican 90%. The graphics are what you expect of the ST but it could use a lot better colours. You have to think strategically in what weapons you get or if you if want to save money for the better ones so a lot more advanced than stuff like Giana sisters.

Magazines back in the 16-bit days always seemed to expect that every game was supposed to be revolutionary and constantly break new ground! But often we were happy with a game that actually had some love put into it and had solid game play!

Loved every single game including the word "Wonderboy"... they are all fantastic.. as concerns this one, it is great on the ST, however, the problem is that the game is too long without offering a "save state" or a "enter code system".. that was a mistake.. by the way, another new Wonderboy-clone is coming for the ST and it looks marvelous... it is called "Miracle Boy".. check this out

I was wondering if there was some sort of save/password system, a huge bummer they left that out! Another commenter also mentioned Miracle Boy, so I have had a peek. Looks awesome! Will have to try it out!

Love the Wonder Boy series I remember playing Wonder Boy 1 on Master System here in Australia it was a good arcade port and then later on getting Wonder Boy in Monster Land loved it too but I never did get to finished it but my cousin did and then finally Wonder 3 Dragons Trap is the best great game and music 👍 enjoyed ur video

What's this now? Two great games in a row? What is happening to this channel, i'm used to seeing you suffer playing crappy games 😂 Just as yesterday, this one is on of my favourite games of all time, Wonder boy series doesn't get enough love imho.
