I find all these subsystem explanatory videos highly inteesting! Thanks for putting them out there. Ca 1:10 in the video: I don't know the correct english term but the "flange" around the opening to the cubby hole (containing the nozzle and hose) that the hatch rests on seems to be in dire need of a rust scrub/fixup and repaint before it pulverises completely and you fall through the hatch when stepping on it... 😉
@garyc5483

Flange is good enough Per. It surprises me that that area has not been cleaned and repainted during their 8 month refit. The hatch flange is reinforced so it would need a huge amount of corrosion before it failed. regards

Need to practice your bowling to unroll those hoses🤗. Polishing the brass fitting will do no good due to the salt in the atmosphere. May want to try never-seize on those threads, helps with keeping dirt ect off the threads and getting the connections off and on. Also in that environment some Lubricant on the O rings will help to keep them from drying out......best wishes with getting out on the water

Tristan, thank you for all the great videos. Question: Why aren't the fire hoses more easily accessible? What i'm referring to is what I see in hotels or public buildings. They are still in a recessed cabinet, but they are fully assembled. Just turn on the valve and run with the hose. I see you and Slav spending some time assembling the hose and nozzle. I understand it may be aesthetics, but time is precious when there is a fire.

Very good thing to practice and test. I figured the pressure would be much higher and they would have much more volume on a ship of this size. We can run more lines with a greater volume output with our “Smallest Fire Truck” than what they are outputting there. Are y’all required to be able to pull the hose, connect the nozzle and get water flowing in under a certain amount time?

@RichardAmmo1

Nick Greed I was thinking the same thing! It takes almost 5 minutes getting the whole thing together before you can turn the water on! I think it is simply because they want to make sure there is no water left in either part; especially if they don’t get all the salt water out. Water will cause mold, mildew and rot; and any salt in the water would start corroding and forming a hard crusty white crystals that might seize up or block the nozzle. Just my guess.

Captain, have you ever seen how fast fire spreads? In the 3 minutes or more it took you to dig those hoses out, unroll them, screw them together, and turn on the water may mean the difference in saving or losing the boat, and lives. That bow hose looks more like equipment to wash the decks and anchor with than put out a fire. Do yachts of that size not come equipped with sprinkler systems?
@JCrook1028
@JCrook1028 4 жыл бұрын
The sad thing is that he actually does know haw fast a boat fire spreads. He was Captain of another boat for the same owner that burnt to the waterline. That fire system to me seems very very weak. Takes way too long to get to, attach nozzle, attach hose then still have a fairly weak water stream. Yea it fills the insurance needs but it isn't gonna save the boat. If I were the owner watching this? I'd be very concerned about my investment.

It strikes me as odd: fire is an emergency where seconds are extremely important but important time is lost when a fire fighter must open a hatch to pull out a hose and then attach a nozzle and then attach the hose to a water source and then turn on the water supply and finally fight the fire. I keep water hoses attached at the front and rear of my house. My kitchen fire extinguisher is at the entrance to my kitchen. My vehicles each have at least one extinguisher. My fire fighting theory is: 1. Small fires are much easier to extinguish than large fires, 2. Fires don't wait so I act quickly. I have put out a house fire, a vehicle fire, and a printing business fire because I acted quickly and was prepared. The Boy Scout Motto: Be Prepared.

@izakjanneke2653
@izakjanneke2653 4 жыл бұрын
@@RichardAmmo1 the couplings they are using is the American standard screw type. Most of Europe use the Instantaneous Couplings. The instantaneous coupling's seal is prone to harden and leak more than the screw type. Both have pro's and cons. If it was me and if possible I would connect the nozzle with the hose and in the event of a fire its just a matter of connecting the hose with the hydrant valve.

Interesting video - always great to see the team working together and interesting to see the hoses in action. Quick question: how likely are you to ever use the fire hydrants in case of an emergency? I’ve seen a boat on fire and it was terrifying. It takes a few minutes to set the hoses up - if AWOL was on fire, wouldn’t you be more likely to be prioritising safety of everyone on board and probably abandoning ship rather than faff around with the hoses?

Hi Captain Tristan, how do you dry the hose before donut roll it and store it? If the hose inside doesn't dry out completely it will form mould and starts to rot. Also as so many questions before me why not store the hose with the nozzle connected to safe time, under emergency situation one will struggle to get the nozzle connected with the hose. I would also like to ask why you use the screw-in type of couplings and not the instantaneous couplings or the Storz couplings? Is it the shipping industry standards or yacht builders standards? Keep up the great work, love the vlogs

I was waiting to see the emergency generator start - short changed :( Obviously e-gen can run fire pumps and (all?) lights, anything else (not aircon of course but maybe ventilation?). Also why not run the e-gen for power while she was in the travel lift and before and during launch checks? Better than working in the dark like they did.

Great video as always....Keeps all the kinks out of the fire hoses for better flow. To be honest with you, you should be looking at a better fire pump. The pressure on that pump isn't even enough to get the first kink out at the "hydrant" (as you call it) on the bow of the boat. Those hose/ nozzles are made for better water flow. The stream on those hoses are about useless in a fire on board a boat. The lack of pressure will also allow the hoses to kink when being pulled around and you can lose all or most of the water flow. I would look at the specs on the fire pump and see if your getting the proper flow, it sure doesn't look like it. A fire on a large vessel like that will overcome those hoses in minutes. PS; don't worry about a little dripping at the nozzle, hoses will always leak when hand tight. Get a spanner wrench at each connection, just in case someone tightens the caps and you cant get them off by hand.....Stay safe and keep up the great videos....

Couple of points: Those area’s under those hatches and areas not normally seen, need to be in pristine condition, get the deck crew to start chipping and painting Those area’s are for saving the vessel under hazardous conditions. Nozzles on those fire hoses, need standard navy nozzles, be able to fog a person fighting the fire and fogging brings the temperature down and removes oxygen, remove 2 elements in a fire and it goes out. Shooting water 30 meters with those nozzles isn’t going todo diddley. The valves for those hoses should be 1/4 turn valves not what you have. Do you run fire drills weekly? Man overboard? Does every crew member know where all of the emergency equipment is, it could save your life. When you are chartering with guests, you are the crew and service personnel, when an emergency happens underway then you are the crew to keep the passengers safe and save the vessel. A lot of responsibility. If I was in your position as Captain I would greet the guests, and then schedule a mandatory meeting for emergency’s procedures and then a let’s have dinner. I don’t care who you are or how much money you have, when you are on a vessel respect the Captain and seek his cooperation while you enjoy your cruise.

From my vantage point here on the other side of my computer screen the Pressure and GPM really didn't seem nearly enough to sincerely fight a real fire, it did not look as though it was any effort at all to hold the hose, ie, low pressure and or volume. I hope i,m incorrect in thinking that there is not enough pressure and or volume of water to break through a window on that absolutely beautiful yacht and last I didn't see a variable nozzle so that one could protect yourself and others from heat and flames with a heavy cone of spray. Is this system more for insurance satisfaction ? The hose's would be good as an aide to abandoning ship in the case of a fire.. Tristan I hope you will take some of this as tongue-in-cheek as we very much enjoy your vlog's and never miss one, but I am curious.....

How likely would someone from a LPG tanker background get a job on a MY. How would it compare from an engineers point of view?
